A five-year-old male Labrador was presented to Teaching Veterinary Clinics of GADVASU with a primary complaint of distended abdomen, fever, and anorexia. The dog was found to be dull with elevated rectal temperature (104°F), heart rate (148 per minute), and respiration rate (58 per minute). Blood smear examination and PCR assay revealed that dog was positive forBabesia gibsoni. Elevated bilirubin, alanine amino transferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), total leucocyte count, hypoalbuminaemia, and hypoproteinaemia were haematobiochemical alterations. Radiography and ultrasonography showed ground glass appearance and anechoic area of abdomen, respectively.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the haemato-biochemical alterations in dogs infected with canine babesiosis presented at the College clinics at Anand, Gujarat. Blood was collected with and without anticoagulant from naturally infected dogs, which were found positive for babesiosis by direct blood smear examination. Statistical analysis of affected (n=24) and healthy (n=8) dogs revealed significant decrease in the mean values of haemoglobin, total leucocyte count, packed cell volume, platelets and lymphocytes and significant increase in the mean values of neutrophils and eosinophils indicating anaemia, thrombocytopaenia, neutrophilia, lymphopenia and eosinophilia in infected dogs as compared to healthy ones. Similarly significant increase in the mean values of serum ALP, ALT, AST, globulin and BUN and decrease in albumin and A:G ratio were observed in infected dogs. The results showed significant alterations in haemato-biochemical attributes in dogs affected with canine babesiosis, and suggested need to rule out possibility of canine babesiosis in all anaemic dogs.

Evaluation of blood samples collected from 214 dogs from Ludhiana, Punjab (India) was performed for the presence of Ehrlichia canis using PCR-based assays targeting a portion of the 16S rRNA gene. Of the total samples subjected to routine blood smear examination, the morulae of E. canis were detected in 2.34% samples. Nested PCR assay produced amplicons of expected size (389 bp) specific for E. canis in 41.59% (89/214) of samples. The results of multivariate analysis showed that the prevalence of E. canis was higher in the summer as compared to the winter season (P = 0.031) and in dogs younger than six-month-old as compared to older dogs (P < 0.001), while breed and sex of the host were not significantly associated with the occurrence of the disease.

Background: Helminthiasis is a neglected tropical disease and still remain a health problem in tropical and sub-tropical countries, including Indonesia. According to WHO, approximately 1,5 billion people or 24% of the world’s population, are infected with Soil-Transmitted Helminth (STH). Morbidity is directly related to the intensity of STH infestation. Some of the studies shown a significant correlation between eosinophilia and helminthiasis. Eosinophilia on the blood smear examination may be used as a marker of STH infestation. Purpose: to determine the correlation between Soil-Transmitted Helminthiases and eosinophilia as a predictor of morbidity of STH infestation among Widodaren Plantation Workers in Jember. Methods: This observational analytical study use the Kato-Katz method to determine infestation of STH and its intensity measured by egg count per gram stool (EPG). Blood smear examination stained with Giemsa conduct to determine eosinophil count. Results: Prevalence of STH infestation was 22,7% (15/66). Ascaris lumbricoides infection was 13,6% (9/66) and Hookworm infection was 4,5% (3/66). There is mixed infection between A. lumbricoides and Hookworm, the prevalence was 4,5%% (3/66). All of the infection intensity was light. The prevalence of eosinophilia was 27,2% (18/66). There was a significant correlation between STH infection and eosinophilia (P=0,000) but, there was a very weak correlation between the intensity of STH infection and eosinophilia (r=0,281; p=0,258). Conclusion: The prevalence of STH infection among Widodaren Plantation Workers is 22,7% and predominated by A. lumbriocides. There is a positive correlation between intensity of STH infection and eosinophilia as predictor morbidity of STH infection with very weak power.

Neonatal septicemia is a clinical syndrome of systemic illness accompanied by bacteremia occuring in the first 28 days of life. Neonatal septicemia is one of the major causes of neonatal death in developing countries. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent neonatal mortality and morbidity. The present study includes: 1) usefulness of CRP (C-reactive protein), Total Leucocyte Count, Platelet Count and Blood Culture in early diagnosis of Neonatal Sepsis, 2) significance of serial CRP in diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. 3) the prognostic value of CRP in neonatal sepsis. This is a prospective study done in neonatal ward, Chittagong Medical College Hospital and carried out from January 2008 to January 2011. Sample size was 300. One hundred fifty neonates with suspected sepsis as cases and 150 healthy babies as control were enrolled in this study. Seventy two percent of cases neonates were preterm and low birth weight. Common risk factors for neonatal septicemia which were identified in this study; preterm (72%), low birth weight (72%), premature rupture membrane (60%), chorioamnionitis (26%) and maternal urinary tract infection (16%) . Out of 150 cases of suspected neonatal sepsis total 80.7%% had raised CRP, in initial sample 70.39% were CRP positive and in 2nd sample additional 9.31% case were CRP positive . In control group 91% were CRP negative. CRP was positive in 100% of culture proven sepsis. Sensitivity of CRP was 80.67% and specificity of CRP was 76.44%. Leucocytosis was observed in 7% of cases and leucopenia was found in 11% of cases. In 82 % cases leucocyte count was found normal. In control group, 95% had normal leucocyte count and 5% had leucocytosis but no leucopenia. Sensitivity of leucocyte count was 18% and specificity was 20.68%. Thrombocytopenia was found in 28% of case group. Out of 150 cases only 15.33% yielded growth of organisms in blood culture. Klebsiella was the most common pathogen isolated which was followed by E.coli and Strph. aureus. Sensitivity of blood culture was 15.33% and specificity was 100% Therefore serial CRP can be taken as alternative method for diagnosis of neonatal sepsis specially in developing countries where blood culture is not readily available.J Bangladesh Coll Phys Surg 2014; 32: 61-65

Introduction: Total Leucocyte Count (TLC) is an easily available and commonly performed investigation and studies have reported various degrees of leucocytosis in patients with acute appendicitis. This study was performed with the aim to assess the diagnostic validity of raised TLC count in acute appendicitis.Methods: This was a cross sectional study conducted from 2013 to 2015, in the Department of General Surgery, Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla. A clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis was made based on detailed history taking, clinical examination, and laboratory investigations including TLC count. 50 patients with acute appendicitis were enrolled in the study by convenience sampling, after taking a written, informed consent. Appendicectomy specimen were sent for histopathological examination (HPE).Results: The mean age of the patients was 26.48 ± 12.28 years. 29 (58%) patients were male, and 21 (42%) were female. The negative appendicectomy rate in the present study was 14%. 7 (14%) were normal appendices, 31 (62%) inflamed appendices, 4 (8%) perforated appendices, and 8 (16%) gangrenous appendices as per HPE report. In our study, there were 12 (24%) cases of complicated appendicitis i.e., 8 (16%) cases of gangrenous appendicitis and 4 (8%) cases of perforated appendicitis). TLC had a sensitivity 76.74%, specificity 51.14%, positive predictive value 91.66%, and negative predictive value 28.57%.Conclusion: In our study, TLC was found to have low sensitivity and specificity for acute appendicitis. Hence, used alone, TLC may not be diagnostic of acute appendicitis. However, used in conjunction with other laboratory parameters, it will lead to improvement of diagnostic accuracy.

Background: Tick-borne diseases are caused by a wide variety of viruses, pathogens, and diseases. Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and Babesia spp. are among the most known tick-borne pathogens in Asia. In the Philippines, these pathogens were already reportedly present in dogs and large ruminants, but no study has been reported yet evaluating their presence in goats. Aim: The present study aimed to evaluate the presence of Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and Babesia spp. in goats in Cebu, the Philippines. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 blood samples from goats were collected in Cebu, the Philippines. Profile of sampled goats including age, body score, and sex was obtained. Peripheral blood smear examination and DNA extraction were performed. Nested polymerase chain reaction assay was used to evaluate the presence of Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and Babesia spp. Results: None of the samples were found positive with Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and Babesia spp. infection. Conclusion: Tested goats were negative with Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and Babesia spp. and calls for continuous surveillance of these pathogens due to the reported detection of these pathogens in other livestock animals in the area.

Background: The pattern of burns in victims varies with the manner of infliction of burns. Age plays an important role in deciding the mortality and morbidity of burn victims. Other factors that decide the prognosis of burn victims are the total body surface area (TBSA), Depth of burns, and inhalational injury as evidenced by facial burns. Assessment of these epidemiological factors and inhalational injury can be done as a part of the initial evaluation. Such an assessment aid in resuscitation including emergent airway and decision making regarding the need for skin grafts or escharotomy. Serial measurement of total leucocyte count also helps in identifying the onset of infection and progress to septicaemia and increased mortality rates.Methods: As a part of the initial evaluation, we attempt to study the relation between TBSA, Depth of burns, facial burns, and total WBC count with mortality. A background of septicaemia was also noticed in the majority of patients.Results: For analysis, patients were divided into two groups- Survivors and Non-survivors. A fall in total WBC count coincided with the onset of sepsis and mortality. The other three factors also had a direct correlation with mortality rates.Conclusions: A scoring system constituting all the factors is essential as an initial diagnostic step and it will help in deciding early intubation, escharotomy, and aggressive fluid resuscitation.
