Previous studies showed that silica nanoparticles based fresh water drilling muds had good thermal stability up to 160°C; however its performance at high salt concentration was rather poor. Therefore, high performance silica nanoparticles based brine mud (NPBMs) with high temperature resistance for horizontal shale gas wells was proposed. Thermal stability tests from ambient temperature to 180°C, along with pressure transmission tests and rheology analysis, were performed to evaluate comprehensive properties of the NPBMs. Results show that the NPBMs embody excellent salt tolerance and thermal resistance for their rheological parameters did not suffer significant fluctuation. Fluid loss of the NPBM-1 (4% NaCl plus 3% KCl) at 180°C was only 7.6 mL while the NPBM-2 (10% NaCl plus 3% KCl) had a fluid loss of 6.6 mL at 150°C. Low water activity and good lubricity of the NPBMs were beneficial to improve wellbore stability and reduce friction resistance. Pressure transmission tests on the NPBM-1 show that it can mitigate or even prevent the transmission of drilling mud pressure into shale thus improving wellbore stability. Additionally, optimal rheological models for the NPBM-1 and the NPBM-2 were Herschel-Bulkley model and Power Law model separately.

With the exploration of oil and gas in depth, shallow wells already can’t satisfy the requirement, therefore to explore and develop deep reservoirs is necessary. In the case of deep wells the loop temperature of bottom can reach to 150°C-200°C, which put forward a higher requirement for the high temperature resistance property of cement slurry. At present, many problems existed in the most of high temperature cement slurry. For example, high temperature resistance is not well, cement thickening time can’t adjust easily, mega-thermal sedimentation stability is unsatisfactory, and ultra-retarding phenomenon appeared for the top prone. After research indoors, we developed the ultra-high temperature slurry system by means of the investigation on cementing additives and select proper materials from high temperature resistant fluid loss additives, retarders, flowable agent at the same time. This system needs a lots of properties, such as, adjustable slurry thickening time below 200°C, great slurry sedimentation stability, API loss can be controlled at the range of 0-50ml, insensitive to temperature and density, could be used in low-density and conventional density cement etc. This system be used successfully in the well that loop temperature of bottom reaches to 185°C and get a good effect finally.

It is significant and necessary to carry out the research and development of self-lubricating bearing. The current study of metal matrix self-lubricating bearing materials is summarized. A new type of high temperature self-lubricating Ti-Al alloy bearing materials is proposed. It is light, anti-friction, anti-corrosion and high temperature resistance (600 °C). The future trend is introduced in the end of this paper.
