Circularly polarized (CP) dual frequency cross-shaped slotted patch antenna on 1.575 mm thick glass microfiber reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composite material substrate is designed and fabricated for satellite applications. Asymmetric cross-shaped slots are embedded in the middle of the square patch for CP radiation and four hexagonal slots are etched on the four sides of the square patch for desired dual frequency. Different substrate materials have been analysed to achieve the desired operating band. The experimental results show that the impedance bandwidth is approximately 30 MHz (2.16 GHz to 2.19 GHz) for lower band and 40 MHz (3.29 GHz to 3.33 GHz) for higher band with an average peak gain of 6.59 dBiC and 5.52 dBiC, respectively. Several optimizations are performed to obtain the values of the antenna physical parameters. Moreover, the proposed antenna possesses compactness, light weight, simplicity, low cost, and circularly polarized. It is an attractive candidate for dual band satellite antennas where lower band can be used for uplink and upper band can be used for downlink.

This paper proposes a compact microstrip patch antenna for operating in 2.4 GHz ISM and 3.5 GHz WiMAX bands with circularly polarized (CP) radiation. The CP radiation in dual-bands is a result of two multilayered truncated corner stacked square patches, while the reactive impedance surface (RIS) is used for antenna size miniaturization for the lower operating frequency band. Since the overall lateral antenna dimensions are controlled by the lower frequency band (higher wavelength), reducing the electrical size of the antenna for lower band results in overall smaller antenna dimensions. The measured 3-dB axial ratio bandwidths of the in-house fabricated antenna prototype are 6.1% (2.40–2.55 GHz) for the lower band and 5.7% (3.40–3.60 GHz) for the upper band, while the 10-dBS11bandwidths for the two bands are 8.1% (2.39–2.59 GHz) and 6.9% (3.38–3.62 GHz), respectively. The maximum gain at boresight for the lower band is 2.93 dBic at 2.5 GHz, while the gain for the upper band is 6.26 dBic at 3.52 GHz. The overall volume of the proposed antenna is 0.292λo × 0.292λo × 0.044λo, whereλois the corresponding free-space wavelength at 2.5 GHz.

The design and measurement of reconfigurable circularly polarized capacitive fed microstrip antenna are presented. Small isosceles right angle triangular sections are removed from diagonally opposite corners for the generation of circular polarization (CP) of axial ratio bandwidth of 11.1%. Horizontal slits of different lengths are inserted at the edges of the truncated patch to provide the dual-band CP and by switching PIN diodes across the slits ON and OFF, reconfigurable circularly polarized antenna is realized. The antenna shows dual-band behavior with reconfigurable CP. In order to enhance the operation bandwidth of the antenna, an inclined slot was embedded on the patch along with PIN diodes across the horizontal slits. This proposed antenna gave an impedance bandwidth of 66.61% (ON state) ranging from 4.42 to 8.80 GHz and 68.42% (OFF state) ranging from 4.12 to 8.91 GHz and exhibits dual-frequency CP with PIN diode in OFF state and single-frequency CP with PIN diode in ON state with good axial ratio bandwidth. The axial ratio bandwidth of 4.42, 2.35, and 2.72% is obtained from the antenna. The antenna has a similar radiation pattern in all the three different CP bands and almost constant gain within the bands of CP operation.

A small size and very thinwideband dipole microstrip patch antenna for dual frequency operation is designed and analysed in this paper. The dimension of the proposed antenna is 40×30×1.6 mm3 .The proposed antenna is designed using a low cost and reliable FR4 substrate. This FR4 substrate material has a thickness of 1.6 mm, dielectric constant of 4.4 and loss tangent of 0.02. The proposed antennaresonates at 2.19 GHz and 2.5 GHz frequencies with a -10 dB impedance bandwidth of 4.37 GHz, ranging from 1.8 GHz to 6.17 GHz.This shows the proposed antenna bandwidth is increased to 200%. The VSWR of the proposed antenna is less than 2 for entire operating frequency range. Radiation efficiency is above 70% at both of the resonance frequencies. A very low cross polarization is found at all resonance frequencies. CST Microwave Studio is used to design and analyse the proposed antenna.

This research proposes a dual-frequency circularly polarized truncated square aperture patch antenna with slant stripline and L-shaped slot for WLAN applications. In the antenna design, the parameters were optimized and the WLAN-enabled dual-frequency (2.4 and 5.8 GHz) antenna was realized. Simulations were subsequently carried out for the impedance bandwidth (S11) < −10 dB, axial ratio (AR) ≤ 3 dB, optimal gain, and bidirectional radiation pattern. To validate, an antenna prototype was fabricated and the experiments were undertaken. The simulated and experimental results are in good agreement. In essence, the proposed WLAN-enabled dual-frequency circularly polarized antenna is most suited for applications in the vertically and horizontally elongated areas, including in the tunnel, train carriage, and buildings.

In this paper, a dual-band generation in rectangular microstrip patch antenna (RMPA) using a superstrate metal ring has been proposed. In this configuration, a metal ring is placed above the rectangular patch with the support of two dielectric posts. The metal ring behaves as a superstrate layer and resonator for the lower band, the other band is generated by microstrip patch and hence the combined configuration metal ring and patch gives dual-band characteristics. The lower band resonates at 9 GHz with an impedance bandwidth of 6.8% and higher band at 11.35 GHz with impedance bandwidth of 3.1%. The co-polarized peak gain values at these frequencies are 8.2 dBi and 10.1 dBi respectively. This may be used in applications like airborne and naval-radar. The prototypes are fabricated using commercially available dielectric substrate (RT-Duriod r = 2.2 and thickness h =1.6 mm). The measured results show good agreement with the simulated predictions.

This paper investigates the numerical and experimental analysis of a low-cost and dual-band microstrip patch antenna for the fifth generation (5G) mobile communications. The numerical analysis of the proposed antenna is performed using the computational electromagnetic simulator (CEMS) software which is based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) and CST software which is based on the finite integration technique (FIT). The performance of the proposed antenna designed and fabricated on a low-cost FR-4 substrate is verified with the simulated and measured results. The antenna operates at dual frequency bands which are 24 and 28 GHz. The antenna maximum gain values are 3.20 dBi and 3.99 dBi in the x-y plane at 24 and 28 GHz, respectively. The proposed antenna provides almost omni-directional patterns suitable for 5G mobile communication devices.

AbstractA broadband circularly polarized slotted square patch antenna with horizontal meandered strip (HMS) is presented and studied. The HMS feeding technique provides the good impedance matching and broadside symmetrical radiation patterns. A set of cross asymmetrical slots are etched on the radiating patch to realize the circular polarization. An electrically small stub is added on the edge of the antenna for further improvement in performance. Measured 10-dB impedance bandwidth (IBW) and 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) of the proposed antenna are 32.31 % (3.14–4.35 GHz) and 20.91 % (3.34–4.12 GHz), respectively. The gain of the antenna is varied from 3.5 to 4.86dBi within 3-dB ARBW. Measured results matched well with the simulated results.

Abstract A bilayer split-ring chiral metamaterial converts the linearly polarized wave, into a nearly perfect left or right-handed circularly polarized wave. The proposed antenna is intended to operate at center frequency of 5.80 GHz with switchable polarization capability. The polarization re-configurability is achieved by electronically switching of two PIN-diode pairs, which are embedded into bilayer split-ring Chiral Metamaterial. The optimized length of rectangular patch is 16 mm and width is 12.1 mm. Two types of radiation characteristics offered by the proposed antenna; left hand circularly polarized in mode 1 and right hand circularly polarized in mode 2. Measured results show that its impedance bandwidth is 155 MHz from 5.70 to 5.855 GHz for both mode 1 and mode 2. The measured axial-ratio bandwidth is 100 MHz from 5.75 to 5.85 GHz for mode 1 and 110 MHz from 5.73 to 5.84 GHz for mode 2. Antenna has LHCP gain of 2.52 dBi and RHCP gain of −23 dBi in mode 1. RHCP gain of 2 dBi and polarization purity of about −20 dBi is obtained in mode 2. The proposed antenna has simple structure, low cost and it has potential application in field of wireless communication (i.e., WiMax, WLAN etc.).
