Several austenitic stainless steels suitable for high temperature applications because of their high corrosion resistance and excellent mechanical properties were investigated as biomaterials for dental use. The steels were evaluated by electrochemical techniques such as potentiodynamic polarization curves, cyclic polarization curves, measurements of open circuit potential, and linear polarization resistance. The performance of steels was evaluated in two types of environments: artificial saliva and mouthwash solution at 37°C for 48 hours. In order to compare the behavior of steels, titanium a material commonly used in dental applications was also tested in the same conditions. Results show that tested steels have characteristics that may make them attractive as biomaterials for dental applications. Contents of Cr, Ni, and other minor alloying elements (Mo, Ti, and Nb) determine the performance of stainless steels. In artificial saliva steels show a corrosion rate of the same order of magnitude as titanium and in mouthwash have greater corrosion resistance than titanium.

Abstract The presented paper studies the effect of the casting technology on the corrosion resistance of Co-Cr-Mo alloy. The investigations were conducted on a commercial alloy with the brand name ARGELOY N.P SPECIAL (Co-Cr-Mo) produced by Argen as well as the same alloy melted and cast by the lost wax casting method performed by a dental technician. The corrosion behavior of the dental alloys in an artificial saliva was studied with the use of the following electrochemical techniques: open circuit potential and voltammetry. After the electrochemical tests, studies of the surface of the examined alloys were performed by means of a scanning electron microscope with an X-ray microanalyzer. The results of the electrochemical studies show that the dependence of the corrosion resistance on the microstructure associated with the recasting process is marginal. The results of the electrochemical studies of the considered alloy clearly point to their good corrosion resistance in the discussed environment.

Development of biocompatible dental implants has become significant impact in dental industry. In the present work, we report for the development of biocompatible nano Yttria stabilised Zirconia (YSZ) coatings on 316L stainless steel (316L SS) obtained by EPD process. The optimized sample (nano YSZ coating on 316 obtained at applied potential of 70 V for 5 minutes) were sintered in air at 600, 800 and 900°C. The surface morphology and composition of the coatings were characterized by XRD and FE-SEM with EDAX. The electrochemical performance of the uncoated metal and nano YSZ coated 316L SS samples were evaluated in artificial saliva (AS) medium using electrochemical techniques such as Open Circuit Potential – time measurement (OCP), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Cyclic Potentiodynamic Polarization (CPP).

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the corrosion resistance of the experimental alloy Ti-35Nb-7Zr-5Ta, modified by laser beam, in a physiological solution of 0.9% NaCl. This evaluation was carried out by open circuit potential analysis (EOCP), potentiodynamic polarization curves and cyclic polarization curves. The open circuit potential curves show the specimen irradiated by laser beam at 35 Hz presented a more stable and corrosion resistant surface. It was observed in the polarization curves, low current densities in the order of nA /cm2, for all specimen indicating an expected passive behavior for the investigated alloy. The cyclic polarization curves show that for specimen treated with laser, the potential for repassivation (Er) is greater in relation to the potential for corrosion (Ecorr), which indicates greater resistance to corrosion of metal alloys when treated with laser.

Platinum (Pt.) thin films have been deposited by Magnetron Sputtering Deposition method with 25 nm and 50 nm thickness by used power RF for deposited 5 nm Titanium (Ti) firstly then used DC for deposited Platinum (Pt) on Ni-Cr alloy substrate. SEM/EDX and Ellipsometry Spectroscopy have been used to investigate the morphology, element analysis, nanothickness and roughness of the thin films respectively. Electrochemical corrosion tests have been used to analyze the localized corrosion resistance by used cyclic polarization, Tafel extrapolation and open circuit potential (o.c.p) methods on artificial saliva solution at 37  ±1 oC. The results show the ability to deposit 5 nm of Ti before deposited of Pt. film to improve the adhesive of the films, nanostructure morphology of the Pt. film without defect or microcracks, nanocoatings thickness of Pt. film, and high localized corrosion resistance in artificial saliva corrosive media.

The corrosion behavior of GW63 (Mg-6wt.%Gd-3wt.%Y-0.4wt.%Zr) alloys in 5% NaCl aqueous solution has been investigated by PARSTAT 2273 instrument. The Open Circuit Potential (ECORR) vs. time curve, cyclic polarization (Pitting Scans) curve and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) was measured for the GW63 alloys in as-cast and T6 heat treatment conditions. The EIS results indicated that the tendency of impedance variation for as-cast condition was monotonic decreasing, however, the tendency of variation for T6 condition was not completely monotonic but the total tendency was decreasing. The values of impedance of GW63 alloy at 0.1 Hz are about 103 ohm-cm2 for as-cast and T6 condition.

Abstract CarTech 347 is a niobium+tantalum stabilized austenitic stainless steel. Like Type 321 austenitic stainless steel, it has superior intergranular corrosion resistance as compared to typical 18-8 austenitic stainless steels. Since niobium and tantalum have stronger affinity for carbon than chromium, carbides of those elements tend to precipitate randomly within the grains instead of forming continuous patterns at the grain boundaries. CarTech 347 should be considered for applications requiring intermittent heating between 425 and 900 °C (800 and 1650 °F).
