We measure the far-infrared spectrum of N,N-Dimethyl-N-ethyl-N-benzylammonium (DEBA) bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) ionic liquid (IL) in the temperature range between 160 and 307 K. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements indicate that such IL undergoes a glass transition around 210 K. DFT calculations allow us to assign all the experimental absorptions to specific vibrations of the DEBA cation or of the two conformers of the TFSI anion. We find that the vibration frequencies calculated by means of the PBE0 functional are in better agreement with the experimental ones than those calculated at the B3LYP level, largely used for the attribution of vibration lines of ionic liquids. Experimentally we show that, in the liquid state, the relative concentrations of the two conformers of TFSI depend on temperature through the Boltzmann factor and the energy separation,ΔH, is found to be≈2 kJ/mol, in agreement with previous calculations and literature. However, in the glassy state, the concentrations of the cis-TFSI and trans-TFSI remain fixed, witnessing the frozen state of this phase.

AbstractThe paper deals with the study of seven selected natural plant oils. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermally stimulated discharge (TSD) methods were used. It has been found that most of the oils tested are in a glassy state at low temperature and have multiple transitions in the low temperature range. DSC shows complex melting-like processes or glass transition. For both DMA and TSD, the scaffold supportive method was used and found as a suitable one. DMA and TSD proved more sensitive than DSC and revealed at least two transitions between − 120 and − 40 °C. In the case of three oils (argan, avocado and sunflower), current reversal was observed by TSD; this symptom cannot be fully explained at the moment.

In this work, two new redox-active ionic liquids, one based on 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxide and the other based on 4,4′-bipyridine, are synthesized and characterized. A ferrocene-based redox-active ionic liquid is used for referencing the results. All ionic liquids are formed via salt-metathesis from halogenate to bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. Their fundamental thermal characteristics are assessed with differential scanning calorimetry. While the imidazolium ionic liquids show no melting point, the phase transition is well observable for the viologen-based ionic liquid. The properties of the neat redox-active ionic liquids and of binary mixtures containing these ionic liquids (0.1 m) and 1-butyl-1-methyl pyrrolidinium-bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide have been investigated. Finally, the use of these binary mixtures in combination with activated carbon-based electrodes has been considered in view of the use of these redox-active electrolytes in supercapacitors.

The facile synthesis of two new Ionic electroconductive polyurethanes with the framework of ionic liquids, i.e., PUR-T: synthesized with isocyanate TDI; PUR-H: synthesized with isocyanate HDL, are described. Their structures and properties were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the surface resistance meter. The effects of the different kinds of isocyanate on electrical conductivity of PUR were also investigated. It was found that their electrical conductivity can be optimized by changing the reaction temperature. The PUR-H, which exhibits an electrical conductivity of 1.0×104 Ω surface resistance, could be obtained in high yield, up to 65% at 90 oC for 12h.

AbstractIonic liquid [bmim]PF6 (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluoro phosphate) was synthesized and characterized. It was used as the plasticizer for poly(L-lactide) (PLLA). The glass transition temperature (Tg) and the thermal stability of the plasticized PLLA samples were measured by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Compared with poly(ethylene glycol) having Mw of 300 g/mol (PEG300), TG results showed that the thermal stability of PLLA plasticized with ionic liquid was better than that of PLLA plasticized with PEG300. The Tg of plasticized PLLA decrease with increasing the content of ionic liquid [bmim]PF6 from 2 wt.% to 10 wt.%. The Tg of PLLA can be reduced to 40°C when the content of ionic liquid [bmim]PF6 was 10 wt.%. The materials of PLLA with plasticizer were also investigated using polarizing microscope (POM), the results of which indicate that the movements of PLLA chains were improved when ionic liquid plasticizer was used.

The existence of a glassy state in isolated tomato fruit cuticles was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry. Tomato fruit cuticular membranes showed a glass transition temperature at -30 °C and an additional second order transition temperature near 30 °C. Changes in these temperatures during fruit growth were also studied
