Okra is consumed as a vegetable by populations in Africa and Asia and particularly in Egypt. In this study, we investigated some nutritional components of okra grown in four different geographical locations of Egypt. A comparative analysis of water-soluble vitamins (B2, B3, B6, B12, and C) and fat-soluble vitamins (E, K, D, A, andβ-carotene) in okra pods was carried out. Results of principal component analysis (PCA) showed three clusters of varieties. The first cluster included the Dakahlia (D) and Kafr El-Sheikh (K) varieties. The second and the third clusters separated out the Suez (S) and Mansoura (M) varieties independently. The S pod showed the highest contents of vitamins B6 (49.81 μg/100 g) and E (1.47 mg/100 g) but contained the lowest contents of vitamins B3 (1.42 μg/100 g) and B12 (undetected). The K pod showed the lowest vitamin C content (11.60 mg/100 g). The M pod showed the highest contents of vitamins B3 (22.70 μg/100 g), B12 (91.20 μg/100 g), C (27.14 mg/100 g), and K (0.21 mg/100 g). The D pod showed the lowest contents of vitamins E (0.15 mg/100 g), K (0.05 mg/100 g), and B6 (11.50 μg/100 g). These findings could help develop meal planning at the community level by incorporating okra varieties with high vitamin content.

Atmospheric particulate matters (PMs) were measured in an industry-intensive region in central Taiwan in order to investigate the characteristics and possible sources of PMs. The samplings were simultaneously conducted using a 10- and 3-stage Micro Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI) from 2017 to 2018. In this study, the characteristics of PMs in this region were evaluated by measuring the mass concentration of PMs and analyzing water-soluble ions and metallic elements, as well as dioxins. Additionally, principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify the potential sources of PMs. The results showed that the mean concentration of coarse (>1.8 μm), fine (0.1–1.8 μm), and ultrafine (<0.1 μm) particles were 13.60, 14.38, and 3.44 μg/m3, respectively. In the industry-intensive region, the size distribution of ambient particles showed a bi-modal distribution with a high concentration of coarse particles in the spring and summer, while fine particles were dominant in the autumn and winter. The most abundant water-soluble ions of PMs were NO3−, Cl−, and SO42−, while the majority of metallic elements were Na, Fe, Ca, Al, and Mg in different particle sizes. The results of Pearson’s correlation analysis for metals indicated that the particles in the collected air samples were related to the iron and steelmaking industries, coal burning, vehicle exhausts, and high-tech industries. The dioxin concentration ranged from 0.0006 to 0.0017 pg I-TEQ/Nm3. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that the contribution to PMs was associated with sea salt, secondary pollutants, and industrial process.

In the present work Fournier transform infrared (IR) spectroscopy in association with chemometric technique was employed to identify kind of tablet formulations containing paracetamol and/or caffeine as active pharmaceutical ingredients. 13 samples of 5 commercially available brand tablets of different manufacturers and batches were bayed in local pharmacies. IR spectra of samples were recorded in the range 600—4000 cm-1 and subjected to and principal component analysis (PCA) which allowed to clearly identify 5 clusters in the scores plot using the third and the second principal components, corresponding to the brands of tablets. For Paracetamol and Caffeine-sodium benzoate tablets the combination of IR spectroscopy and PCA was able to recognize the manufacturer on the basis of distance between samples in clusters in the PCA scores plot.

Daphne malyana Blecic (Thymeleaceae) is an endemic species of the western part of the Balkan Peninsula, distributed in the mountains, canyons and gorges of N. Montenegro, E. Bosnia and W. Serbia. The comparative morphoanatomic investigations have included four distantly separated populations of the species D. malyana, i.e. two from Serbia, from the ravines of Sokoline and Vranjak on Mt. Tara, and two from Montenegro, in the canyons of the Tara and Piva rivers. Comparative morphoanatomical studies have shown the presence of general adaptive characteristics of a specific, conservative xeromorphic type, slightly differing in each population. Principal component analysis (PCA) and canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) of 20 morphoanatomical characteristics of the leaves and stems have shown a clear distinction between the populations from the river Piva canyon (Montenegro) and those from the Sokoline ravine (Serbia), on one side, and those of Vranjak gorge (Serbia) and of the river Tara canyon (Montenegro) on the other side. It may be assumed that the mild morphological variability of the isolated populations of the Balkan endemic species D. malyana in the canyons and gorges seem to have been affected by the microclimate conditions in their habitats.

The present study aimed to comparatively verify the relation between the hermit crabs and the shells they use in two populations of Loxopagurus loxochelis. Samples were collected monthly from July 2002 to June 2003, at Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba Bay, São Paulo, Brazil. The animals sampled had their sex identified, were weighed and measured; their shells were identified, measured and weighed, and their internal volume determined. To relate the hermit crab's characteristics and the shells' variables, principal component analysis (PCA) and a regression tree were used. According to the PCA analysis, the three gastropod shells most frequently used by L. loxochelis varied in size. The regression tree successfully explained the relationship between the hermit crab's characteristics and the internal volume of the inhabited shell. It can be inferred that the relationship between the morphometry of an individual hermit crab and its shell is not straightforward and it is impossible to explain only on the basis of direct correlations between the body's and the shell's attributes. Several factors (such as the morphometry and the availability of the shell, environmental conditions and inter- and intraspecific competition) interact and seem to be taken into consideration by the hermit crabs when they choose a shell, resulting in the diversified pattern of shell occupancy shown here and elsewhere.

Most urban planning policies are affected by the industrial structure. This paper gave a positive and comparative analysis on the industrial structure transformation ability and transformation direction of the thirty-one provincial level divisions in China by using principal component analysis, based on theories of regional economic development and industrial economics. The results show that Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shandong have strong industrial structure transformation ability and the industrial transformation direction is in the tertiary industry except for Guangdong, Jiangsu and Shandong. The industrial structure transformation ability over the thirty-one regions exhibits a decreasing trend from the eastern coastal area to the west inland. The sequence of industry structure transformation direction is from the first industry to the second and then to the tertiary for China.

Several unsupervised learning topics have been extensively studied with wide applications for decades in the literatures of statistics, signal processing, and machine learning. The topics are mutually related and certain connections have been discussed partly, but still in need of a systematical overview. The article provides a unified perspective via a general framework of independent subspaces, with different topics featured by differences in choosing and combining three ingredients. Moreover, an overview is made via three streams of studies. One consists of those on the widely studied principal component analysis (PCA) and factor analysis (FA), featured by the second order independence. The second consists of studies on a higher order independence featured independent component analysis (ICA), binary FA, and nonGaussian FA. The third is called mixture based learning that combines individual jobs to fulfill a complicated task. Extensive literatures make it impossible to provide a complete review. Instead, we aim at sketching a roadmap for each stream with attentions on those topics missing in the existing surveys and textbooks, and limited to the authors’ knowledge.
