Tsunami generation and propagation caused by stochastic seismic fault driven by two Gaussian white noises in the x- and y-directions are investigated. This model is used to study the tsunami amplitude amplification under the effect of the noise intensities, spreading uplift length and rise times of the three-dimensional stochastic fault source model. Tsunami waveforms within the frame of the linearized shallow-water theory for constant water depth are analyzed analytically by transform methods (Laplace in time and Fourier in space). The amplification of tsunami amplitudes builds up progressively as time increases during the generation process due to wave focusing while the maximum wave amplitude decreases with time during the propagation process due to the geometric spreading and also due to dispersion. The maximum amplitude amplification is proportional to the propagation length of the stochastic source model and inversely proportional to the water depth. The increase of the normalized noise intensities on the bottom topography leads to an increase in oscillations and amplitude in the free surface elevation. We derived and analyzed the mean and variance of the random tsunami waves as a function of the propagated uplift length, noise intensities, and the average depth of the ocean along the generation and propagation path.

Collecting in shallow water (water depth: ~30 m) is an emerging field that requires robotics for replacing human divers. Soft robots have several promising features (e.g., safe interaction with the environments, lightweight, etc.) for performing such tasks. In this article, we developed an underwater robotic system with a three-degree-of-freedom (3-DoF) soft manipulator for spatial delicate grasping in shallow water. First, we present the design and fabrication of the soft manipulator with an opposite-bending-and-stretching structure (OBSS). Then, we proposed a simple and efficient kinematics method for controlling the spatial location and trajectory of the soft manipulator’s end effector. The inverse kinematics of the OBSS manipulator can be solved efficiently (computation time: 8.2 ms). According to this inverse kinematics method, we demonstrated that the OBSS soft manipulator could track complex two-dimensional and three-dimensional trajectories, including star, helix, etc. Further, we performed real-time closed-loop pick-and-place experiments of the manipulator with binocular and on-hand cameras in a lab aquarium. Hydrodynamic experiments showed that the OBSS soft manipulator produced little force (less than 0.459 N) and torque (less than 0.228 N·m), which suggested its low-inertia feature during the underwater operation. Finally, we demonstrated that the underwater robotic system with the OBSS soft manipulator successfully collected seafood animals at the bottom of the natural oceanic environment. The robot successfully collected eight sea echini and one sea cucumber within 20 minutes at a water depth of around 10 m.

The attenuation of fan tones remains an important aspect of fan noise reduction for high bypass ratio turbofan engines. However, as fan design considerations have evolved, the simultaneous reduction of broadband fan noise levels has gained interest. Advanced manufacturing techniques have also opened new possibilities for the practical implementation of broadband liner concepts. To effectively address these elements, practical acoustic liner design methodologies must provide the capability to efficiently predict the acoustic benefits of novel liner configurations. This paper describes such a methodology to design and evaluate multiple candidate liner configurations using realistic, three dimensional geometries for which minimal source information is available. The development of the design methodology has been guided by a series of studies culminating in the design and flight test of a low drag, broadband inlet liner. The excellent component and system noise benefits obtained in this test demonstrate the effectiveness of the broadband liner design process. They also illustrate the value of the approach in concurrently evaluating multiple liner designs and their application to various locations within the aircraft engine nacelle. Thus, the design methodology may be utilized with increased confidence to investigate novel liner configurations in future design studies.

The efficiency of a fishway is determined by the ability of immigrating fish to follow its attraction flow (i.e., its jet) to locate and enter the fishway entrance. The hydraulic characteristics of fishway entrance jets can be simplified using findings from widely investigated surface jets produced by shaped nozzles. However, the effect of the different boundary conditions of fishway entrance jets (characterized by vertical entrance slots) compared to nozzle jets must be considered. We investigate the downstream propagation of attraction jets from the vertical slot of a fishway entrance into a quiescent tailrace, considering the following boundary conditions not considered for nozzle jets: (1) slot geometry, (2) turbulence characteristics of the approach flow to the slot, and (3) presence of a lateral wall downstream of the slot. We quantify the effect of these boundary conditions using three-dimensional hydrodynamic-numeric flow simulations with DES and RANS turbulence models and a volume-of-fluid method (VoF) to simulate the free water surface. In addition, we compare jet propagation with existing analytical methods for describing jet propagations from nozzles. We show that a turbulent and inhomogeneous approach flow towards a vertical slot reduces the propagation length of the slot jet in the tailrace due to increased lateral spreading compared to that of a jet produced by a shaped nozzle. An additional lateral wall in the tailrace reduces lateral spreading and significantly increases the propagation length. For highly turbulent flows at fishway entrances, the RANS model tends to overestimate the jet propagation compared to the transient DES model.

A quasi-three-dimensional hydrodynamic model is presented to simulate shallow water phenomena. The method is based on a finite-volume approach designed to solve shallow water equations in the time domain. The nonlinearities of the governing equations are considered. The methodology can be used to compute green water effects on a variety of platforms with six-degrees-of-freedom motions. Different boundary and initial conditions can be applied for multiple types of moving platforms, like a ship's deck, tanks, etc. Comparisons with experimental data are discussed. The shallow water model has been integrated with the Large Amplitude Motions Program to compute the effects of green water flow over decks within a time-domain simulation of ship motions in waves. Results associated to this implementation are presented.

В статье рассматривается определение коэффициентов демпфирования и присоединенных масс, возникающих при совместной качке двух судов в условиях мелководья параллельно вертикальной стенке на основании решения трехмерной потенциальной задачи. Определение гидродинамических коэффициентов осуществляется на основании методов интегральных уравнений и зеркальных отображений. Представленное решение в отечественной практике является новым. В статье приводятся результаты расчетов коэффициентов присоединенных масс и демпфирования, возникающих при качке двух одинаковых судов, расположенных лагом к волнению и параллельно вертикальной стенке в зависимости от изменения расстояний как между судами, так и между судами и вертикальной стенкой. Проводится исследование влияния различных фарватеров на величины гидродинамических коэффициентов, а именно: мелководного фарватера, мелководного фарватера с вертикальной стенкой, мелководного фарватера со вторым параллельно качающимся судном и мелководного фарватера с вертикальной стенкой и вторым судном. Таким образом, в работе учитывается одновременное влияния мелководья, вертикальной стенки и второго судна. Показано увеличение значений коэффициентов присоединенных масс и демпфирования при уменьшении расстояний между судами и между судами и вертикальной стенкой. Также показано значительное совместное влияние вертикальной стенки и второго судна на коэффициенты присоединенных масс и демпфирования по сравнению с другими видами стесненных фарватеров. The article discusses the determination of damping coefficients and added masses arising from the joint motions of two ships in shallow water conditions parallel to the vertical wall based on the solution of a three-dimensional potential problem. Determination of hydrodynamic coefficients is carried out on the basis of the methods of integral equations and mirror images. The solution presented in the national practice is new The article presents the results of calculating the coefficients of added masses and damping arising from the motions of two identical ships located lagged to the sea and parallel to the vertical wall, depending on the change in the distances between the ships and between the ships and the vertical wall. A study is being made of the influence of various waterways on the values ​​of hydrodynamic coefficients, namely: a shallow waterway, a shallow waterway with a vertical wall, a shallow waterway with a second parallel oscillating ship and a shallow waterway with a vertical wall and a second ship. Thus, the work takes into account the simultaneous influence of shallow water, vertical wall and the second ship. An increase in the values of the coefficients of added masses and damping with a decrease in the distances between ships and between ships and the vertical wall is shown. It also shows a significant combined effect of the vertical wall and the second ship on the added mass and damping coefficients in comparison with other types of constrained waterways.

Abstract Articulated pusher barge vessel is a short-distance transport vessel with good economic performance and practicability, which is widely used in the Yangtze River of China. In this present work, the resistance performance of articulated pusher barge vessel in deep water and shallow water was studied by model tests in the towing tank and basin of Shanghai Ship and Shipping Research Institute. During the experimental investigation, the articulated pusher barge vessel was divided into three parts: the pusher, the barge and the articulated pusher barge system. Firstly, the deep water resistance performance of the articulated pusher barge system, barge and the pusher at design draught T was studied, then the water depth h was adjusted, and the shallow water resistance at h/T = 2.0, 1.5 and 1.2 was tested and studied respectively, and the difference between deep water resistance and shallow water resistance at design draught were compared. The results of model tests and analysis show that: 1) in the study of deep water resistance, the total resistance of the barge was larger than that of the articulated pusher barge system. 2) for the barge, the shallow water resistance increases about 0.4–0.7 times at h/T = 2.0, 0.5–1.1 times at h/T = 1.5, and 0.7–2.3 times at h/T = 1.2. 3) for the pusher, the shallow water resistance increases about 1.0–0.4 times at h/T = 2.7, 1.2–0.9 times at h/T = 2.0, and 1.7–2.4 times at h/T = 1.6. 4) for the articulated pusher barge system, the shallow water resistance increases about 0.2–0.3 times at h/T = 2.0, 0.5–1.3 times at h/T = 1.5, and 1.0–3.5 times at h/T = 1.2. Furthermore, the water depth Froude number Frh in shallow water was compared with the changing trend of resistance in shallow water.

The worldwide demand for energy, and in particular fossil fuels, keeps pushing the boundaries of offshoreengineering. Oil and gas majors are conducting their exploration and production activities in remotelocations and water depths exceeding 3000 meters. Such challenging conditions call for enhancedengineering techniques to cope with the risks of collapse, fatigue and pressure containment.On the other hand, offshore structures in shallow water depth (up to 100 meter) require a different anddedicated approach. Such structures are less prone to unstable collapse, but are often subjected to higherflow velocities, induced by both tides and waves. In this paper, numerical tools and utilities to study thestability of offshore structures in shallow water depth are reviewed, and three case studies are provided.First, the Coupled Eulerian Lagrangian (CEL) approach is demonstrated to combine the effects of fluid flowon the structural response of offshore structures. This approach is used to predict fluid flow aroundsubmersible platforms and jack-up rigs.Then, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis is performed to calculate the turbulent Von Karmanstreet in the wake of subsea structures. At higher Reynolds numbers, this turbulent flow can give rise tovortex shedding and hence cyclic loading. Fluid structure interaction is applied to investigate the dynamicsof submarine risers, and evaluate the susceptibility of vortex induced vibrations.As a third case study, a hydrodynamic analysis is conducted to assess the combined effects of steadycurrent and oscillatory wave-induced flow on submerged structures. At the end of this paper, such ananalysis is performed to calculate drag, lift and inertia forces on partially buried subsea pipelines.
