Magnetorheological (MR) fluid shows different performances under different temperature, which causes so many problems like the reduction of rheological properties of MR fluid under a high temperature condition, the uncontrollability of shear stress, and even failure of transmission; on that basis, the influence of temperature on the performance of MR fluid and the cause of the rise in temperature of MR transmission device are analyzed in this paper; the shearing transmission performance of the MR transmission device under the effect of an external magnetic field and the influence of temperature on the shearing stress and transmission performance are analyzed. The study results indicate that temperature highly influences the viscosity of MR fluid, and the viscosity influences the shear stress of the MR fluid. The viscosity of MR fluid gradually declines when temperature rises from 100°C. Once the temperature exceeds 100°C, the viscosity would increase and the temperature stability would decline. Temperature obviously influences the characteristics of MR transmission, and particularly, highly influences the characteristics of MR transmission once being higher than 100°C. The chaining of the material in the magnetic field is influenced, which causes the reduction of the rheological properties, the uncontrollability of the shear stress, and even the failure of transmission.

Different concentration of spherical iron particles (7 to 8 μm) are dispersed in silicone oil to increase the stability with smectite. The concentration of iron particles is maintained between 2 and 40 volume %. The solenoid coil surrounding the cylinders applies the magnetic field in the longitudinal direction of cylinder, when the cylindrical viscometer is employed. As the magnetic field increases, the diameter of chain structure also increases. The shear stress versus shear rate is proportional relation since the viscosity enlarges as the magnetic field increases at small concentration of iron in MR fluid. Additionally, the more increase of the magnetic field strength caused the decrease of the shear stresses at large concentration of iron in MR fluid, while the share rate is increased for the open system of the cylinders. It is assumed that wider clusters or wider chain structures are partly produced in the cylinder under the certain magnetic field. Therefore, the shear stress is not uniformly increased. On the other hand, when the cone and plate viscometer is used, the magnetic field direction is perpendicular to the flow direction. The shear stress versus share rate behaves like a Bingham fluid type under the effect of the magnetic field. As increasing the iron particles volume %, the chain structures cannot increase and make other ring type structures. When the magnetic field is measured by hall probe, the magnetic field decreased at some amount of volume percentage of iron suspension because of shield effect.

Abstract In this paper we proposed a platform for measuring shear force of magnetorheological (MR) fluid by which the relationship of yield stress and magnetic flux density of specific material can be determined. The device consisted of a rotatable center tube in a frame body and the magnetic field was provided by two blocks of permanent magnets placed oppositely outside the frame body. The magnitude and direction of the magnetic field were manipulated by changing the distance of the two permanent magnets from the frame body and rotating the center tube, respectively. For determining the magnetic field of the device, we adopted an effective method by fitting the FEM (finite element method) result to the measured one and then rebuilt the absent components to approximate the magnetic field, which was hardly to be measured simultaneously as different device setup were required. With the proposed platform and analytical methods, the drawing shear force and the corresponding yield stress contributed by MR fluid could be evaluated in respect to the magnitude and direction of given magnetic flux density with acceptable accuracy for specific designing purposes without a large, complex, and expensive instrument.

In order to explore the influence of temperature on track circuit, a mathematical simulation model of track circuit is established. Then, the influence mechanism of temperature on the key equipment of track circuit is analysed. Finally, the influence on the receiver voltage and the locomotive signal current are computed based on the simulation model.

Magnetorheological (MR) fluids are materials that respond to an applied magnetic field with a change in their rheological properties. Upon application of a magnetic field, MR fluids have a variable yield strength. Altering the strength of the applied magnetic field will control the yield stress of these fluids. In this paper, the method for measuring the yield stress of MR fluids is proposed. The curves between the yield stress of the MR fluid and the applied magnetic field are obtained from the experiment. The result indicates that with the increase of the applied magnetic field the yield stress of the MR fluids goes up rapidly.

Digital holographic microscopy is presented in this study, which can measure the magnetorheological (MR) fluid in different volume fractions of particles and different magnetic field strengths. Based on the chain structure of magnetic particle under applied magnetic field, the relationships between shear yield stress, magnetic field, size, and volume fraction of MR fluid in two parallel discs are established. In this experiment, we choose three MR fluid samples to check the rheological properties of MR fluid and to obtain the material parameters with the test equipment of MR fluid; the conclusion is effective.

In this paper, the effect of particle concentration and magnetic field on the tribological behavior of magneto-rheological (MR) fluid is investigated using a pin-on-disc tribometer. The wear loss and friction coefficient are measured to study the friction and wear properties of MR fluid. The morphology of the worn pin is also observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) in order to analyze the wear mechanism. The results obtained in this work show that the wear loss and friction coefficient decrease with increasing particle concentration under the magnetic field. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the magnetic field has a significant effect on improving tribological properties of MR fluid, especially the one with high particle concentration. The predominant wear mechanism of the MR fluid has been identified as abrasive wear.

In this study the analysis of the magnetic field distribution of an electromagnet is presented. This electromagnet is used as an actuator in a semi-active vibration control of the three-layer beam with MR fluid. Two separate numerical methods are used for the purpose of calculating the magnetic field distribution. The first method is based on the Finite Element Method and implemented using ANSYS software. The second, simplified one is based on the assumption that the electromagnet can be substituted by a simple magnetic circuit divided into separate paths, with each sub-path defined by the value of reluctance of the corresponding electromagnet part. The comparison of the results from both methods with the ones obtained from an experiment is also presented and analyzed in the paper.

The present paper focuses on preparation and process of the magnetorheological (MR) fluid whose carrier fluid is silicone-based oil and its additive is the commercial grease with different concentration of iron particles. General properties of MR fluid are discussed and rheological properties like shear rate, shear stress, viscosity of MR fluid can be found by using cone-and-plate sensor system-type rheometer. The result shows that shear stress as a function of magnetic flux density and viscosity does not strictly scale with iron loading.

With the purpose of studying the main influence on the cylinder-typed magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) clutch, the relationship between the output of shear stress and its affecting factors is presented in this paper; through theoretical derivation from the Bingham Model and the cylinder-typed shear model, the stress born by the MRF in the clutch is analysed, and the affecting factors on the clutch is also simulated and verified through experiments. The study shows that as the magnetic field strengthens, the shear stress of the cylinder-typed MRF clutch grows linearly, with proportionality constant at 0.162; the increase of shear rate, relevant to the magnetic field strength, makes little difference to the torque output, with proportionality constant at 0.00026B. The results indicate that mechanical-electrical integration of clutch devices can be achieved through the control of magnetic field output of the electromagnet.
