Stress waves propagate in soil in case of earthquake and man-made effects (traffic flow, buried explosions, shield-driven pipes and tunnels, etc.). The wave point-sources are those located at the distances equal to more than two waves lengths, which significantly simplifies solving of a problem of these waves’ strength evaluation. Distribution of stress and displacement by the stress waves propagation in elastic medium is a complex pattern. The stress distribution in propagating waves depends on the type and form of source, conditions of the source contact with medium, and properties of mediums in the vicinity of the source. The point-sources and their combinations are selected in such a way to model an influence of machines and processes on soil body in case of shield-driven pipes (tunnels).

1. In this paper an analysis is given of the distribution of stress in a semi-infinite elastic medium due to the action of an external force applied to the interior of the medium. It will be assumed throughout that the force acts in a direction perpendicular to that of the boundary of the solid; the analysis is similar when the line of action of the force is parallel to the boundary and is therefore not given here. The equations of plane strain parallel to the x-y plane are employed; physically this is equivalent to assuming that there is no component of the displacement vector in a direction normal to the x-y plane or, what is the same thing, that the external force is applied along are infinite line parallel to the axis of z.

As cutting tool penetrates into workpiece, stress waves is induced and propagates in the workpiece. This paper aims to propose a two-dimensional discrete element method to analyze the stress waves effects during high speed milling. The dependence of the stress waves propagation characteristics on rake angle and cutting speed was studied. The simulation results show that the energy distribution of stress waves is more concentrated near the tool tip as the rake angle or the cutting speed increases. In addition, the density of initial cracks in the workpiece near the cutting tool increases when the cutting speed is higher. The high speed milling experiments indicate that the chip size decreases as the cutting speed increases, which is just qualitatively consistent with the simulation.


The type of deformation under investigation is indicated by fig. 1. A rectangular plate ABCD is deformed into the shape A'B'C'D'. The two opposing edges AB, CD are shifted horizontally without alteration of length into the position A'B', C'D', the other boundaries AD, BC being kept free from external stress. In a paper which appeared in the 'Proc. Royal Society', December 28, 1911, Prof. E. G. Coker investigated this same type of deformation using optical methods to determine the distribution of stress along the centre line OX. He found that if the plate was square the shear stress along OX was distributed in a munner which was approximately parabolic. As the ratio of AD to AB decreased the curve of distribution first of all became flat-topped, and for yet smaller ratios two distinct humps made their appearance.

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the use of various chaotic pattern recognition methods for traffic flow prediction. Traffic flow is a variable, dynamic and complex system, which is non-linear and unpredictable. The emergence of traffic flow congestion in road traffic is estimated when the traffic load on a specific section of the road in a specific time period is close to exceeding the capacity of the road infrastructure. Under certain conditions, it can be seen in concentrating chaotic traffic flow patterns. The literature review of traffic flow theory and its connection with chaotic features implies that this kind of method has great theoretical and practical value. Researched methods of identifying chaos in traffic flow have shown certain restrictions in their techniques but have suggested guidelines for improving the identification of chaotic parameters in traffic flow. The proposed new method of forecasting congestion in traffic flow uses Wigner-Ville frequency distribution. This method enables the display of a chaotic attractor without the use of reconstruction phase space.

Polyethylene (PE) gas pipes can be jointed together by electrofusion PE fittings, which have sockets that are fused onto the pipe. Additionally, electrofused PE patches can be used to repair defected pipes. When these pipelines are buried under the ground, they can experience sever local stresses due to the presence of pipe joints, which is superimposed on the other effects including the soil-structure interaction, traffic load, soil’s column weight, a uniform internal pressure, and thermal loads imposed by daily and/or seasonal temperature changes. The present contribution includes two cases. At first, stress variations in buried polyethylene gas pipe and its socket due to the aforementioned loading condition is estimated using finite element. The pipe is assumed to be made of PE80 material and its jointing socket material is PE100. Afterward, the effects of aforementioned thermo-mechanical loads on the stress distribution in patch repaired buried pipes are well investigated. The soil physical properties and the underground polyethylene pipe installation method are based on the American association of state highway and transportation officials and American society for testing and material standards. The computer simulation and analysis of stresses are performed through the finite element package of ANSYS Software. Stress concentrations can be observed in both components due to the presence of the socket or the repair patch. According to the results, the electrofusion sockets can be used for joining PE gas pipes even in hot climate areas. The maximum values of these stresses happen to be in the pipe. Also, the PE100 socket is more sensitive to a temperature drop. Additionally, all four studied patch arrangements show significant reinforcing effects on the defected section of the buried PE gas pipe to withstand applied loads. Meanwhile, the defected buried medium density polyethylene (MDPE) gas pipe and its saddle fused patch can resist the imposed mechanical and thermal loads of +22 °C temperature increase.

1. In a recent paper(1) expressions were found for the elastic stresses produced in a semi-infinite elastic medium when its boundary is deformed by the pressure against it of a perfectly rigid body. In deriving the solution of this problem—the ‘Boussinesq’ problem—it was assumed that the normal displacement of a point within the area of contact between the elastic medium and the rigid body is prescribed and that the distribution of pressure over that area is determined subsequently. The solutions for the special cases in which the free surface was indented by a cone, a sphere and a flat-ended cylindrical punch were derived, but no attempt was made to give a full account of the distribution of stress in the interior of the medium in any of these cases.
