Infrasound is a type of low frequency signal that occurs in nature and results from man-made events, typically ranging in frequency from 0.01 Hz to 20 Hz. In this paper, a classification method based on Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) and support vector machine (SVM) is proposed to discriminate between three different natural events. The frequency spectrum characteristics of infrasound signals produced by different events, such as volcanoes, are unique, which lays the foundation for infrasound signal classification. First, the HHT method was used to extract the feature vectors of several kinds of infrasound events from the Hilbert marginal spectrum. Then, the feature vectors were classified by the SVM method. Finally, the present of classification and identification accuracy are given. The simulation results show that the recognition rate is above 97.7%, and that approach is effective for classifying event types for small samples.

Support vector machine (SVM) could well solve the over-learning and the low generalization ability of the neural network. But the single classifier cannot achieve satisfactory recognition rate and anti-interference ability. An aircraft engine fault diagnosis method based on support vector machine multiple classifiers is proposed in this paper. Firstly, sample characteristic information which constitutes the fault feature vectors obtained from the existing engine fault. Then, after training the SVM multiple classifier by faulty feature vectors, the SVM model of the fault diagnosis system is established; Finally, the trained SVM multiple classifier is used to recognize and classify the test faults. Applying the noise on the test samples, SVM multiple classifiers can still get a good diagnosis effect. It shows that the fault diagnosis algorithm has good robustness and can be applied to the study of aero engine fault diagnosis.

Energy signature analysis of power appliance is the core of nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM) where the detailed data of the appliances used in houses are obtained by analyzing changes in the voltage and current. This paper focuses on developing an automatic power load event detection and appliance classification based on machine learning. In power load event detection, the paper presents a new transient detection algorithm. By turn-on and turn-off transient waveforms analysis, it can accurately detect the edge point when a device is switched on or switched off. The proposed load classification technique can identify different power appliances with improved recognition accuracy and computational speed. The load classification method is composed of two processes including frequency feature analysis and support vector machine. The experimental results indicated that the incorporation of the new edge detection and turn-on and turn-off transient signature analysis into NILM revealed more information than traditional NILM methods. The load classification method has achieved more than ninety percent recognition rate.

This paper presents the application of Gaussian blur filters and Support Vector Machine (SVM) techniques for greeting recognition among the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria. Existing efforts have considered different recognition gestures. However, tribal greeting postures or gestures recognition for the Nigerian geographical space has not been studied before. Some cultural gestures are not correctly identified by people of the same tribe, not to mention other people from different tribes, thereby posing a challenge of misinterpretation of meaning. Also, some cultural gestures are unknown to most people outside a tribe, which could also hinder human interaction; hence there is a need to automate the recognition of Nigerian tribal greeting gestures. This work hence develops a Gaussian Blur – SVM based system capable of recognizing the Yoruba tribe greeting postures for men and women. Videos of individuals performing various greeting gestures were collected and processed into image frames. The images were resized and a Gaussian blur filter was used to remove noise from them. This research used a moment-based feature extraction algorithm to extract shape features that were passed as input to SVM. SVM is exploited and trained to perform the greeting gesture recognition task to recognize two Nigerian tribe greeting postures. To confirm the robustness of the system, 20%, 25% and 30% of the dataset acquired from the preprocessed images were used to test the system. A recognition rate of 94% could be achieved when SVM is used, as shown by the result which invariably proves that the proposed method is efficient.

AbstractIn clinical research, there is a growing interest in the use of propensity score-based methods to estimate causal effects. G-computation is an alternative because of its high statistical power. Machine learning is also increasingly used because of its possible robustness to model misspecification. In this paper, we aimed to propose an approach that combines machine learning and G-computation when both the outcome and the exposure status are binary and is able to deal with small samples. We evaluated the performances of several methods, including penalized logistic regressions, a neural network, a support vector machine, boosted classification and regression trees, and a super learner through simulations. We proposed six different scenarios characterised by various sample sizes, numbers of covariates and relationships between covariates, exposure statuses, and outcomes. We have also illustrated the application of these methods, in which they were used to estimate the efficacy of barbiturates prescribed during the first 24 h of an episode of intracranial hypertension. In the context of GC, for estimating the individual outcome probabilities in two counterfactual worlds, we reported that the super learner tended to outperform the other approaches in terms of both bias and variance, especially for small sample sizes. The support vector machine performed well, but its mean bias was slightly higher than that of the super learner. In the investigated scenarios, G-computation associated with the super learner was a performant method for drawing causal inferences, even from small sample sizes.

This paper presents an efficient OCR system for the recognition of offline Pashto isolated characters. The lack of an appropriate dataset makes it challenging to match against a reference and perform recognition. This research work addresses this problem by developing a medium-size database that comprises 4488 samples of handwritten Pashto character; that can be further used for experimental purposes. In the proposed OCR system the recognition task is performed using convolution neural network. The performance analysis of the proposed OCR system is validated by comparing its results with artificial neural network and support vector machine based on zoning feature extraction technique. The results of the proposed experiments shows an accuracy of 56% for the support vector machine, 78% for artificial neural network, and 80.7% for the proposed OCR system. The high recognition rate shows that the OCR system based on convolution neural network performs best among the used techniques.

A support vector machine is a machine learning method based on the statistical learning theory and structural risk minimization. The support vector machine is a much better method than ever, because it may solve some actual problems in small samples, high dimension, nonlinear and local minima etc. The article utilizes the theory and method of support vector machine (SVM) regression and establishes the regressive model based on the least square support vector machine (LS-SVM). Through predicting passenger flow on Hangzhou highway in 2000–2008, the paper shows that the regressive model of LS-SVM has much higher accuracy and reliability of prediction, and therefore may effectively predict passenger flow on the highway. Santrauka Atraminių vektorių metodas (Support Vector Machine – SVM) yra skaičiuojamasis metodas, paremtas statistikos teorija, struktūriniu požiūriu mažinant riziką. SVM metodas, palyginti su kitais metodais, yra patikimesnis metodas, nes juo remiantis galima išspręsti realias problemas, esant įvairioms sąlygoms. Tyrimams naudojama SVM metodo regresijos teorija ir sukuriamas regresinis modelis, kuris grindžiamas mažiausių kvadratų atraminių vektorių metodu (Least Squares Support Vector Machine – LS-SVM). Straipsnio autoriai prognozuoja keleivių srautą Hangdžou (Kinija) greitkelyje 2000–2008 m. Gauti rezultatai rodo, kad regresinis LS-SVM modelis yra labai tikslus ir patikimas, todėl gali būti efektyviai taikomas keleivių srautams prognozuoti greitkeliuose.

The monitoring of power quality (PQ) disturbances in a systematic and automated way is an important issue to prevent detrimental effects on power system. The development of new methods for the automatic recognition of single and hybrid PQ disturbances is at present a major concern. This paper presents a combined approach of wavelet transform based support vector machine (WT-SVM) for the automatic classification of single and hybrid PQ disturbances. The proposed approach is applied by using synthetic models of various single and hybrid PQ signals. The suitable features of the PQ waveforms were first extracted by using discrete wavelet transform. Then SVM classifies the type of PQ disturbances based on these features. The classification performance of the proposed algorithm is also compared with wavelet based radial basis function neural network, probabilistic neural network and feed-forward neural network. The experimental results show that the recognition rate of the proposed WT-SVM based classification system is more accurate and much better than the other classifiers.

Persian handwritten digit recognition is one of the important topics of image processing which significantly considered by researchers due to its many applications. The most important challenges in Persian handwritten digit recognition is the existence of various patterns in Persian digit writing that makes the feature extraction step to be more complicated.Since the handcraft feature extraction methods are complicated processes and their performance level are not stable, most of the recent studies have concentrated on proposing a suitable method for automatic feature extraction. In this paper, an automatic method based on machine learning is proposed for high-level feature extraction from Persian digit images by using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). After that, a non-linear multi-class Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier is used for data classification instead of fully connected layer in final layer of CNN. The proposed method has been applied to HODA dataset and obtained 99.56% of recognition rate. Experimental results are comparable with previous state-of-the-art methods
