To determine the hysteretic fracture mechanism of the hard and naturally cracked surrounding rock mass, uniaxial and biaxial compression tests were performed on rhyolite specimens. In the biaxial compression test, displacements and strains around the U-shaped opening were monitored throughout to study the fracture pattern and distribution of stress. To compare with the experimental results, the finite difference codeFLAC3Dwas used to simulate a perfectly intact rock model with the same geometric and mechanical conditions in a continuum model. Stress-strain curves under uniaxial compression and the surrounding rock stresses of numerical results were compared with laboratory test. On one hand, laboratory test and numerical results all showed that tensile fracture regions were found at the crown and floor of the opening while shear regions are found at the sidewall. On the other hand, due to microcracks in the laboratory specimen, the laboratory test showed lower ultimate compressive strength. However, its vertical displacement of initial fracture was larger than those of numerical model which did not consider about the microcracks. They revealed the hysteretic fracture behaviour of underground opening in hard and cracked rock.

In this paper, quasi-static axial compression tests are performed on the nodal Moso bamboos to study the size effect on energy absorption of the bamboos and the damage pattern of the multiple bamboo columns. Experimental results show that under the same moisture content, growth age and growing environment, the specific energy absorption (SEA) of the test samples increases with the increase of the out-diameter and thickness of the bamboo columns, indicating that size effect exists for energy absorption of the Moso Bamboos. For the multiple bamboo columns, there are mainly three failure modes for the constituent single bamboo columns: splitting above the node, splitting below the node and splitting through the node. Also, the tensile tests are conducted on three kinds of dog-bone shaped bamboo samples to investigate the macroscopic tensile fracture mode in the longitudinal direction of Moso bamboos. Results show that there is no direct relationship between the fracture pattern and moisture content of the bamboos, as well as the growth age of the bamboos. However, the tensile loading rate and the shape of the dog-bone shaped bamboo sample could affect the macroscopic fracture pattern of the bamboos in some cases.

Abstract In some tensile tests with brittle materials, it was noted that fractures were produced at two different cross sections of the specimen when the rupture load was reached. The phenomenon of the second fracture prompted the present investigation. It is believed that the second fracture is caused by the destructive action of the elastic strain waves created during the first of the two fractures. The analytical and experimental work carried out was focused on describing the character of these waves. Consideration of the mechanics involved reduces the problem to that of a vibrating cantilever beam with time-dependent boundary conditions. Two types of waves are shown to exist. The first is a longitudinal unloading wave (compression). The other is a group of flexural strain waves caused by the moment that develops at the initial fracture section. The methods of operational mathematics and the electric-analog computer have been employed in the analytical study.

When saturated granular materials which are dilative in nature are subjected to the undrained deformation, their strength increases due to the generation of negative excess pore pressure. This phenomenon is known as dilative hardening and can be witnessed in saturated dense sand or rocks during very fast loading. However, experimental evidence of undrained biaxial compression tests of dense sand shows a limit to this dilative hardening due to the formation of shear bands. There is no consensus in the literature about the mechanism which triggers these shear bands in the dense dilative sand under isochoric constraint. The possible theoretical reasoning is the local drainage inside the specimen under the globally undrained condition, which is challenging to be monitored experimentally. Hence, both incept of localisation and post-bifurcation of the saturated undrained dense sand demand further numerical investigation. Pathological mesh dependency hinders the ability of the finite element method to represent the localisation without advanced regularisation methods. This paper attempt to provide a macroscopic constitutive behaviour of the undrained deformation of the saturated dense sand in the presence of a locally drained shear band. Discontinuation of dilatant hardening due to partial drainage between the shear band and the adjacent material is integrated into the constitutive model without changing governing equilibrium equations. Initially, a classical bifurcation analysis is conducted to detect the inception and inclination of the shear band based on the underlying drained deformation. Then a post-bifurcation analysis is carried out assuming an embedded drained or partially drained shear band at gauss points which satisfy bifurcation criterion. The smeared shear band approach is utilised to homogenise the constitutive relationship. It is observed that the dilatant hardening in the saturated undrained dense sand is reduced considerably due to the formation of shear bands.

Investigating the crack initiation stress of rocks is vital for understanding the gradual damage process of rocks and the evolution law of internal cracks. In this paper, the particle flow code method is used to conduct biaxial compression tests on a marble model with an elliptical crack under different confining pressures. According to the evolution status of microcracks in the rock during compression, four characteristic stresses are defined to reflect the gradual damage process of the marble. Two different methods are used to obtain crack initiation stress of rocks, and the calculation results are compared with those based on Griffith’s strength theory to verify the accuracy of this theory under compressive stress. Based on the numerical simulation results, the evolution law for the strength parameters of marble with the degree of damage is described. According to the proportional relationship between the peak stress and crack initiation stress, a new method for predicting the initiation stress is proposed, whose effectiveness is verified. Overall, the results of this study can serve as a useful guide for solving the important problems of slab cracking and rockburst encountered in underground space engineering.

Geological strength index GSI, disturbance factor (D), material constant mi, and uniaxial compressive strength σci of the intact rock are essential input parameters IPs of the Hoek–Brown H−B criterion. Mechanical parameters MPs of the engineering rock mass, including elastic modulus E, cohesion c, and internal friction angle φ estimated by the H–B criterion, and the predicted excavation response of surrounding rock, including the displacement and excavation damage zone EDZ based on the MPs, are of high relevance with the four IPs of the H–B criterion. In this paper, the deep and huge underground cavern excavated in basalt from a hydropower station under construction in the southwest of China is used to analyse the sensitivity of the IPs on the MPs, the displacement, and EDZ of the surrounding rock mass. Firstly, the H–B criterion is applied to estimate the MPs, among which the IPs are obtained from a series of in situ and laboratory tests, including borehole camera observation, wave velocity test, uniaxial and triaxial compression tests, and so on. Secondly, the sensitivity relationships between IPs, MPs, and prediction results of displacement and EDZ are established and described quantitatively by the sensitivity factor (si). Results show that the MPs of the rock mass are more sensitive to GSI and D⋅GSI and σci are high-sensitivity parameters affecting the displacement and EDZ. Finally, the variations in the estimated MPs and associated prediction results concerning excavation response, which are caused by the uncertainties in the determination of the IPs, are further quantified. This study provides a straightforward assessment for the variability of the rock mass parameters estimated by the H–B criterion. It also gives a valuable reference to similar geotechnical engineering for the determination of rock mass parameters in the preliminary design.

The presence of weak interlayers and groundwater are common adverse geological conditions in tunnels. To investigate the modes of failure of rock masses surrounding tunnels owing to weak interlayers and groundwater, model tests and numerical simulations were conducted in this study based on two cases, and a model that considers only the weak interlayer was conducted for comparison. Based on the tests, differences between two models in terms of rock pressure, displacement, cracks and strain were analysed. The results reveal that the presence of groundwater has a significant effect on the space–time distribution of stress, displacement and cracks in the surrounding rock. Furthermore, based on the numerical model, the seepage field was analysed in terms of pore water pressure, permeability and the seepage process to understand the joint action of groundwater and weak interlayer on the failure mechanism of tunnels. The results show that the groundwater and interlayer complement each other to induce the failure mode of the surrounding rock. The water accelerates slip in the interlayer and the development of cracks. Conversely, low strength, muddy weak interlayers serve as the channels of water flow, resulting in deformations and cracks at different locations and different failure modes.

Dalian speed railway tunnel is located in complex soft rock and soil, the road foundation deform and surrounding rock stability control is a concern problem. Along with the unloading process of excavation, surrounding rock moving to inner hole, while exceeding the elastic limitation, the plastic deform and the surrounding rock destroy then occurred. The paper adopted three dimensional elastic-plastic method based on Mohr-Coulomb yielding criterion and carried out numerical simulation of excavation process, in order to analyze and compare the surrounding rock vertical displacement contour, ground surface settlement and damage zone corresponding to different construction sequence. The elastic-plastic numerical method can reflect the damage and destroy character of nonlinear soil material of surrounding rock corresponding to different construction scheme, the simulation result has active guiding meaning for the Dalian speed railway tunnel construction design and dynamic analysis.

The Cu50Zr42Al8dumbbell-shaped alloy with original scale distance of 25 mm and diameters of 4.5 mm was prepared by the suspend melting-copper mould suction casting. The structure tensile performance testing and the fracture morphology observation of Cu50Zr42Al8BMG as-quenched and 400k/1h isothermal annealing were investigated, respectively. The deformation and fracture behavior of samples had been studied. The results showed that the structure of all samples were composed of amorphous phase and possess good glass formation abilitysample as-quenched is always in the elastic deformation stage during elongation and the tensile strength is 629MPa; however ,for specimen after 400k/1h isothermal annealing ,the yield phenomenon occurs before breaking and the maximum tensile strength is 755Mpa, and the same time, the maximum failure extensibility increases from 0.56% for sample as-quenched to 0.80% for 400k/1h isothermal annealing. The fracture pattern of test sample at annealing assumes venation pattern, which is similar to fractography of Cu50Zr42Al8BMG as-quenched, in addition, which appeared apparent viscous flow behavior and melting characteristics.

This paper presents a set of uniaxial and biaxial compression tests on the rock-like material specimens with different fracture geometries through a rock mechanics servo-controlled testing system (RMT-150C). On the basis of experimental results, the characteristics of fracture propagation under different fracture geometries and loading conditions are firstly obtained. The newly formed fractures are observed propagating from or near the preexisting crack tips for different specimens, while the propagation paths are affected by the loading condition obviously. Then, by adopting acoustic emission (AE) location technique, AE event localization characteristics in the process of loading are investigated. The locations of AE events are in good agreement with the macroscopic fracture propagation path. Finally, the micromechanism of macroscopic fracture propagation under uniaxial and biaxial compression conditions is analyzed, and the fracture propagation can be concluded as a result of microdamage accumulation inside the material. The results of this paper are helpful for theory and engineering design of the fractured rock mass.
