Flower pollination algorithm (FPA) is a new nature-inspired intelligent algorithm which uses the whole update and evaluation strategy on solutions. For solving multidimension function optimization problems, this strategy may deteriorate the convergence speed and the quality of solution of algorithm due to interference phenomena among dimensions. To overcome this shortage, in this paper a dimension by dimension improvement based flower pollination algorithm is proposed. In the progress of iteration of improved algorithm, a dimension by dimension based update and evaluation strategy on solutions is used. And, in order to enhance the local searching ability, local neighborhood search strategy is also applied in this improved algorithm. The simulation experiments show that the proposed strategies can improve the convergence speed and the quality of solutions effectively.

The bat algorithm (BA) is a new bionic intelligent optimization algorithm to simulate the foraging behavior and the echolocation principle of the bats. The parameter initialization of the discussed binary bat algorithm (BBA) has important influence on the convergence speed, convergence precision, and good global searching ability of the BBA. The convergence speed and algorithm searching precision are determined by the pulse of loudness and pulse rate. The simulation experiments are carried out by using the six typical test functions to discuss this influence. The simulation results show that the convergence speed of the BBA is relatively sensitive to the setting of the algorithm parameters. The convergence precision reduces when increasing the rate of bat transmitted pulse alone and the convergence speed increases the launch loudness alone. The proper combination of BBA parameters (the rate of bat transmitted pulse and the launch loudness) can flexibly improve the algorithm’s convergence velocity and improve the accuracy of the searched solutions.

Flower pollination algorithm (FPA) is a metaheuristic algorithm that proceeds its representation from flowers' proliferation role in plants. The optimal plant reproduction strategy involves the survival of the fittest as well as the optimal reproduction of plants in terms of numbers. These factors represent the fundamentals of the FPA and are optimization-oriented. Yang developed the FPA in 2012, which has since shown superiority to other metaheuristic algorithms in solving various real-world problems, such as power and energy, signal and image processing, communications, structural design, clustering and feature selection, global function optimization, computer gaming, and wireless sensor networking. Recently, many variants of FPA have been developed by modification, hybridization, and parameter-tuning to cope with the complex nature of optimization problems this paper provides a survey of FPA and its applications.

In this paper, a whale optimization algorithm based on adaptive inertia weight and variable spiral position updating strategy is proposed. The improved algorithm is used to solve the problem that the whale optimization algorithm is more dependent on the randomness of the parameters, so that the algorithm’s convergence accuracy and convergence speed are insufficient. The adaptive inertia weight, which varies with the fitness of individual whales, is used to balance the algorithm’s global search ability and local exploitation ability. The variable spiral position update strategy based on the collaborative convergence mechanism is used to dynamically adjust the search range and search accuracy of the algorithm. The effective combination of the two can make the improved whale optimization algorithm converge to the optimal solution faster. It had been used 18 international standard test functions, including unimodal function, multimodal function, and fixed-dimensional function to test the improved whale optimization algorithm in this paper. The test results show that the improved algorithm has faster convergence speed and higher algorithm accuracy than the original algorithm and several classic algorithms. The algorithm can quickly converge to near the optimal value in the early stage, and then effectively jump out of the local optimal through adaptive adjustment, and has a certain ability to solve large-scale optimization problems.

PurposeAssembly sequence optimization is a difficult combinatorial optimization problem having to simultaneously satisfy various feasibility constraints and optimization criteria. Applications of evolutionary algorithms have shown a lot of promise in terms of lower computational cost and time. But there remain challenges like achieving global optimum in least number of iterations with fast convergence speed, robustness/consistency in finding global optimum, etc. With the above challenges in mind, this study aims to propose an improved flower pollination algorithm (FPA) and hybrid genetic algorithm (GA)-FPA.Design/methodology/approachIn view of slower convergence rate and more computational time required by the previous discrete FPA, this paper presents an improved hybrid FPA with different representation scheme, initial population generation strategy and modifications in local and global pollination rules. Different optimization objectives are considered like direction changes, tool changes, assembly stability, base component location and feasibility. The parameter settings of hybrid GA-FPA are also discussed.FindingsThe results, when compared with previous discrete FPA and GA, memetic algorithm (MA), harmony search and improved FPA (IFPA), the proposed hybrid GA-FPA gives promising results with respect to higher global best fitness and higher average fitness, faster convergence (especially from the previously developed variant of FPA) and most importantly improved robustness/consistency in generating global optimum solutions.Practical implicationsIt is anticipated that using the proposed approach, assembly sequence planning can be accomplished efficiently and consistently with reduced lead time for process planning, making it cost-effective for industrial applications.Originality/valueDifferent representation schemes, initial population generation strategy and modifications in local and global pollination rules are introduced in the IFPA. Moreover, hybridization with GA is proposed to improve convergence speed and robustness/consistency in finding globally optimal solutions.

An Improved Differential evolution (IDE) is proposed in this paper. It has some new features: 1) using multi-parent search strategy and stochastic ranking strategy to maintain the diversity of the population; 2) a novel convex mutation to accelerate the convergence rate of the classical DE algorithm.; The algorithm of this paper is tested on 13 benchmark optimization problems with linear or/and nonlinear constraints and compared with other evolutionary algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate that the performance of IDE outperforms DE in terms of the quality of the final solution and the stability.
