Phase changes in a commercial AA8011 alloy from different initial microstructure conditions were studied using thermoelectric power (ΔS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques with the purpose of obtaining evidence of the interaction between recovery-precipitation and recrystallization-precipitation processes occurring during nonisothermal heating at different rates. Thermoelectric power and its thermal derivative reflect this evidence by a displacement of the characteristic precipitation peaks, the recovery and recrystallization contributions remaining masked by the strong incidence of the iron precipitation on that property, while DSC measurements detect the emergence of new peaks not observed on thermograms of homogenized samples. An exhaustive study of these peaks permits direct differentiation between precipitation and recovery-recrystallization contributions. TEM confirms the interaction between both processes by means of local observations.

Phase transitions in the Co-rich part of the Co–Al–Nb–Mo phase diagram are studied by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. The obtained results were compared with the results for alloys of the binary Co–Al and ternary Co–Al–Nb, and Co–Al–Mo systems. Formation of the intermetallic phase with the L12 structure was found in a range of alloys with 10 at.% Al, 2–9 at.% Nb, and 3–7 at.% Mo. Intermetallic compound Co2Nb, Laves phase with the different chemical composition and crystal structure (C14 and C36) was detected in the Co–Al–Nb and Co–Al–Nb–Mo samples after vacuum solution treating at 1250 °C for 30 h.

Precipitation behaviour in an Al-Mg-Si alloy aged at 403 K to 483 K was studied with respect to thermal stability and morphology of the metastable precipitates, using high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Vickers microhardness tests and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. The quantitative analysis of the DSC measurements revealed that the change in the first exothermic peak (the peak P) of the metastable phase is proportional to the increases in the Vickers hardness. The HRTEM observations showed the four types of the precipitates in morphology during the isothermal ageing and the change in the peak P was mainly caused by the formation of the precipitates with irregular contrast and the ones with the network interior angle between 65°and 80°

Response to isochronal annealing up to 440°C was investigated in squeeze cast Mg2Y1Zn alloy and in the same alloy prepared by powder metallurgy and extrusion at 280°C (PM). Electrical resistivity measurements at 77 K and at room temperature after each annealing step and differential scanning calorimetry performed at various heating rates characterized phase changes proceeding during the heat treatments. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy revealed ribbons of a long-period ordered structure and a relatively high density of stacking faults in grain interiors of the cast alloy having the grain size of ~50 μm. Well pronounced subgrains were observed in the PM prepared alloy. Secondary phase particles decorate grain boundaries in this alloy. Electrical resistivity response of the cast alloy to isochronal annealing up to 440°C shows three precipitation processes, whereas one significant process was revealed in the PM alloy. Activation energies of precipitation processes were determined. Microhardness exhibits good thermal stability in the whole temperature range in the cast alloy and up to 360°C in the PM alloy.

The precipitation behavior in an Al-Cu alloy isothermally annealed at 373K~493K was studied, using the Vickers microhardness tests, Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and Transmission electron microscope(TEM) observations. An additional endothermic peak was found in DSC measurements which may be attributed to the θ″-phase independent from the formations of the G.P.(Ⅱ) and the θ′-phase at the aging temperatures. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) revealed that the G.P.(Ⅰ) is formed at a very early stage of isothermal aging at 463K. Comparing the Vickers microhardness and TEM images, it was concluded that G.P.(Ⅱ) is mainly responsible for the peak hardness.

Background: Solid Lipid Nanoparticles (SLNs) possess unique in vivo features such as high resistivity, bioavailability, and habitation at the target site. Coating nanoparticles with polymers such as chitosan greatly affects their pharmacokinetic behavior, stability, tissue uptake, and controlled drug delivery. The aim of this study was to prepare and evaluate the biodistribution of 99mTc-labeled SLNs and chitosan modified SLNs in mice. Methods: 99mTc-oxine was prepared and utilized to radiolabel pre-papered SLNs or chitosan coated SLNs. After purification of radiolabeled SLNs (99mTc-SLNs) and radiolabeled chitosan-coated SLNs (99mTc-Chi-SLNs) using Amicon filter, they were injected into BALB/c mice to evaluate their biodistribution patterns. In addition, nanoparticles were characterized using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). Results: 99mTc-oxine with high radiochemical purity (RCP~100%) and stability (RCP > 97% at 24 h) was used to provide 99mTc-SLNs and 99mTc-Chi-SLNs with high initial RCP (100%). TEM image and DLS data suggest 99mTc- SLNs susceptibility to aggregation. To that end, the main portion of 99mTc-SLNs radioactivity accumulates in the liver and intestines, while 99mTc-Chi-SLNs sequesters in the liver, intestines and kidneys. The blood radioactivity of 99mTc-Chi-SLNs was higher than that of 99mTc-SLNs by 7.5, 3.17 and 3.5 folds at 1, 4 and 8 h post-injection. 99mTc- Chi-SLNs uptake in the kidneys in comparison with 99mTc-SLNs was higher by 37.48, 5.84 and 11 folds at 1, 4 and 8h. Conclusion: The chitosan layer on the surface of 99mTc-Chi-SLNs reduces lipophilicity in comparison with 99mTc- SLNs. Therefore, 99mTc-Chi-SLNs are less susceptible to aggregation, which leads to their lower liver uptake and higher kidney uptake and blood concentration.

In this work, advanced polymer nanocomposites comprising of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and nanodiamonds (NDs) were developed using a single-step solution-casting method. The properties of the prepared PVA/NDs nanocomposites were investigated using Raman spectroscopy, small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). It was revealed that the tensile strength improved dramatically with increasing ND content in the PVA matrix, suggesting a strong interaction between the NDs and the PVA. SEM, TEM, and SAXS showed that NDs were present in the form of agglomerates with an average size of ~60 nm with primary particles of diameter ~5 nm. These results showed that NDs could act as a good nanofiller for PVA in terms of improving its stability and mechanical properties.

In this study, the interfacial reactions and mechanical properties of solder joints after multiple reflows were observed to evaluate the applicability of the developed materials for high-temperature soldering for automotive electronic components. The microstructural changes and mechanical properties of Sn-Cu solders regarding Al(Si) addition and the number of reflows were investigated to determine their reliability under high heat and strong vibrations. Using differential scanning calorimetry, the melting points were measured to be approximately 227, 230, and 231 °C for the SC07 solder, SC-0.01Al(Si), and SC-0.03Al(Si), respectively. The cross-sectional analysis results showed that the total intermetallic compounds (IMCs) of the SC-0.03Al(Si) solder grew the least after the as-reflow, as well as after 10 reflows. Electron probe microanalysis and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the Al-Cu and Cu-Al-Sn IMCs were present inside the solders, and their amounts increased with increasing Al(Si) content. In addition, the Cu6Sn5 IMCs inside the solder became more finely distributed with increasing Al(Si) content. The Sn-0.5Cu-0.03Al(Si) solder exhibited the highest shear strength at the beginning and after 10 reflows, and ductile fracturing was observed in all three solders. This study will facilitate the future application of lead-free solders, such as an Sn-Cu-Al(Si) solder, in automotive electrical components.

Compositing is an interesting strategy that has always been employed to introduce or enhance desired functionalities in material systems. In this paper, sponges containing polypropylene, lignin, and octavinyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OV-POSS) were successfully prepared via an easy and elegant strategy called thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). To fully explore the behaviour of different components of prepared sponges, properties were characterized by a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared measurement (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, wettability properties toward an organic liquid and oil were investigated. The FTIR analysis confirmed the chemical modification of the components. TGA and DSC measurements revealed thermal stability was much better with an increase in OV-POSS content. OV-POSS modified sponges exhibited ultra-hydrophobicity and high oleophilicity with water contact angles of more than 125°. The SEM revealed that POSS molecules acted as a support for reduced surface roughness. Moreover, OV-POSS-based blend sponges showed higher sorption capacities compared with other blend sponges without OV-POSS. The new blend sponges demonstrated a potential for use as sorbent engineering materials in water remediation.

Here, nanocomposites of high-molecular-weight polyethylene (HMWPE) and HMWPE-UHMWPE (80/20 wt.%) containing a low amount of multilayer graphene oxide (mGO) (≤0.1 wt.%) were produced via twin-screw extrusion to produce materials with a higher tribological performance than UHMWPE. Due to the high viscosity of both polymers, the nanocomposites presented a significant concentration of agglomerates. However, the mechanical (tensile) and tribological (volumetric loss) performances of the nanocomposites were superior to those of UHMWPE. The morphology of the nanocomposites was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), microtomography, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The explanation for these results is based on the superlubricity phenomenon of mGO agglomerates. It was also shown that the well-exfoliated mGO also contained in the nanocomposite was of fundamental importance as a mechanical reinforcement for the polymer. Even with a high concentration of agglomerates, the nanocomposites displayed tribological properties superior to UHMWPE’s (wear resistance up to 27% higher and friction coefficient up to 57% lower). Therefore, this manuscript brings a new exception to the rule, showing that agglomerates can act in a beneficial way to the mechanical properties of polymers, as long as the superlubricity phenomenon is present in the agglomerates contained in the polymer.

In the present study, microstructural and mechanical properties of EN AW 7075 following stress-aging were assessed. For this purpose, properties of stress-aged samples were compared with values obtained for conventionally aged counterparts. It is revealed that the strength and hardness of EN AW 7075 can be increased by the presence of external stresses during aging. Precipitation kinetics were found to be accelerated. The effects of conventional and stress-aging on the microstructure were analyzed using synergetic techniques: the differently aged samples were probed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) in order to characterize the precipitation processes. DSC was found to be an excellent screening tool for the analysis of precipitation processes during aging of this alloy with and without the presence of external stresses. Furthermore, using electron microscopy it was revealed that an improvement in mechanical properties can be correlated to changes in the morphologies and sizes of precipitates formed.
