Ultrawideband (UWB) antennas are of huge demand and Vivaldi antennas as well as the TEM horn antennas are good candidates for UWB applications as they both have relatively simple geometry and high gain over a wide bandwidth. The aim of this study is to design a compact antenna that achieves maximum gain over a bandwidth between 1.5 and 10.6 GHz while minimizing its size. The idea is to make use of combined respective advantages of Vivaldi and TEM horn antennas to achieve the desired goals by shaping the TEM horn antenna to look like a Vivaldi antenna. The antenna structure is modified by a dielectric load in the center to increase the gain bandwidth. It is placed in a surrounding box made of PEC material to reduce the undesired side lobes and to obtain more directive radiation pattern. The simulations are performed by using the CST STUDIO SUITE electromagnetic (EM) simulation software and they are later verified by the actual measurements. The Vivaldi shaped partially dielectric loaded (VS-PDL) TEM horn antenna is proposed as a compact UWB antenna for systems using the newly established UWB band and also for the communication systems of popular bands like ISM, Wi-Fi, and GSM.

The limitation of the electromagnetic interferences (EMIs) caused by UWB radiating sources into WLAN/WiMAX communication systems operating in the frequency band located around 5.5 GHz requires the adoption of appropriate design features. To this purpose, a notch filter integrated into an UWB antenna, which is able to ensure a better electrical insulation between the two mentioned communication systems with respect to that already presented by the authors Moeikham et al. (2011), is proposed in this paper. The proposed filter, consisting in a rectangular slot including a quarter-wavelength strip integrated on the lower inner edge of the UWB radiating patch, is capable of reducing the energy emission in the frequency range between 5.1 and 5.75 GHz resulting in lower EMIs with sensible electronic equipments working in this frequency band. The antenna structure has no need to be tuned after inserting the rectangle slot with a quarter-wavelength strip. The proposed antenna has potential to minimize the EMIs at a frequency range from 5.1 to 5.75 GHz. The radiation patterns are given nearly omnidirectional in plane and likely bidirectional in plane at all frequencies by the proposed antenna. Therefore, this antenna is suitable to apply for various UWB applications.

In order to achieve wide bandwidth and high gain, we propose a stacked antenna structure having a microstrip aperture coupled feeding technique with a mounted Horn integrated on it. With optimized parameters, the single antenna element at a center frequency of 60 GHz, exhibits a wide impedance bandwidth of about 10.58% (58.9–65.25 GHz) with a gain and efficiency of 11.78 dB and 88%, respectively. For improving the gain, we designed a 2 × 2 and 4 × 4 arrays with a corporate feed network. The side lobe levels were minimized and the back radiations were reduced by making use of a reflector atλ/4distance from the corporate feed network. The2×2array structure resulted in improved gain of 15.3 dB with efficiency of 83%, while the4×4array structure provided further gain improvement of 18.07 dB with 68.3% efficiency. The proposed design is modelled in CST Microwave Studio. The results are verified using HFSS, which are found to be in good agreement.

A novel ultra-wideband (UWB) TEM horn antenna fed by a microstrip-type transition is designed. The feeding structure is directly realized by a microstrip line with the merit of compact size and UWB. To broaden the low frequency band, an arc surface is added at the end of the flare plates. Numerical simulation is applied to discuss the effect of the geometry construction which contains the microstrip-type transition and the circular arc surface at the end of radiating arm. Return loss, radiation pattern, and gain of the fabricated antennas are measured. The measured results show that the antenna yields a wide bandwidth ranging from 1 GHZ to 10.3 GHz with return loss less than −10 dB. The antenna also achieves unidirectional radiation patterns with stable antenna gain. These characteristics imply that the compact antenna may be used for detecting buried objects in the wall or UWB communication systems of band like GSM, Wi-Fi, and so forth.

Background & Objective: The circular slotted monopole microstrip antenna with Coplanar Waveguide (CPW) feed for unified GSM and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) applications have been presented in this article. Circular shaped slots have been embedded in the radiating patch. Less surface area has been found due to slots etching and the overall antenna size is reduced by 45%. Result: The proposed antenna demonstrates a double band operation wrapping 883.6-1206 MHz (GSM band) and 2.75-18.30 GHz (UWB, X, and Ku) frequency band with VSWR of less than 2 and fractional B. W. of 30.8 % and 147% respectively. The pattern of radiation presented by the antenna is nearly omnidirectional in H-plane and directional in E-plane within the GSM and UWB band. Conclusion: There is a variety of applications nowadays using these UWB antennas such as modern civil and military applications, wireless and radar communications, etc. Measured results are presented to validate the proposed antenna structure, which shows that the proposed designed antenna structure has a stable radiation pattern both at the GSM and UWB band ranges.

Resonant cavity antennas (RCAs) are suitable candidates to achieve high-directivity with a low-cost and easy fabrication process. The stable functionality of the RCAs over different frequency bands, as well as, their pattern reconfigurability make them an attractive antenna structure for the next generation wireless communication systems, i.e., fifth generation (5G). The variety of designs and analytical techniques regarding the main radiator and partially reflective surface (PRS) configurations allow dramatic progress and advances in the area of RCAs. Adding different functionalities in a single structure by using additional layers is another appealing feature of the RCA structures, which has opened the various fields of studies toward 5G applications. This paper reviews the recent advances on the RCAs along with the analytical methods, and various capabilities that make them suitable to be used in 5G communication systems. To discuss different capabilities of RCA structures, some applicable fields of studies are followed in different sections of this paper. To indicate different techniques in achieving various capabilities, some recent state-of-the-art designs are demonstrated and investigated. Since wideband high-gain antennas with different functionalities are highly required for the next generation of wireless communication, the main focus of this paper is to discuss primarily the antenna gain and bandwidth. Finally, a brief conclusion is drawn to have a quick overview of the content of this paper.

A miniaturized high-gain (MHG) ultra-wideband (UWB) unidirectional monopole antenna with defected ground structure (DGS) is designed for ultra-wideband applications. The MHG antenna is printed on the FR4 substrate material with an overall size of 26.6-mm [Formula: see text] 29.3-mm [Formula: see text] 1.6-mm, which operates over the UWB frequency range and achieves the bandwidth between 3.1[Formula: see text]GHz and 10.6[Formula: see text]GHz. This high-gain unidirectional antenna exhibits a peak gain of 7.20[Formula: see text]dB with an efficiency of 95%. The compact antenna is a simple overlay design of circular and rectangular patches with the partial ground plane exhibiting high gain and better directivity. The overlay patch antenna acts as the radiator for wider bandwidth compared to the fundamental design of patch antenna and is matched to an SMA connector via 50[Formula: see text][Formula: see text] microstrip feed line. These simulated results are presented using HFSS software package. The designed antennas are fabricated and validated by using Agilent Vector Analyzer.

The idea of this paper roots in the electromagnetic compatibility design of the whole aircraft system, in which out of band characteristics of airborne antennas are of equal importance as their characteristics in band. The definition of antenna characteristics for out of band is interpreted. Horn antennas are the main research objects in this paper. In order to make characteristic of this type antenna for out of band have a general, this paper is special to select pyramidal horn antenna and conical horn antenna. The characterization framework of horn antennas radiation characteristics for out of band is established, and the theoretical expressions of their radiation characteristics for out of band are given. In ensuring better antenna characteristics in band, four horn antennas that are different types of sizes, different frequency band width are simulated and analyzed by using electromagnetic simulation software HFSS. It is meaningful to analyze radiation characteristics and summarize different features for various performance parameters of these horn antennas for in band and out of band. Focus on characteristics of the changes for the maximum gain, 3dB beam width parameters of horn antennas within the working frequency band and out of working band. The results show that: radiation characteristics of horn antenna are the law within the working frequency band and out of working band.

This study proposes an array synthesis horn antenna with an extended horn and a stepped corrugated structure for a high-power microwave system. The horn antenna is designed by joining four pyramidal horn antennas and an extended horn to obtain a high gain. To improve the beam pattern in the H-plane, the length of the vertical junction of the pyramidal horns is controlled. Two-stepped and partitioned corrugated structures are attached to both horizontal edges of the aperture for a good front-to-back ratio. The designed 2 × 2 array synthesis horn antenna has a gain of 19.7 dBi and front-to-back ratio of 39.6 dB in the measurement.

In satellite communication systems the horn antennas are being used widely due to its robustness and capable to operate at frequencies which are very high. Here, the right hand circular polarized conical horn antenna is designed for S-band NavIC receiver. The waveguides and conical horn antenna dimensions are designed by using standard formulas and after that they are given to a simulation tool for the S band frequency. The performance parameters like return loss, radiation pattern, gain and directivity are considered for further analysis. In the circular waveguide from the TE11 mode conical horn antenna is to be designed into high gain and a good VSWR.
