This paper presents an analysis of balking and reneging in finite-buffer discrete-time single server queue with single and multiple working vacations. An arriving customer may balk with a probability or renege after joining according to a geometric distribution. The server works with different service rates rather than completely stopping the service during a vacation period. The service times during a busy period, vacation period, and vacation times are assumed to be geometrically distributed. We find the explicit expressions for the stationary state probabilities. Various system performance measures and a cost model to determine the optimal service rates are presented. Moreover, some queueing models presented in the literature are derived as special cases of our model. Finally, the influence of various parameters on the performance characteristics is shown numerically.

This article analyzes an infinite buffer discrete-time single server queueing system with variant working vacations in which customers arrive according to a geometric process. As soon as the system becomes empty, the server takes working vacations. The server will take a maximum number K of working vacations until either he finds at least on customer in the queue or the server has exhaustively taken all the vacations. The service times during regular busy period, working vacation period and vacation times are assumed to be geometrically distributed. The probability generating function of the steady-state probabilities and the closed form expressions of the system size when the server is in different states have been derived. In addition, some other performance measures, their monotonicity with respect to K and a cost model are presented to determine the optimal service rate during working vacation.

In this paper, we study a discrete-time finite buffer batch arrival queue with multiple geometric working vacations and vacation interruption: the server serves the customers at the lower rate rather than completely stopping during the vacation period and can come back to the normal working level once there are customers after a service completion during the vacation period, i.e., a vacation interruption happens. The service times during a service period, service times during a vacation period and vacation times are geometrically distributed. The queue is analyzed using the supplementary variable and the imbedded Markov-chain techniques. We obtain steady-state system length distributions at pre-arrival, arbitrary and outside observer's observation epochs. We also present probability generation function (p.g.f.) of actual waiting-time distribution in the system and some performance measures.

This article presents the analysis of a finite buffer M/M/1 queue with multiple and single working vacations. The arriving customers balk (that is do not join the queue) with a probability and renege (that is leave the queue after joining) according to exponential distribution. The inter-arrival times, service times during a regular service period, service times during a vacation period and vacation times are independent and exponentially distributed random variables. Steady-state behavior of the model is considered and various performance measures, some special cases of the model and cost analysis are discussed.

We study a finite buffer N-policy GI/M(n)/1 queue with Bernoulli-schedule vacation interruption. The server works with a slower rate during vacation period. At a service completion epoch during working vacation, if there are at least N customers present in the queue, the server interrupts vacation and otherwise continues the vacation. Using the supplementary variable technique and recursive method, we obtain the steady state system length distributions at prearrival and arbitrary epochs. Some special cases of the model, various performance measures, and cost analysis are discussed. Finally, parameter effect on the performance measures of the model is presented through numerical computations.

We consider discouraged arrival of Markovian queueing systems whose service speed is regulated according to the number of customers in the system. We will reduce the congestion in two ways. First we attempt to reduce the congestion by discouraging the arrivals of customers from joining the queue. Secondly we reduce the congestion by introducing the concept of service switches. First we consider a model in which multiple servers have three service ratesμ1,μ2, andμ(μ1≤μ2<μ), say, slow, medium, and fast rates, respectively. If the number of customers in the system exceeds a particular pointK1orK2, the server switches to the medium or fast rate, respectively. For this adaptive queueing system the steady state probabilities are derived and some performance measures such as expected number in the system/queue and expected waiting time in the system/queue are obtained. Multiple server discouraged arrival model having one service switch and single server discouraged arrival model having one and two service switches are obtained as special cases. A Matlab program of the model is presented and numerical illustrations are given.

We consider a finite-buffer single server queueing system with queue-length dependent vacations where arrivals occur according to a batch Markovian arrival process (BMAP). The service discipline is P-limited service, also called E-limited with limit variation (ELV) where the server serves until either the system is emptied or a randomly chosen limit of L customers has been served. Depending on the number of customers present in the system, the server will monitor his vacation times. Queue-length distributions at various epochs such as before, arrival, arbitrary and after, departure have been obtained. Several other service disciplines like Bernoulli scheduling, nonexhaustive service, and E-limited service can be treated as special cases of the P-limited service. Finally, the total expected cost function per unit time is considered to determine locally optimal values N* of N or a maximum limit L^* of L^ as the number of customers served during a service period at a minimum cost.

This paper deals with a single-server discrete-time Geo/G/1 queueing model with Bernoulli feedback and N-policy where the server leaves for modified multiple vacations once the system becomes empty. Applying the law of probability decomposition, the renewal theory and the probability generating function technique, we explicitly derive the transient queue length distribution as well as the recursive expressions of the steady-state queue length distribution. Especially, some corresponding results under special cases are directly obtained. Furthermore, some numerical results are provided for illustrative purposes. Finally, a cost optimization problem is numerically analyzed under a given cost structure.

This paper presents an analysis of the single-server discrete-time finite-buffer queue with general interarrival and geometric service time,GI/Geom/1/N. Using the supplementary variable technique, and considering the remaining interarrival time as a supplementary variable, two variations of this model, namely the late arrival system with delayed access (LAS-DA) and early arrival system (EAS), have been examined. For both cases, steady-state distributions for outside observers as well as at random and prearrival epochs have been obtained. The waiting time analysis has also been carried out. Results for theGeom/G/1/Nqueue with LAS-DA have been obtained from theGI/Geom/1/Nqueue with EAS. We also give various performance measures. An algorithm for computing state probabilities is given in an appendix.
