A dual-motor coupling-propulsion electric bus (DMCPEB) is modeled, and its optimal control strategy is studied in this paper. The necessary dynamic features of energy loss for subsystems is modeled. Dynamic programming (DP) technique is applied to find the optimal control strategy including upshift threshold, downshift threshold, and power split ratio between the main motor and auxiliary motor. Improved control rules are extracted from the DP-based control solution, forming near-optimal control strategies. Simulation results demonstrate that a significant improvement in reducing energy loss due to the dual-motor coupling-propulsion system (DMCPS) running is realized without increasing the frequency of the mode switch.

A heavy-duty parallel hybrid electric truck is modeled, and its optimal energy control is studied in this paper. The fundamental architecture of the parallel hybrid electric truck is modeled feed-forwardly, together with necessary dynamic features of subsystem or components. Dynamic programming (DP) technique is adopted to find the optimal control strategy including the gear-shifting sequence and the power split between the engine and the motor subject to a battery SOC-sustaining constraint. Improved control rules are extracted from the DP-based control solution, forming near-optimal control strategies. Simulation results demonstrate that a significant improvement on the fuel economy can be achieved in the heavy-duty vehicle cycle from the natural driving statistics.

This work is aimed at formulating a mathematical model for the control of zika virus infection using Sterile Insect Technology (SIT). The model is extended to incorporate optimal control strategy by introducing three control measures. The optimal control is aimed at minimizing the number of Exposed human, Infected human and the total number of Mosquitoes in a population and as such reducing contacts between mosquitoes and human, human to human and above all, eliminates the population of Mosquitoes. The Pontryagin’s maximum principle was used to obtain the necessary conditions, find the optimality system of our model and to obtain solution to the control problem. Numerical simulations result shows that; reduction in the number of Exposed human population, Infected human population and reduction in the entire population of Mosquito population is best achieved using the optimal control strategy.

Tungiasis is a permanent penetration of female sand flea“Tunga penetrans”into the epidermis of its host. It affects human beings and domestic and sylvatic animals. In this paper, we apply optimal control techniques to a Tungiasis controlled mathematical model to determine the optimal control strategy in order to minimize the number of infested humans, infested animals, and sand flea populations. In an attempt to reduce Tungiasis infestation in human population, the control strategies based on personal protection, personal treatment, educational campaign, environmental sanitation, and insecticidal treatments on the affected parts as well as on animal fur are considered. We prove the existence of optimal control problem, determine the necessary conditions for optimality, and then perform numerical simulations. The numerical results showed that the control strategy comprises all five control measures and that which involves the three control measures of insecticide control, insecticidal dusting on animal furs, and environmental hygiene has the significant impact on Tungiasis transmission. Therefore, fighting against Tungiasis infestation in endemic settings, multidimensional control process should be employed in order to achieve the maximum benefits.

In this paper, the dynamic programming algorithm is applied to the control strategy design of parallel hybrid electric vehicles. Based on MATLAB/Simulink software, the key component model and controller model of the parallel hybrid system are established, and an offline simulation platform is built. Based on the platform, the global optimal control strategy based on the dynamic programming algorithm is studied. The torque distribution rules and shifting rules are analyzed, and the optimal control strategy is adopted to design the control strategy, which effectively improves the fuel economy of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The fuel consumption rate of this parallel hybrid electric vehicle is based on china city bus cycle (CCBC) condition.

The aim of this paper is to study and investigate the optimal control strategy of a discrete mathematical model of drug consumption. The population that we are going to study is divided into six compartments: potential drug users, light drug users, heavy drug users, heavy drug users-dealers and providers, temporary quitters of drug consumption, and permanent quitters of drug consumption. Our objective is to find the best strategy to reduce the number of light drug users, heavy drug users, heavy drug users-dealers and providers, and temporary quitters of drug consumption. We use four control strategies which are awareness programs through media and education, preventing contact through security campaigns, treatment, and psychological support along with follow-up. Pontryagin’s maximum principle in discrete time is used to characterize the optimal controls. The numerical simulation is carried out using MATLAB. Consequently, the obtained results confirm the effectiveness of the optimization strategy.

Over the last decade, power generation from renewable energy sources such as wind, hydro and solar energies have substantially increased globally and in South Africa. Of all the renewable energy sources, wind energy appears to be the most promising, considering design and costs. However, due to the intermittent nature of wind, the increased integration of wind energy into existing power systems raises several control challenges related to load frequency control (LFC) and tie-line power system stability. The stability of modern power systems, incorporating wind energy generations, will be significantly enhanced with the development of LFC strategies based on modern control theory, which is the focus of this research. This thesis presents the design, modelling and analysis, of two LFC control strategies for interconnected power systems, having wind power integrations. The first design is an optimal control strategy, based on error minimization through full state vector feedback, for a two-area interconnected power system consisting of hydro-thermal generations. The second design is a model predictive control (MPC) strategy, based output vector feedback of system state parameters, for a two-area interconnected power system consisting of thermal generations in each area. Both designs include the active power support from doubly fed induction generator based wind turbines (DFIG) in conjunction with the combined effort of a thyristor control phase shifter (TCPS) and super conducting magnetic energy storage unit (SMES). Both control strategies were simulated in MATLAB Simulink and positive results were obtained. The results show that the optimal control strategy is enhanced with power integrations using DFIG based wind turbines combined with the TCPS-SMES units and the MPC strategy is very robust and provides better dynamic performances even with parameter variations and generation rate restrictions.
