Hot strip rolling production is a high-speed process which requires high-speed control and communication system, but because of the long distance between the delivery stand of the finishing mill and the gauge meter, dead time occurs when strip is transported from the site of the actuator to another location where the gauge meter takes its reading, which seriously affects the thickness control effect. According to the process model which is developed based on the measured data, a filtered Smith predictor is applied to predict the thickness deviation of the finishing mill. At the same time, an expert PI controller based on feature information is proposed for the strip thinning during looper rising and coiler biting period and the strip thickening during the tension loss period of the strip tail end. As a result, the thickness accuracy has been improved by about 1.06% at a steady rolling speed and about 1.23% in acceleration and deceleration.

The hot strip rolling of advanced microalloyed high strength steels still represents a new task to many mills due to the lack of data on the hot deformation resistance. With the aid of processing data from the Ispat-Inland hot strip mill, the “measured mean flow stresses” are calculated from the mill force using the Sims analysis and taking into account roll flattening, slip ratio and the redundant strain. A modification of the Misaka mean flow stress equation is proposed for C – Mn – Si – Al steels microalloyed with up to 0.02 % Nb. The effects of alloying and microalloying are then estimated. A new fitting parameter shows excellent agreement with the mean flow stress data from industrial processing of advanced high strength microalloyed steels. However, during the second half of the rolling schedule (lower temperature region), indications of austeniteto- ferrite transformation were found.

This paper has researched strip width model in hot strip rolling. Analyzed physical phenomena influencing strip width, established calculation model in production including width spread during flat rolling, width change induced by bending, width changed by high temperature creep and thermal expansion and contraction during rolling. Practical applications in domestic 1500 hot strip mill show that the width model achieved good effect and enhanced the calculation precision.

Fast and accurate positioning of Inlet Guide Vane (IGV) is critical for flow regulation in centrifugal air compressors, especially for surge avoidance control. Both transport delay and external disturbance are present for IGV position control on a compressed air system. A Smith Predictor based control scheme with the process-model modification is applied to this problem. The adopted control scheme can both compensate for the time delay and effectively reject step disturbances present in the IGV system. Simulation was conducted using simple PI controller and a PI controller with the Smith Predictor with process-model modification. It showed that the proposed control scheme can achieve zero steady-state error with the presence of external disturbance and the settling time was shortened. Robust stability and performance of the system was discussed.
