This paper develops a novel state-tracking multivariable model reference adaptive control (MRAC) technique utilizing prior knowledge of plant models to recover control performance of an asymmetric structural damaged aircraft. A modification of linear model representation is given. With prior knowledge on structural damage, a polytope linear parameter varying (LPV) model is derived to cover all concerned damage conditions. An MRAC method is developed for the polytope model, of which the stability and asymptotic error convergence are theoretically proved. The proposed technique reduces the number of parameters to be adapted and thus decreases computational cost and requires less input information. The method is validated by simulations on NASA generic transport model (GTM) with damage.

This paper studies design and evaluation of a multivariable model reference adaptive control (MRAC) scheme for aircraft systems under simultaneous actuator failures and structural damage. A key design condition–system infinite zero structure is investigated for nominal and posthazard aircraft systems and the invariance of this essential condition is concluded under realistic failure and damage conditions. The multivariable model reference adaptive control scheme is developed to ensure stability and asymptotic output tracking for the aircraft in the presence of uncertain actuator failures and structural damage. The developed fault-tolerant control design is evaluated by a high-fidelity nonlinear aircraft model–the NASA generic transport model.

The discovery of mutated palynomorphs in end-Permian rocks led to the hypothesis that the eruption of the Siberian Traps through older organic-rich sediments synthesized and released massive quantities of organohalogens, which caused widespread O 3 depletion and allowed increased terrestrial incidence of harmful ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280–315 nm; Visscher et al . 2004 Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA 101 , 12 952–12 956). Here, we use an extended version of the Cambridge two-dimensional chemistry–transport model to evaluate quantitatively this possibility along with two other potential causes of O 3 loss at this time: (i) direct effects of HCl release by the Siberian Traps and (ii) the indirect release of organohalogens from dispersed organic matter. According to our simulations, CH 3 Cl released from the heating of coals alone caused comparatively minor O 3 depletion (5–20% maximum) because this mechanism fails to deliver sufficiently large amounts of Cl into the stratosphere. The unusual explosive nature of the Siberian Traps, combined with the direct release of large quantities of HCl, depleted the model O 3 layer in the high northern latitudes by 33–55%, given a main eruptive phase of less than or equal to 200 kyr. Nevertheless, O 3 depletion was most extensive when HCl release from the Siberian Traps was combined with massive CH 3 Cl release synthesized from a large reservoir of dispersed organic matter in Siberian rocks. This suite of model experiments produced column O 3 depletion of 70–85% and 55–80% in the high northern and southern latitudes, respectively, given eruption durations of 100–200 kyr. On longer eruption time scales of 400–600 kyr, corresponding O 3 depletion was 30–40% and 20–30%, respectively. Calculated year-round increases in total near-surface biologically effective (BE) UV-B radiation following these reductions in O 3 layer range from 30–60 (kJ m −2  d −1 ) BE up to 50–100 (kJ m −2  d −1 ) BE . These ranges of daily UV-B doses appear sufficient to exert mutagenic effects on plants, especially if sustained over tens of thousands of years, unlike either rising temperatures or SO 2 concentrations.

Abstract In the industrial simulation of flow phenomena, turbulence modeling is of prime importance. Due to their low computational cost, Reynolds-averaged methods (RANS) are predominantly used for this purpose. However, eddy viscosity RANS models are often unable to adequately capture important flow physics, specifically when strongly anisotropic turbulence and vortex structures are present. In such cases the more costly 7-equation Reynolds stress models often lead to significantly better results. Unfortunately, these models are not widely used in the industry. The reason for this is not mainly the increased computational cost, but the stability and convergence issues such models usually exhibit. In this paper we present a robust implementation of a Reynolds stress model that is solved in a coupled manner, increasing stability and convergence speed significantly compared to segregated implementations. In addition, the decoupling of the velocity and Reynolds stress fields is addressed for the coupled equation formulation. A special wall function is presented that conserves the anisotropic properties of the model near the walls on coarser meshes. The presented Reynolds stress model is validated on a series of semi-academic test cases and then applied to two industrially relevant situations, namely the tip vortex of a NACA0012 profile and the Aachen Radiver radial compressor case.

Permanent magnet synchronous motor systems are usually used in industry. This kind of systems is nonlinear in nature and generally difficult to control. The ordinary linear constant gain controller will cause overshoot or even loss of system stability. Application of adaptive controller to a permanent magnet synchronous motor system is investigated in this paper. The dynamic model of the system is given and the stability is also analyzed using Popov's criterion. The steady state error can be eliminated using adaptive controller combined with an integration term. Simulation results show the performance of adaptive controller with fast response and less overshoot.

In the literature, modal kinetic energy (MKE) has been commonly utilized for optimal sensor placement strategies. However, there have been very few studies on its application to structural damage detection. This paper introduces a new two-stage structural damage assessment method by combining the modal kinetic energy change ratio (MKECR) and symbiotic organisms search (SOS) algorithm. In the first stage, an efficient damage indicator, named MKECR, is used to locate the potential damaged sites. Meanwhile, for the purpose of comparison with MKECR, three other indices are also used. In the second stage, an SOS-based finite element (FE) model updating strategy is adopted to estimate the damage magnitude of identified sites, while excluding false warnings (if any), where an objective function is proposed using a combination of the flexibility matrix and modal assurance criterion (MAC). The performance of the SOS algorithm is also verified by comparing with four other meta-heuristic algorithms. Finally, three numerical examples of 2D truss and frame structures with various hypothetical damage scenarios are carried out to investigate the capability of the proposed method. The numerical results indicate that the proposed method not only can accurately locate and quantify single- and multi-damage in the structures, but also shows a great saving in computational cost.

The instability of polymeric membranes with nano- and micro-sized apertures has been regarded as one of the main reasons behind realizing ultra-thin membranes with apertures. As is well known, when the thickness of the membrane gets thinner or the aperture size gets smaller, the possibility of geometrical deformation or structural damage by collapse or fracture increases. Herein, we suggest the design rules for the stability of polymeric membranes possessing 1D nano-line patterns monolithically constructed on micro-aperture supporting layers. The proposed theoretical model, which has been thoroughly demonstrated and analyzed based on both theoretical and experimental approaches, provides stability criteria for lateral collapse and vertical fracture of ultra-thin membranes with apertures.

With the objective of reducing the computational cost of the iterative processes of aerodynamic components design, tests were carried out to study under what conditions, and with what difference, only part of the calculation domain can be solved using as input information obtained from complete simulations already solved. An experimental study of an airfoil exposed to the wake interference of an upstream airfoil at a Reynolds number of 150,000 was used to verify the solutions of the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations solved applying the k-ω Shear Stress Transport model for turbulence closure. A Grid Convergence Index study was performed to verify if the solution of the equations for the adopted discretization leads to results within the asymptotic range. With the physical coherence of the numerical methodology verified, comparisons between the simulations with the domain comprising the two airfoils and the domain comprising only the downstream airfoil were performed. Computational time reductions in the order of 40% are observed. The differences in the aerodynamic coefficients for the two types of simulation are presented as a function of distances non-dimensionalized by the characteristic length of the body that disturbs the flow forming the wake, showing that the difference between the two methods was inversely proportional to the distance between the two bodies. Behavior that was maintained until a point where the simulation diverges, equivalent to 25% of the characteristic length of the body that generates the wake.
