We shall explore a nonlinear discrete dynamical system that naturally occurs in population systems to describe a transmission of a trait from parents to their offspring. We consider a Mendelian inheritance for a single gene with three alleles and assume that to form a new generation, each gene has a possibility to mutate, that is, to change into a gene of the other kind. We investigate the derived models and observe chaotic behaviors of such models.

This paper studies the dynamic characteristics of triopoly models that are constructed based on a 3-dimensional Cobb–Douglas utility function. The paper presents two parts. The first part introduces a competition among three rational firms on which their prices are isoelastic functions. The competition is described by a 3-dimensional discrete dynamical system. We examine the impact of rationality on the system’s steady state point. Studying the stability/instability of this point, which is Nash equilibrium and is unique in those models, is illustrated. Numerically, we give some global analysis of Nash point and its stability. The second part deals with heterogeneous scenarios. It consists of two different models. In the first model, we assume that one competitor adopts the local monopolistic approximation mechanism (LMA) while the other opponents are rational. The second model assumes two heterogeneous players with LMA mechanism against one rational firm. Studies show that the stability of NE point of those models is not guaranteed. Furthermore, simulation shows that when firms behave rational with symmetric costs, the stability of NE point is achievable.

Abstract Strong deviation of allele frequencies from Mendelian inheritance favoring Mus spretus-derived alleles has been described previously for X-linked loci in four mouse interspecific crosses. We reanalyzed data for three of these crosses focusing on the location of the gene(s) controlling deviation on the X chromosome and the genetic basis for incomplete deviation. At least two loci control deviation on the X chromosome, one near Xist (the candidate gene controlling X inactivation) and the other more centromerically located. In all three crosses, strong epistasis was found between loci near Xist and marker loci on the central portion of chromosome 2. The mechanism for this deviation from Mendelian expectations is not yet known but it is probably based on lethality of embryos carrying particular combinations of alleles rather than true segregation distortion during oogenesis in F1 hybrid females.

This paper studies the hyperchaotic Rössler system and the state observation problem of such a system being investigated. Based on the time-domain approach, a simple observer for the hyperchaotic Rössler system is proposed to guarantee the global exponential stability of the resulting error system. The scheme is easy to implement and different from the other observer design that it does not need to transmit all signals of the dynamical system. It is proved theoretically, and numerical simulations show the effectiveness of the scheme finally.

Abstract The allele for black coat colour is dominant relative to the allele for lilac in Jacob sheep and is affected by a single gene locus. The percentage of this colouration, as opposed to white fleece, across the body has a heritability value of 0.255. The mode of inheritance for horn number in these animals is less clear, with neither the trait for 2 horns, nor for 4 horns being totally dominant, based on crosses of 2 x 2-horned parents and 4 x 4-horned parents; although in these examples the majority of lambs had the same number of horns as their parents. However, when one parent had 2 horns and the other had 4 horns, the gender of the 4-horned parent appeared to influence the frequency of 4-horned offspring; 77% of lambs born to a 4-horned dam being 4-horned, but only 50% when the 4-horned parent was the sire. These data suggest evidence for sex-limiting factors being involved in determining the number of horns in this breed.

Nakajima (2003) introduced a $t$-deformation of $q$-characters, $(q,t)$-characters for short, and their twisted multiplication through the geometry of quiver varieties. The Nakajima $(q,t)$-characters of Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules satisfy a $t$-deformed $T$-system. The $T$-system is a discrete dynamical system that can be interpreted as a mutation relation in a cluster algebra in two different ways, depending on the choice of direction of evolution. In this paper, we show that the Nakajima $t$-deformed $T$-system of type $A_r$ forms a quantum mutation relation in a quantization of exactly one of the cluster algebra structures attached to the $T$-system.

Abstract Folded surfaces of origami tessellations have attracted much attention because they sometimes exhibit non-trivial behaviors. It is known that cylindrical folded surfaces of waterbomb tessellation called waterbomb tube can transform into wave-like surfaces, which is a unique phenomenon not observed on other tessellations. However, the theoretical reason why wave-like surfaces arise has been unclear. In this paper, we provide a kinematic model of waterbomb tube by parameterizing the geometry of a module of waterbomb tessellation and derive a recurrence relation between the modules. Through the visualization of the configurations of waterbomb tubes under the proposed kinematic model, we classify solutions into three classes: cylinder solution, wave-like solution, and finite solution. Furthermore, we give proof of the existence of a wave-like solution around one of the cylinder solutions by applying the knowledge of the discrete dynamical system to the recurrence relation.

This introductory chapter provides an overview of House of Usher (1960), which was a part of American International Pictures' TV series The Curse of Corman. This TV series introduced American International's Poe pictures to a new generation. It is the emotional intensity conveyed through the mise-en-scène that sets the Poe pictures apart from their immediate rivals. The Poe pictures appealed to AIP's target audience — teenagers — because their aesthetics were also akin to the look and feel of EC horror comics. More than any of the other Poe pictures, House of Usher is a work of pulp expressionism that appeals to the angst holed up inside the minds of many a teenage audience member. Like a magic lantern, the film projector reveals a series of beautifully crafted, colourful tableau that in sequence give expression to Edgar Allan Poe's vision of human frailty and corruption, and the void that awaits beyond the threshold of life. This book explains why House of Usher has attracted a cult audience for nearly 60 years.
