Introduction. Semen analysis is considered as the surrogate marker for male fecundity while assessing infertile men. There are several reasons for altered semen quality and bacteriospermia could be one among them. Thereby the aim of our work is to study the semen culture and its impact on semen parameters among infertile men.Materials and Methods. Semen samples were collected from men attending infertility clinic. Semen parameters were analysed based on WHO guidelines. Also, samples were subjected to culture using standard bacteriological techniques.Results. A total of 85 samples were collected. A number of 47 (55.30%) had normal sperm count, 37 (43.50%) had oligozoospermia, and one (1.17%) had azoospermia. Teratozoospermia was the most common abnormality observed (81.17%) followed by asthenozoospermia (28.23%). The prevalence of bacteriospermia was 35.3%.Enterococcus faecalis(30%) was the most common organism isolated followed by Coagulase negativeStaphylococcus(23.33%),Staphylococcus aureus(20%), andE. coli(10%). Other less frequently isolated organisms wereKlebsiella pneumoniae(6.66%),Proteussp. (6.66%), andCitrobactersp. (3.33%).Conclusion. The presence of asymptomatic bacteriospermia did not correlate with abnormal semen parameters.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to provide information on the semen quality pattern of infertile men and age thresholds for semen parameters in China. Methods This was a retrospective cross-sectional study investigating 71,623 infertile men from the Reproductive and Genetic Hospital of CITIC Xiangya in Hunan, China, from 2011 to 2017. The Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Kendall test, linear regression model and joinpoint regression were used. Results Although erratic changes were observed in the median semen parameters (sperm concentration 40.1–52.1 × 106/ml, total sperm count 117.8–153.1 × 106, sperm progressive motility 33.4–38.1%) during the 7 years of observation, no significant decrease in semen quality was found, and 47.88% of infertile men showed normal semen parameters according to the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. According to the joinpoint regression analysis, sperm progressive motility appeared to decrease earlier than the sperm concentration and total sperm count (at 28, 58, and 42 years of age, respectively). Conclusions There is no evidence of a deterioration in semen quality among infertile men in Hunan, China. Semen parameters decreased with increasing age, with turning points noted at different ages. Semen parameters are not absolute evidence for the assessment of male fertility potential. Therefore, we believe that, among semen parameters, the sperm concentration is the best predictor of fertility for ART, followed by motility. Decreased sperm motility may affect natural pregnancy, but it is not necessary for successful IVF.

Objective: To study the patterns and distribution of various abnormal semen parameters in infertile males. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Pathology, Combined Military Hospital, Karachi, from Nov 2019 to Oct 2020. Methodology: The study included 364 patients who presented with primary and secondary infertility. Consecutive convenient sampling was done. Semen analysis was performed using World Health Organization latest guidelines. Samples were categorized as normospermia, azoospermia, oligospermia, asthenozoospermia and necrospermia. Results: The study comprised of 364 samples of infertile males. Normal sperm count was observed in 317 (87%) males, azoospermia in 28 (7.6%) and oligospermia in 19 (5.2%) males. Low ejaculated volume and higher non-motile sperms were noted in oligospermia samples in comparison with normospermia samples. Asthenozoospermia was observed in 102 (28%) and oligoasthenospermia was noted in 15 (4.1%) samples. Conclusion: Good quality semen analysis is a corner stone to diagnose the cause of male infertility.Sperm concentration and motility are the important markers of normal male reproductive system and are related to each other.

Lay summary Firefighters are occupationally exposed to heat intensities and chemical concentrations that may affect fertility. Twenty firefighters participated in an exploratory study assessing fertility of firefighters via an online survey and semen analysis. Data analysis included consideration of demographic characteristics, reproductive history and occupational exposures. Overall, firefighter semen parameters were below World Health Organisation reference values designating fertility in men. Firefighters younger than 45 years had a higher incidence of abnormal semen parameters (42%) than those aged 45 years or greater (9%). Increased rank and higher levels of occupational and/or personal hygiene were associated with improved semen quality. Increased frequency of fire exposure was associated with a reduction in normal forms, volume, sperm concentration and total sperm count. Sperm clumping was greater than 10% in 26% of samples, suggesting reduced semen quality. This exploratory study provides novel data that support the hypothesis of an association between semen quality and firefighter’s occupational exposure to toxic environments.

Introduction: We aimed to determine the time and predictive factors of semen quality improvement in men with severe oligospermia after microsurgical varicocelectomy. Methods: Men with total motile sperm count (TMSC) <5 million on two semen analyses were identified from May 2015 to August 2017. Postoperative semen analysis was collected at 3–6 months and >6 months. We evaluated preoperative factors for successful semen quality upgrading based on assisted reproductive technology (ART) eligibility: in vitro fertilization [IVF] (<5 million), intrauterine insemination (IUI) (5–9 million), and natural pregnancy (>9 million). We compared men with TMSC <5 million to those with TMSC 5–9 million. Data are reported as means and standard error of the mean (SEM). Pregnancy data was collected by phone interview at >6 months postoperatively. Results: A total of 33 men were included. TMSC improved from 1.5±0.2 to 7.3±1.8 million at 3–6 months (p<0.05) and 12.2±3.6 million at >6 months (p<0.05). There was no statistical difference in TMSC between 3–6 months and >6 months. Sixteen (48.5%) men upgraded semen quality into the range of natural pregnancy. Preoperative TMSC from 2–5 million was predictive of upgrading semen quality. Twenty-four couples were contacted by phone; 20 were attempting pregnancy in the postoperative period and five (25%) of them had achieved natural pregnancy. Conclusions: Men with TMSC <5 million can expect the largest improvement in TMSC from 3–6 months postoperatively with minimal improvement thereafter. Preoperative TMSC >2 million was most predictive of semen quality upgrading.

With expanding knowledge on the health benefits of exercise, there is an increasing demand for information on the andrological consequences of participating in sports. These consequences are especially important in the context of infertility problems worldwide. The so-called “male factor” is reported in up to 50% of couples having trouble with conception. The answer to the question, “Is physical activity good for male reproductive health?” is not straightforward. A number of studies have suggested that significant changes in semen parameters may occur due to sports training of certain types, intensities, and durations. The changes to these parameters vary in scope, direction, and magnitude. Findings in recreational athletes have also differed from those in professional athletes. This review of the current literature suggests that intense physical activity may affect the semen concentration, as well as the number of motile and morphologically normal spermatozoa. Training at higher intensities and with increased loads seems to be associated with more profound changes in semen quality. In recreational athletes, exercise has either a positive or neutral effect on semen parameters. Due to many limitations (e.g., global sperm count trends, concerns about the quality control of sperm evaluations, and new standards for semen analysis), comparisons among historical data and their interpretation are difficult.

<p><strong>Background:</strong> The Infertility wing dept. of gyne &amp; obst at BSMMU provides services to the infertile couples who are referred from primary care levels and who cannot afford the expensive private facilities. The semen analysis is performed for the male partners of infertile couples at the Andrology Lab of BSMMU for detecting male factor abnormalities. <strong>Objectives:</strong> The objective of the study is to find out the pattern of semen parameters in our population and to find out the frequency and type of abnormal semen parameters. <strong>Methods:</strong> This is a retrospective descriptive study of the semen analysis performed at the Andrology Lab of BSMMU during the year 2011. A total of 200 consecutive samples were analysed. The procedure and reference values were according to the WHO guidelines 1999. <strong>Results:</strong> Semen parameters were abnormal in 38.5% of semen analysis. Severe male factor abnormality (azospermia and severe oligospermia combined) was in 28%. Sperm concentration had the highest variability followed by motility and morphology respectively in the n01moozospermic males. <strong>Conclusion:</strong> Severe oligospennia and azospermia are the most common abnormali­ties among the infertile men presenting at the Infertility unit ofBSMMU. It is recommended that the service at the Infertility wing of BSMMU should be more focused on these male factor abnormalities.</p>

Introduction: Body mass index BMI is a risk factor that influences semen quality and reduces male fertility. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of body mass index (BMI) on semen parameters in infertile men. Subject and method: A total of 446 infertile men, the study population was divided into four groups depending on their BMI , underweight (<18.5 kg/), normal weight (18.5-24.99 kg/m2 ), overweight 25-29.99 kg/m2), and obese >30.0 kg/.semen parameters (PH, volume, concentration ,total semen count ,vitality, morphology and motility ) were compared across the four BMI groups. Results: The mean of age was 41.91±6.39, the mean infertility duration was 4.92±3.28, 351(78.7٪) had primary infertility and 95(21.3٪) had secondary infertility. The mean BMI was 29.38± 4.85 and the most of patients 45.2٪ were obese. Conclusion: This study has found evidence of an association between BMI and semen parameters (Sperm concentration, Total sperm count, motility, and vitality) and no correlation between Semen volume, morphology and BMI. Background: The importance of male factor contribution to infertility is well recognised. Semen analysis is an indispensable diagnostic tool in the evaluation of the male partners of infertile couples. Aim and objective of the study was conducted to determine the abnormalities in semen among male partners in infertile couples. Detailed history, examination and Methods: semen analysis was done. Semen samples were analysed for volume, viscosity, sperm concentration, motility, and morphology, according to WHO guidelines. This study, done at Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of Results: JLNMCH, Bhagalpur, Bihar has demonstrated that abnormal semen quality is a major factor contributing to infertility in couples. Total number of participants were 94. Most of the male partners i.e. 65.96%, who came for infertility evaluation were between 30-39 years of age with 56.38% participants having abnormal semen parameters. The most common abnormality found was asthenozoospermia seen in 35.11% of cases followed by oligozoospermia seen in 25.53% of cases. Teratozoospermia and azoospermia were seen in 7.45% and 4.26% of cases respectively. Males contribute towards infertility in Conclusions: couples signicantly. Abnormal semen pattern is a common cause. More research is needed to render more valuable and signicant results regarding male infertility

Male infertility, while having a variety of causes, is generally discussed in terms of semen parameters. While the World Health Organization (WHO) have been able io set limits for semen parameters below which a male can be considered subfertile (20 million/ml; >50% motility; >50% morphologically normal forms), it is well documented thatin vivoconceptions have been achieved where semen quality falls well outside these limits, and that infertile men may have normal semen parameters. Macleod and Gold in comparing 1000 fertile men and 1000 infertile men, found that significantly more infertile men had sperm densities below 20 million/ml, but also that 60% of infertile men had sperm densities of 60 million or more. Jouannet and Feneaux have shown that the conception ratein vivoonly apparently falls significantly at sperm concentrations of less than five million/ml. Although the cause of subnormal semen analysis is unknown in the majority of cases, there is no reason to suppose that abnormal semen parameters on their own are the cause of infertility. Rather the problem may be caused by failure of sufficient numbers of sperm traversing the female tract and reaching the oocyte. Unfortunately, lack of defined diagnoses lead to a lack of direct treatment for subnormal semen parameters. The development ofin vitrofertilization (IVF) resulted in a method that could be used to circumvent the problem since it requires relatively low numbers of sperm and these are placed in the immediate vicinity of the oocyte. It should also be pointed out that normal semen parameters do not imply fertility, since these parameters cannot directly identify dysfunction. IVF offers the advantage that sperm-oocyte interractions can be observed, and in cases of fertilization failure, the point at which sperm dysfunction manifests itself may potentially be identified – if not the nature of the dysfunction. Techniques have now been developed that may overcome certain types of dysfunction, using both biochemical and mechanical means.

The current study aimed at measuring changes in semen quality and quantity in young healthy sperm of the partner in western Algeria over 15 years. A retrospective analysis of semen parameters over 15 years was carried out using linear regression analysis, at the fertility laboratory in West Algeria. Study population consisted of 188 young partners, aged 25 to 35 years, who donated sperm samples for artificial insemination between 2000 and 2015. Their wives with infertility problems were surveyed using questionnaire about their lifestyles and infertility factors. There were no statistically significant changes in semen concentration and motility during the study period. The mean semen volume increased by 0.1 mL per year (P < 0.0001), with a concomitant mean rise of 5.8 × 106 per year in total motile sperm count. The percentage of sperm normal morphology decreased by a mean of 1% per year during the entire period (P < 0.0001). During these 15 past years, there has been an increase in total motile sperm count, and semen volume where-as, a decline in normal sperm morphology has been noticed that is independ-ent of the age and the duration of abstinence of infertile men.
