A frequency domain spectral element model is developed for a rotor system that consists of two spinning shafts and an interim disk or blade system. In this study, the shafts are represented by spinning Timoshenko beam models, and the interim disk system is represented by a uniform thick rigid disk with an unbalanced mass. In our derivation of the governing equations of motion of the disk system, the disk is considered to be wobbling about the geometric center of the disk at which the spinning shafts are attached. The high accuracy of the proposed spectral element model is evaluated by comparison with the natural frequencies obtained using the conventional finite element method (FEM). The spectral element model is then used to investigate the effects of the unbalanced mass on the natural frequencies and dynamic responses of an example rotor system.

Asymmetric rotor systems widely exist in commercial plants. In the previous studies about asymmetric rotor systems, parameters such as material properties and boundary conditions are deterministic. To obtain a deep understanding of the dynamics of asymmetric rotor systems, a generator rotor system considering uncertain factors is studied in this paper. The equations of motion of the three-dimensional finite element model are solved in the rotating frame. The component mode synthesis is used to reduce the degrees of freedom. By employing the Chebyshev interval method (CIM), the uncertain gravity responses of the generator rotor system are investigated. The influences of the uncertainties in the bearing’s properties and the rotor’s material properties on the gravity response are studied in cases with a single uncertainty and double uncertainties. The accuracy and the efficiency of CIM are validated by comparing with the results of the scanning method. The results show that uncertainties have remarkable influences on the gravity response, and that these influences are different from each other. The proposed method and the results can provide guidance to the design and optimization of the rotary machinery.

This paper focuses on the effects of the off-design operation of CAES on the dynamic characteristics of the triple-gear-rotor system. A finite element model of the system is set up with unbalanced excitations, torque load excitations, and backlash which lead to variations of tooth contact status. An experiment is carried out to verify the accuracy of the mathematical model. The results show that when the system is subjected to large-scale torque load lifting at a high rotating speed, it has two stages of relatively strong periodicity when the torque load is light, and of chaotic when the torque load is heavy, with the transition between the two states being relatively quick and violent. The analysis of the three-dimensional acceleration spectrum and the meshing force shows that the variation in the meshing state and the fluctuation of the meshing force is the basic reasons for the variation in the system response with the torque load. In addition, the three rotors in the triple-gear-rotor system studied show a strong similarity in the meshing states and meshing force fluctuations, which result in the similarity in the dynamic responses of the three rotors.

In this paper, a fast Fourier transforms (FFT)-based spectral analysis method (SAM) is proposed for the dynamic analysis of spectral element models subjected to the non-zero initial conditions. To evaluate the proposed SAM, the spectral element model for the simply supported Bernoulli-Euler beam is considered as an example problem. The accuracy of the proposed SAM is evaluated by comparing the dynamic responses obtained by SAM with the exact analytical solutions.

Abstract Modern turbomachinery is used to provide power for a wide range of applications, from steam turbines for electrical power plants to the turbopumps used in the Space Shuttle Main Engine. Such devices are subject to a variety of dynamical problems, including vibration, rotordynamical instability, and shaft whirl. In order to properly design and evaluate the performance and stability of turbomachinery, It is important that appropriate analytical tools be available that allow for the study of potentially important dynamical effects. This research effort is concerned with developing a procedure to account for disk flexibility which can readily be used for investigating how such effects might influence the natural frequencies and critical speeds of practical rotor systems. In the present work, a transfer matrix procedure is developed in which the disk flexibility effects are accounted for by means of additional terms included in the transfer matrix formulation. In this development, the shaft is treated as a discrete system while the disk is modelled as a continuous system using the governing partial differential equation. Based on this governing equation, an equivalent inertial moment Mk*, which is the generalized dynamic force coupling between shaft and disk, is then derived. Analysis shows that only the disk modes of one nodal diameter contribute to the inertial moment, Mk*, and thus influence the natural frequencies of the rotor system. To determine the Mk*, the modal expansion method is employed and the governing partial differential equation of the disk is transformed to a set of decoupled forced vibration equations in the generalized coordinates. The Mk* are then calculated in terms of modal shapes, natural frequencies, and material and geometric parameters which can be found in the literature or can be obtained from experiments. Finally the Mk* are incorporated into the point transfer matrix. By so doing, the properties of quick computational speed and ease of use are retained and the complexity of solving partial differential equations is avoided. This allows the present procedure to be easily applied to practical engineering problems. This is especially true for multiple flexible disk rotor systems. As an example, three different cases for a simplified model of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) High Pressure Oxygen Turbo-Pump (HPOTP) rotor have been studied using this procedure. Some of the more interesting results obtained in this example study are enumerated below. 1.) Disk flexibility can introduce additional natural frequency(s) to a rotor system. 2.) Disk flexibility can cause shifting of some of the natural frequencies. 3.) As disk flexibility is increased, lower natural frequencies of the rotor system will be influenced. 4.) At certain rotor speeds, disk flexibility may cause the disappearance of a natural frequency. 5.) The axial position of the disk on the rotor shaft has a significant effect on the degree of this influence.

In this paper, the non-probabilistic steady-state dynamics of a dual-rotor system with parametric uncertainties under two-frequency excitations are investigated using the non-intrusive simplex form mathematical metamodel. The Lagrangian formulation is employed to derive the equations of motion (EOM) of the system. The simplex form metamodel without the distribution functions of the interval uncertainties is formulated in a non-intrusive way. In the multi-uncertain cases, strategies aimed at reducing the computational cost are incorporated. In numerical simulations for different interval parametric uncertainties, the special propagation mechanism is observed, which cannot be found in single rotor systems. Validations of the metamodel in terms of efficiency and accuracy are also carried out by comparisons with the scanning method. The results will be helpful to understand the dynamic behaviors of dual-rotor systems subject to uncertainties and provide guidance for robust design and analysis.

The influence on coupling vibrations and stability among shaft-torsion, disk-transverse and blade-bending of a rotor system with a mistuned blade's staggle angle was investigated analytically. A shaft-disk-blade system has been found existing two types of coupling vibrations, disk-blade (DB), and blade-blade (BB) modes when the shaft was assumed rigid. If the shaft's torsional flexibility was taken into account, an additional type of coupling modes, shaft-disk-blade (SDB), appeared. When an angle-mistuned blade existed, the blades periodicity was destroyed and it was found to change not only the natural frequencies but also the types of modes. Due to blade's mistune, the shaft torsion had to participate to balance such that DB modes vanished and replaced by SDB modes. A mistuned staggle angle was numerically found to alter the natural frequencies in an almost linear trend. At last, the rotational effects were found to merge frequency loci and eventually reached an instability point. Very interestingly, a mistuned blade diminished the possible instability caused by blade-dominating modes, which existed in a perfect and periodic rotor. In words, the rotor might benefit from a mistuned blade from the stability viewpoint. The shaft-dominating mode, yet, was unaffected by the mistune and retained a possible instability.

The gear mesh stiffnesses have been regarded as constants in most previous models of geared rotor-bearing systems. In this paper, a dynamic analysis of a spur geared rotor-bearing system with nonlinear gear mesh stiffness is presented. The nonlinear gear mesh stiffness is accounted for by bending, fillet-foundation and contact deflections of gear teeth. A finite element model of the geared rotor-bearing system is developed, the equations of motion are obtained by applying Lagrange’s equation, and the dynamic responses are computed by using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta numerical method. Numerical results indicate that the proposed gear mesh stiffness provides a realistic dynamic response for spur geared rotor-bearing system.

Self-actuating aircraft wings for in-flight deicing with minimal power requirements are proposed. Lightweight piezoelectric actuators are utilized to excite the wing structure to its natural frequencies to induce shear stresses on the surface of the wing. The shears are generated in such a way that they are sufficient to break the weak bond between the ice layer and the wing surface. A laminated composite cantilever plate is used for the modeling and analysis. Analytical model is developed to predict the natural frequencies and shear stresses on the surface of the plate and finite element modal analysis is carried out to verify the results. In addition, finite element model involving the ice deposited on the underlying structure is built. The dynamic responses of the structure to harmonic excitation to its first five natural frequencies are investigated. It is observed that significant amount of ice de-bonding from the substrate occurs in the third mode, or the second symmetric mode. Moreover, the energy requirements of the piezoelectric actuators to actuate an adaptive composite structure with given weight are evaluated.

Considering a rotor system with a slant crack, and using an equivalent line-spring model to simulate the slant crack of the rotor, the flexibility model of the slant-cracked rotor is derived. Then considered the geometric non-linearity and based on the Lagrange equations, the non-linear dimensionless differential equations of motion for the slant-cracked rotor are obtained. Further the non-linear dynamic responses of the single rotor system with a slant crack are discussed by the Galerkin method and the harmonic balance method. It’s detailedly studied that the angle, the depth and the position of the slant crack on the rotor all affect on the non-linear dynamic responses of the rotor system, and the conclusion is very significant to the design of the rotor system in the practical reference aspect.

Using Newmark-Hilber-Hughes-Taylor (Newmark-HHT) integration method, transient characteristics of the dual-rotor system with an intershaft bearing subjected to mass unbalance and base motions during start-up are illustrated. Rotary inertia, gyroscopic moment, shear deformation, mass unbalance and deterministic base motions are considered. Due to variable angular velocities, additional stiffness matrices associated with rotating angular accelerations are also introduced in the equations of motion. The effects of base motion parameters on the dynamic characteristics of the dual-rotor system are discussed, including base axial rotation, lateral rotations, and harmonic translations. The results show that base axial rotation significantly changes the transient critical speeds and resonant amplitudes of the dual-rotor system. In the case of base lateral rotation, the center of the orbit is no longer on the bearing centerline, but with a dynamic offset. When increasing the rotating speeds, the dynamic offset becomes greater. Unlike base lateral rotation, base harmonic translation doesn’t result in dynamic offset, but it amplifies response amplitudes over the entire range of rotating speed. In conclusion, it provides a flexible approach with high efficiency and good expandability to predict transient responses of dual-rotor systems under base motions, and to prevent dual-rotor systems against potential excessive vibration in the design phase.
