Glycaemic control, in particular at postprandial period, has a key role in prevention of different diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular events. Previous studies suggest that postprandial high blood glucose levels (BGL) can lead to an oxidative stress status, which is associated with metabolic alterations. Cinnamon powder has demonstrated a beneficial effect on postprandial glucose homeostasis in animals and human models. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of cinnamon tea (C. burmannii) on postprandial capillary blood glucose level on nondiabetic adults. Participants were given oral glucose tolerance test either with or without cinnamon tea in a randomized clinical trial. The data revealed that cinnamon tea administration slightly decreased postprandial BGL. Cinnamon tea ingestion also results in a significantly lower postprandial maximum glucose concentration and variation of maximum glucose concentration (p< 0.05). Chemical analysis showed that cinnamon tea has a high antioxidant capacity, which may be due to its polyphenol content. The present study provides evidence that cinnamon tea, obtained fromC. burmannii, could be beneficial for controlling glucose metabolism in nondiabetic adults during postprandial period.

Background: Corrigiola telephiifolia Pourr, is a perennial species, woody distributed throughout the north of Africa. This plant is used in traditional Mediterranean preparations and has many traditional uses especially treatment of diabetes. Aim/Methods: The current research was carried out to evaluate the antidiabetic effect of Aerial Parts of Aqueous Extract (APAE) of Corrigiola telephiifolia (C. telephiifolia) on both normal and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats treated at a dose of 5 mg/kg for fifteen days. Additionally, the histopathological changes in the liver, morphometric analysis, Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) in normal rats and preliminary phytochemical screening for various components were realized. Results: Single oral administration of the APAE of C. telephiifolia (5mg/kg) showed no significant change in glycaemia of normal and STZ-induced diabetic rats. In contrast, repeated oral administration of C. telephiifolia reduced blood glucose levels from 4.11 ± 0.10 mmol/L to 3.16 ± 0.16 mmol/L (p<0.01) 15 days after administration in normal rats. Furthermore, blood glucose levels decreased from 17.84 ± 1.75mmol/L to 1.93 ± 0.33 mmol/L (p<0.0001) in STZ diabetic rats after fifteen days of treatment. According to the oral glucose tolerance test, C. telephiifolia (5 mg/kg) was shown to prevent significantly the increase in blood glucose levels in normal treated rats 30 min after glucose administration when compared to the control group. Also, the liver architecture of diabetic rats treated by C. telephiifolia was improved when compared with the liver architecture of untreated diabetic rats. Concerning the preliminary phytochemical screening of C. telephiifolia, several compounds have been found such as polyphenols, flavonoids, saponins, mucilage and terpenoids. Conclusion: The results show that the aqueous extract of C. telephiifolia possesses significant antihyperglycemic activity.

<p>The purpose of this study is to evaluate the hypoglycaemic properties and preliminary phytochemical screening of <em>Uveria chamae</em>. The hypoglycaemic properties of <em>Uveria chamae</em> was assessed on normoglycaemic rat that received single dose of the extract at 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight and blood glucose levels estimated at 2, 4, and 6 hours (single dose study). The hypoglycaemic property of the extract was also evaluated in normoglycemic rats by oral glucose tolerance test. Phytochemical screening of the extract for the presence of secondary metabolites was performed with standard methods. The extract showed a significant (p&lt;0.05) reduction in blood glucose levels at 2h and 6h compared to control.  The oral glucose tolerance test  result also showed a significant decrease (p&lt;0.05) in blood glucose levels . The study showed that the extract, <em>Uveria chamae</em> has hypoglycaemic properties which may be accounted for by the presence of the phytochemicals.</p><p> </p>

Background: Diabetes mellitus is associated with high blood glucose levels due to insulin shortcoming (insulinopenia) or defective insulin action. The objective of the study was to investigate the antidiabetic and antioxidant effects of Foeniculum vulgare in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat. Methods: The effects of the leaves aqueous extract (LAE) of Foeniculum vulgare (F. vulgare) at a dose of 10 mg/kg on blood glucose levels were evaluated in normal and streptozotocin (STZ)- induced diabetic rats. Histopathological changes were also evaluated in liver in STZ-induced rats. Results: Single oral administration of F. vulgare LAE reduced blood glucose levels 6 h after administration in STZ diabetic rats (p<0.0001). Furthermore, blood glucose levels were decreased in both normal (p<0.05) and STZ diabetic rats (p<0.0001) after the fifteenth day of treatment. During this test, both groups did not show any significant change in their body weight. Moreover, this aqueous extract improved oral glucose tolerance in diabetic rats and revealed a positive effect on liver histology. On the other hand, the extract used in this experiment showed an inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 50% of free radicals with a concentration of 43±1.19 µg/ml. While the synthetic antioxidant (BHT) had an IC50 equal to 22.67±2.17µg /ml. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the antihyperglycemic, hypoglycemic and antioxidant effects of the leaves of F. vulgare in normal and diabetic rats.

Olanzapine is an antipsychotic drug and has been reported to induce impaired glucose tolerance leading to high blood glucose levels. In oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT), methanolic extract of steamed cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata) (MEBO) leaves have been shown to reduce elevated blood glucose levels in glucose-loaded mice. It was thus of interest to determine whether MEBO leaves can ameliorate olanzapineinduced impaired glucose tolerance in mice, which have been administered olanzapine for 28 days. Impaired glucose tolerance was measured through OGTT in mice. Olanzapine (28 days)-administered mice showed elevated blood glucose in OGTT. MEBO leaves showed significant reduction of blood glucose level in OGTT in mice (compared to vehicle or olanzapine treated mice for 28 days, Groups 2 and 3, respectively) both when administered for 28 days along with olanzapine, as well when administered 60 min prior to glucose loading in OGTT (positive control glibenclamide administered at 10 mg/kg). A single dose of MEBO (400 mg/kg) was used based on previous studies. Thus, MEBO leaves can be beneficial for improving glucose tolerance and reduce blood glucose levels in olanzapine-induced elevated blood glucose levels.

Abstract We describe the case of a 54-year-old Caucasian Italian male experiencing episodes of hypoglycemia, occurring mainly after meals. He had never been exposed to insulin and was taking ramipril, flecainide and acetylsalicylic acid. An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) showed high blood glucose levels diagnostic for diabetes mellitus at 120 min and hypoglycemia with inappropriately high insulin levels at 240 min. The 72-h fasting test, abdominal computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography-CT were normal. Insulin autoantibodies were positive at high titers, prompting a diagnosis of insulin autoimmune syndrome (IAS). The patient was advised to take frequent, small meals and thus achieved a good control of his hypoglycemic symptoms. After 18 months of this dietary management, his insulin autoantibody levels decreased considerably but remained detectable. During an OGTT, his blood glucose levels at 120 min were now indicative of an impaired glucose tolerance rather than diabetes, and there was improvement in the glucose nadir. The patient had no other clinical or latent autoimmune diseases. Here we discuss the main features of IAS (also known as Hirata’s disease) and review the cases of IAS reported in Italy to date.

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by a high blood glucose concentration, i.e., hyperglycemia or caused by insulin deficiency, often combined with insulin resistance. In the Present study, the antidiabetic and antioxidant activity of the methanolic extract of Tagetes patula flower heads was screened out in rodent models. The pharmacological evaluation was carried out using 200 and 400 mg/kg, b.w. The in-vivo antidiabetic activity was performed in streptozotocin, dexamethasone-induced diabetic models and oral glucose tolerance test. Metformin hydrochloride was used as a standard. The parameters like blood glucose levels, insulin levels, homeostasis assessment of insulin resistance, insulin sensitivity, and fasting glucose-insulin ratio were estimated in these models. The in-vitro antioxidant activity of methanolic extract of Tagetes patula was performed by using hydroxyl radical scavenging assay and Ascorbic acid was used as a standard. The preliminary phytochemical screening of Tagetes patula revealed the presence of phytoconstituents like alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids, phenols, carbohydrates, triterpenoids, and tannins. The extract showed a significant decrease in the elevated blood glucose levels in streptozotocin, dexamethasone-induced diabetic models, and also in the oral glucose tolerance test. The extract prevented insulin resistance and significantly increased insulin sensitivity in the dexamethasone-induced model. The various phytochemical constituents like alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids, and phenols might be responsible for lowering the blood glucose levels in the animal models mentioned above. The extract showed significant scavenging activity against hydroxyl free radicals. From the above outcomes, it is flawless that the methanolic extract of Tagetes patula has antidiabetic and antioxidant activities.

Objective The objective of the present study was to compare 24-hour glycemic levels between obese pregnant women with normal glucose tolerance and non-obese pregnant women. Methods In the present observational, longitudinal study, continuous glucose monitoring was performed in obese pregnant women with normal oral glucose tolerance test with 75 g of glucose between the 24th and the 28th gestational weeks. The control group (CG) consisted of pregnant women with normal weight who were selected by matching the maternal age and parity with the same characteristics of the obese group (OG). Glucose measurements were obtained during 72 hours. Results Both the groups were balanced in terms of baseline characteristics (age: 33.5 [28.7–36.0] vs. 32.0 [26.0–34.5] years, p = 0.5 and length of pregnancy: 25.0 [24.0–25.0] vs. 25.5 [24.0–28.0] weeks, p = 0.6 in the CG and in the OG, respectively). Pre-breakfast glycemic levels were 77.77 ± 10.55 mg/dL in the CG and 82.02 ± 11.06 mg/dL in the OG (p<0.01). Glycemic levels at 2 hours after breakfast were 87.31 ± 13.10 mg/dL in the CG and 93.48 ± 18.74 mg/dL in the OG (p<0.001). Daytime blood glucose levels were 87.6 ± 15.4 vs. 93.1 ± 18.3 mg/dL (p<0.001) and nighttime blood glucose levels were 79.3 ± 15.8 vs. 84.7 ± 16.3 mg/dL (p<0.001) in the CG and in the OG, respectively. The 24-hour, daytime, and nighttime values of the area under the curve were higher in the OG when compared with the CG (85.1 ± 0.16 vs. 87.9 ± 0.12, 65.6 ± 0.14 vs. 67.5 ± 0.10, 19.5 ± 0.07 vs. 20.4 ± 0.05, respectively; p<0.001). Conclusion The results of the present study showed that obesity in pregnancy was associated with higher glycemic levels even in the presence of normal findings on glucose tolerance test.
