Essential oils of eight plants, selected after an ethnobotanical survey conducted in Bukusu community in Bungoma County, western Kenya (Tagetes minuta, Tithonia diversifolia, Juniperus procera, Solanecio mannii, Senna didymobotrya, Lantana camara, Securidaca longepedunculata, andHoslundia opposita), were initially screened (at two doses) for their repellence against brown ear tick,Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, using a dual-choice climbing assay. The oils ofT. minutaandT. diversifoliawere then selected for more detailed study. Dose-response evaluations of these oils showed thatT. minutaoil was more repellent (RD50= 0.0021 mg) than that ofT. diversifolia(RD50= 0.263 mg). Gas chromatography-linked mass spectrometric (GC-MS) analyses showed different compositions of the two oils.T. minutaoil is comprised mainly ofcis-ocimene (43.78%), dihydrotagetone (16.71%), piperitenone (10.15%),trans-tagetone (8.67%), 3,9-epoxy-p-mentha-1,8(10)diene (6.47%),β-ocimene (3.25%), andcis-tagetone (1.95%), whereasT. diversifoliaoil is comprised mainly ofα-pinene (63.64%),β-pinene (15.00%), isocaryophyllene (7.62%), nerolidol (3.70%), 1-tridecanol (1.75%), limonene (1.52%), and sabinene (1.00%). The results provide scientific rationale for traditional use of raw products of these plants in controlling livestock ticks by the Bukusu community and lay down some groundwork for exploiting partially refined products such as essential oils of these plants in protecting cattle against infestations withR. appendiculatus.

AbstractPreviously, 4-methylguaiacol, a major constituent of cattle anal odour, was found to have a high repellence on Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. In the present study, 10 structural analogues of the phenol were tested for repellence against R. appendiculatus in order to assess the effects of (i) absence or presence of the 4-alkyl group of varying length, (ii) inclusion of a double bond in the 4-alkyl chain, (iii) linking the two phenolic oxygen in a methylenedioxy bridge, (iv) replacement of the OCH3 with CH3 and inclusion of another CH3 at position 6, and (v) presence of an additional OCH3 group at position 6. The analogues comprised of 2-methoxyphenol (guaiacol), 4-ethyl-2- methoxyphenol, 4-propyl-2-methoxyphenol, 4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol (eugenol), 3,4-methylenedioxytoluene, 2,4- dimethylphenol, 4-ethyl-2-methylphenol, 2,4,6-trimethylphenol, 4-propyl-2,6-dimethoxy-phenol and 4-allyl-2,6- dimethoxyphenol, which were compared at different doses in a two-choice climbing assay set up. Each analogue showed either increased or reduced repellence compared with 4-methylguaiacol. The structural feature that was associated with the highest repellence was 4-propyl moiety in the guaiacol unit (RD75 = 0.031 for 4-propyl-2- methoxyphenol; that of 4-methylguaiacol = 0.564). Effects of blending selected analogues with high repellence were also compared. However, none of the blends showed incremental increase in repellence compared with that of 4- propyl-2-methoxyphenol. We are currently evaluating the effects of controlled release of the compound at different sites on cattle on the behavior and success of R. appendiculatus to locate their predilection feeding site.

Opuntia ficus-indica(the cactus or prickly pear) is a cactus belonging to the Opuntiae family. Several Opuntiae plant parts have been used in traditional Moroccan medicine. In this study, we investigated its most common use as an analgesic. An ethnobotanical study ofOpuntia ficus-indicawas first conducted in 10 areas in Morocco. Extracts fromOpuntia ficus-indicacladodes were obtained using a decoction method and its analgesic activity in mice was investigated by the hot plate and tail flick methods. Cladode extracts had significant (p<0.05) analgesic activity at intraperitoneal doses of 300, 500, and 1000 mg/kg body weight. Both methods revealed significantly increased latency at all three doses (p<0.05) compared to controls. These data suggest that the traditional use of this plant as an analgesic is valid; in fact, perhaps it may be a centrally-acting analgesic.

On 11th March 2020, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced a pandemic caused by a novel beta-coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, designated COVID-19. The virus emerged in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, has spread across the world as a global pandemic. The traditional use of medicines from plants can be traced back to 60,000 years. Global interest in the development of drugs from natural products has increased greatly during the last few decades. Essential oils (EOs) have been studied through the centuries and are known to possess various pharmaceutical properties. In the present review, we have highlighted the current biology, epidemiology, various clinical aspects, different diagnostic techniques, clinical symptoms, and management of COVID-19. An overview of the antiviral action of EOs, along with their proposed mechanism of action and in silico studies conducted, is described. The reported studies of EOs&#039; antiviral activity highlight the baseline data about the additive and/or synergistic effects among primary or secondary phytoconstituents found in individual oils, combinations or blends of oils and between EOs and antiviral drugs. It is hoped that further research will provide better insights into EOs&#039; potential to limit viral infection and aid in providing solutions through natural, therapeutically active agents.

The knowledge of traditional healers o en represents a basis for the pharmacological and phytochemical inves ga on of naturals medicaments. This work aims for the phytochemical study and evaluation of the antioxidant activity of essential oils of medicinal plant Pistacia atlantica.Through the results obtained, it appears that the leaves are rich in substances with a high antioxidant power. For essential oils, it is 0.24 % for 100 g of plant material. And the phytochemical screening of the plant showed the presence of tannins, resins, coumarins, terpenoids and  flavonoids, and absence of saponins. The strong antioxidant activity of extracts obtained only confirms the traditional use of this plant by the local population.

The ethnobotanical survey of Euclea divinorum Hiern (Ebenaceae) was conducted on Soqotra Island, Yemen. The root bark is used to treat mouth, dental, dermal and blood diseases in the traditional medicine of the island. The study is the first report about the effect of the plant root barks against six human pathogenic fungi. The non-polar dichloromethane extract of Euclea divinorum root bark showed stronger antifungal activities compared to polar direct and sequential methanolic extracts. These extracts showed significant broad antifungal activity against Absidia corymbifera, Aspergillus fumigatus, Candida krusei, Microsporum gypseum, Mucor sp. and Trichophyton mentagrophytes compared to the standard antibiotic drug nystatin. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) revealed the presence of the naphthoquinones in the extracts. The results showed an extraction process to separate most antifungal naphthoquinones from the root bark by using non-polar solvent dichloromethane, while flavonoids remained in the polar methanolic extracts; therefore, the polar sequential and direct methanolic extracts recorded higher antioxidant activity than the non-polar extracts with less toxicity. The biological and chemical results identified the presence of antifungal and antioxidant constituents in the root bark and confirm its traditional use in Soqotra Island as crude powder to treat dental and dermal diseases and to clean teeth. Moreover, our results are compared with literature review on ethnobotany and phytopharmacology of the E. divinorum to present a medicinal monograph about the plant.

Although traditional green and black tea is the world’s favourite drink, health or herbal “teas” are becoming increasingly popular. Despite the diversity of indigenous South African plants, only two herbal teas, namely honeybush and rooibos, are presently being produced on a commercial basis. However, a “tea” obtained from the Athrixia phylicoides plant, is extremely popular in the eastern interior of the country and may have commercial potential. Two ethnobotanical surveys were conducted in the Limpopo Province and in KwaZulu-Natal to obtain information on the traditional use of the plant amongst different ethnic groups. It was found that A. phylicoides is used as a herbal “tea”, as a medicine and for the making of brooms. Although A. phylicoides tea is very popular, the plant is most often used for the making of brooms. Medicinally it is used to treat “heart problems”, high blood pressure and diabetes. Only minor ethnically-based differences in medicinal use were revealed by the surveys. Its symbolic value and use during religious ceremonies were previously undocumented. Owing to indiscriminate harvesting techniques practised by pickers from urban areas, the plant is becoming increasingly scarce and may be faced with local extinction.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of essential oils (EO) from Lippia turbinata (LT) and Tagetes minuta (TM) as well as the rotation of both EO on fermentation parameters in vitro. Daily addition of LT, TM, or a 3-day rotation between them (TM/LT), as well as a control (without EO), was evaluated using the rumen simulation technique (Rusitec). The experiment lasted 19 days, with a 7-day adaptation period, followed by 12 days of treatment (Days 0–12). The EO were dissolved in ethanol (70% vol/vol) to be added daily to fermenters (300 μL/L) from Day 0. Daily measurements included methane concentration, total gas production, apparent DM disappearance and pH, which started 2 days before the addition of treatments. On Days 0, 4, 8 and 12 apparent crude protein disappearance and neutral detergent fibre disappearance, ammonia and volatile fatty acid concentration and composition were determined. Methane production was significantly inhibited shortly after addition of both EO added individually, and persisted over time with no apparent adaptation to EO addition. The TM/LT treatment showed a similar effect on methane production, suggesting that rotating the EO did not bring further improvements in reduction or persistency compared with the inclusion of the EO individually. Gas production, total volatile fatty acid concentration and composition and apparent crude protein disappearance were not affected by EO addition. Compared with the control, a 5% reduction of apparent DM disappearance and a 15% reduction of neutral detergent fibre disappearance were observed with the addition of EO. Only TM and TM/LT reduced ammonia concentration. Given the significant and persistent antimethanogenic activity of both EO, and the potential of T. minuta to modify nitrogen metabolism, EO from these plant species are of interest for developing new feed additives with potential application in ruminant nutrition that are also likely to be acceptable to consumers.
