The aims of the study were (i) to describe adult fleas distribution in a strictly indoor cat colony composed of cats with flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) and non-FAD cats and (ii) to evaluate the efficacy of spinosad used alone. Skin lesions were scored according to the SCORing Feline Allergic Dermatitis lesion severity scale (SCORFAD) on days 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 90. Cats were combed prior to the treatment (days 0, 30, and 60) and on days 15, 45, and 90; collected fleas were replaced on the animals. All cats received flavored spinosad tablets (Comfortis) at a dosage of 50–75 mg/kg on days 0, 30, and 60. Cats were fed immediately afterwards. On day 0, a total of 60 fleas were collected (mean: 4±4). Cats with FAD had a SCORFAD of 6, 8, 12, and 13 and harbored 0, 2, 1, and 0 fleas, respectively. Tablets were taken voluntarily by 8, 11, and 12 cats on days 0, 30, and 60, respectively. No adverse event was recorded. From day 15 to day 90, no fleas could be collected. SCORFAD was reduced by 40%, 71%, 80%, 89%, and 98% on days 15, 30, 45, 60, and 90, respectively.

Objectives Few data are available concerning therapeutic aspects of feline trombiculiasis. This study evaluated the efficacy of a 10% w/v fipronil-based spot-on solution in 15 cats with natural Neotrombicula species infestation. Methods Ten cats received 1 drop per affected site on day (D)0 and D14, with the rest of the 0.5 ml pipette applied on the skin between the shoulders. Five cats served as non-treated controls. Parasite score (0 = absent; 3 = severe, >10 parasites/zone) was assessed on D0, D14 and D28 on all animals. Skin lesions (SCORing Feline Allergic Dermatitis lesion severity scale [SCORFAD]) and investigator pruritus scale (IPS; 0 = cat comfortable, grooming like any normal cat; 4 = cat uncomfortable, pruritic all the time) were assessed on treated cats on the same days. Global assessment of efficacy, tolerance and ease of use (GAS; 1 = very poor; 5 = excellent) was assessed on D28. Results All the cats completed the study. Parasite scores of the control cats were maintained throughout the trial (mean ± SD: D0 4 ± 0.7, D14 3.2 ± 1.1 and D28 3.2 ± 0.4). In treated cats, SCORFAD (D0 3.2 ± 5.4, D14 1.1 ± 2.1 [ P <0.002] and D28 0.5 ± 1.3 [ P <0.002]), parasite (D0 3.9 ± 1.3, D14 1.2 ± 0.8 [ P <0.005] and D28 0.4 ± 0.5 [ P <0.005]) and IPS (D0 1 ± 1.2, D14 0.5 ± 1.1 [ P <0.05] and D28 0.3 ± 0.7 [ P <0.05]) scores significantly decreased throughout the trial. On D28, the GAS was 4.2 ± 0.9. There were no adverse effects from treatment. Conclusions and relevance The 10% w/v fipronil preparation appeared to be effective, safe and practical in the treatment of localised Neotrombicula species infestation in these cats.

Objective: To discuss the specific application of Zhuang Medicine Crystal Sugar Ye’An Decoction in senile skin pruritus and its effects on serum IgE detection level. Methods: 90 patients with senile skin pruritus admitted to our hospital from February 2019 to April 2020 were randomly grouped. The general treatment effect, itching, secondary skin lesion severity, serum IL-6, IgE level and adverse reactions between 45 patients treated with Chlorcyclizine Hydrochloride Tablets (The control group) and 45 patients treated with Crystal Sugar Ye’An Decoction were compared. Results: The total effective rate of the treatment in the observation group was 93.33%, much higher than that in the control group, 75.56%. The difference was verified and statistically significant (P<0.05). Before the treatment, the itching area, frequency, duration and severity of secondary skin lesions were at the same level (P>0.05). After the treatment, the above data were all reduced, and the reduction of the observation group was more significant than that of the control group, indicating the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). Before the treatment, there was no difference in serum IL-6 and IgE test data between the two groups (P>0.05). After the treatment, the tendency all declined, and that of the observation group was more obvious, indicating the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). During the experiment, no obvious adverse reactions were observed in both groups. Conclusion: In the treatment of patients with senile pruritus, the application of Zhuang Medicine Crystal Sugar Ye’An Decoction is not only safe and reliable, but can promote the improvement of patients’ symptoms, adjust the level of inflammatory factors, and enhance clinical efficacy.

Twelve German shepherd dogs, each diagnosed as having a recurrent or refractory deep pyoderma (i.e., German shepherd dog pyoderma [GSP]), were evaluated for several parameters over a six-year period. Results indicated that GSP could be associated with flea allergy dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, food allergy, cell-mediated immunodeficiency, or hypothyroidism, or could be an idiopathic disease. The combination of diseases present for a given dog varied from case to case. Adequate control of the pyoderma was achieved only after each identified underlying disease was treated specifically, along with aggressive concurrent medical therapy using systemic antibiotics and medicated baths.

Abstract Food allergies and food intolerances are clinically difficult to discriminate. Most often, along with cutaneous adverse food reactions or CAFR, they are classified as adverse food reactions, whose causes are numerous, including toxic compounds. Eighteen indoor-housed domestic cats with evident clinical symptoms related to CAFR (drooling, back and neck intense itching, neck eczema, chronic conjunctivitis and stomatitis) involving skin lesions were studied. Cytological evaluations of ear, skin and gingival swabs revealed an increased turnover of keratinocytes while the oxytetracycline ELISA determination showed an unexpected high amount of oxytetracycline in all cats at the first visit. All cats were then randomly assigned to receive a standard (SD group) or a nutraceutical diet (ND group) for 60 days. In the ND group a significant reduction of the mean serum concentration of oxytetracycline, pruritus intensity and skin lesion severity (**p<0.01, ***p<0.001, and ***p<0.001, respectively) was observed after 60 days, and associated with a significant improvement in the clinical picture. Although a direct correlation between oxytetracycline presence within cat sera and CAFR-related symptoms has never been described, this study highlights the benefit of a specific nutraceutical diet supplementation in improving clinical symptoms and skin lesions in cats with CARF.

Abstract Objective The Neonatal Adverse Event Severity Scale (NAESS) was developed to improve scoring of neonatal adverse events (AEs) and accelerate neonatal drug development. This is the first validation study of the novel tool. Study design Retrospective validation study assessing the inter-rater reliability (IRR) of the NAESS. Reviewers used real-world AE data from a neonatal trial. Intra-class correlation (ICC) statistical analysis was performed. Result Sixty AEs were randomly assigned to twelve reviewers for a total of 240 severity scores. Generic and AE-specific NAESS tables were assessed. The ICC was 0.63 (95% confidence interval 0.51 to 0.73). Percent variation due to reviewer and residual error was 0.03 and 0.34, respectively. Conclusion In this first study of the NAESS tool, an ICC of 0.63 indicates moderate reliability. Results highlight the need for improved data collection on neonatal AE forms, augmented training on the NAESS tool, and will inform the prospective validation studies.

ABSTRACT: Skin diseases in pigs can negatively impact the production. They cause losses related to the death of the affected pigs, to the cost with the treatment, growth retardation and condemnations in the slaughterhouses. This study was developed to determine the frequency and describe the histopathological findings of skin diseases in pigs in different age groups through a retrospective study from 2006 to 2018. A total of 154 conclusive cases were analyzed, including skin restricted diseases (allergic dermatitis, exudative epidermitis, vesicular dermatitis, pityriasis rosea, swinepox, follicular cyst, papilloma and scrotal hemangioma) or skin lesions secondary to systemic diseases (erysipelas, porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS), bacterial septicemia and multiple hemorrhages without definite cause). The skin lesions were classified as bacterial (46.1%), viral (26.6%), allergic (12.3%), neoplastic (1.3%) and others (13.6%). Swine erysipelas was the most frequent diagnosis (47/154), followed by PDNS (23/154), allergic dermatitis (19/154) and exudative epidermitis (15/154). Vesicular dermatitis (9/154), pityriasis rosea (9/154), septicemia with cutaneous manifestations (9/154), swinepox (9/154) and multiple hemorrhages without definite cause (7/154) were also observed. Follicular cyst (3/154), hyperkeratosis without definite cause (2/154), papilloma (1/154), and scrotal hemangioma (1/154) were less frequently described. Of the conclusive diagnosis, age was reported in 138 cases, with the highest frequency of skin lesions observed at the inspection process during slaughter (56/138).

Pemphigus folliaceus (PF), which is considered the most common autoimmune skin disease in the dog, is associated with the formation of autoantibodies directed against the desmosomes of the upper third of the epidermis, that result in loss of keratinocyte adhesion (acantholysis) and subsequent epidermal cleft formation. The clinical and histopathological findings, along with the response to treatment in 5 PF cases, either idiopathic (3/5) or secondary to trimethoprim-sulfonamides (1/5) and to allergic dermatitis (1/5), are presented and discussed, accordingly. All the 5 dogs exhibited hypotrichosis-alopecia (4/5), erythema (4/5), vesicles (1/5), pustules (5/5), crusts (5/5), epidermal collarettes (3/5), excoriations (1/5), erosions (3/5), ulcers (1/5), fissures (1/5), lichenification, thickening and folding of the skin (1/5), and footpad hyperkeratosis (1/5), that were pruritic in 3 of them. These lesions were located on the head (4/5), pinnae (4/5), limbs (3/5), body trunk (3/5) and the footpads (2/5). Diagnosis was based on the results of lesionai histopathology where the most striking finding was the presence of subcorneal pustules filled with normally looking neutrophils and acanthocytes. Moreover, pustule or crust cytology that was carried out in 3 cases, revealed clusters of acantholytic cells in 2 dogs. The treatment, that was instituted in 2/5 dogs and resulted in a complete resolution of skin lesions, was based on prednisolone in immunosuppressive dosage along with azathioprine (PF secondary to allergic dermatitis), or on a combination of dapsone, Oxytetracycline and vitamin E (idiopathic PF). The remaining 3 cases were left untreated, because one showed a spontaneous remission following withdrawal of the offending medication and the other 2 were lost to follow-up.
