As one part of our work in ordered information systems, distribution reduction is studied in inconsistent ordered information systems (OISs). Some important properties on distribution reduction are studied and discussed. The dominance matrix is restated for reduction acquisition in dominance relations based information systems. Matrix algorithm for distribution reduction acquisition is stepped. And program is implemented by the algorithm. The approach provides an effective tool for the theoretical research and the applications for ordered information systems in practices. For more detailed and valid illustrations, cases are employed to explain and verify the algorithm and the program which shows the effectiveness of the algorithm in complicated information systems.

Shared understanding in an enterprise is necessary to permit a unifying framework serving as the basis of communication between people, interoperability between systems, and other system engineering benefits such as reusability, reliability, and specification. Bringing systems to work together is increasingly becoming essential for leveraging the Enterprise Information Systems (EIS) and reaching common goals. Currently, enterprises develop their systems independently with low consideration for the collaboration that systems can play with other systems. Certainly, semantic sharing represents the daunting barrier for making these systems work together through common shared understanding. In the last decade, theoretical research such as ontologies and context were suggested separately as formal support for treating the semantics-sharing problem. In order to resolve this main problem, we intend to pair up the two notions of Context and Ontologies. Typically, contextualization can be seen at the ontology level in order to enable the multiple views and multi-representation requirements. Hence, the formal representation of contextual ontologies should preserve adequate reasoning mechanisms. A machine understandable semantics and interpretation should be also given for information in a context, according to a specific system’s point of view. However, we perceived a growing ontology phobia in many enterprises. This fear is based on misunderstanding of ontologies’ advantages and lack of practical applications for theoretical proposals. The aim of this chapter is twofold. On one hand, it concentrates on studying the application of tightening together context and ontologies which can serve as formal background for reaching a suitable EIS environment. It invests in resolving the semantic-sharing problem between these systems. It focuses on suggesting a formalism for contextual ontologies based on a combination of Description Logics and Modal Logics. On the other hand, it investigates issues and arguments helping to overcome the ontology phobia. It shows with examples the usefulness of these contextual ontologies for resolving the semantic-sharing problem between some EIS.

In practice, some of information systems are based on dominance relations, and values of decision attribute are fuzzy. So, it is meaningful to study attribute reductions in ordered decision tables with fuzzy decision. In this paper, upper and lower approximation reductions are proposed in this kind of complicated decision table, respectively. Some important properties are discussed. The judgement theorems and discernibility matrices associated with two reductions are obtained from which the theory of attribute reductions is provided in ordered decision tables with fuzzy decision. Moreover, rough set approach to upper and lower approximation reductions is presented in ordered decision tables with fuzzy decision as well. An example illustrates the validity of the approach, and results show that it is an efficient tool for knowledge discovery in ordered decision tables with fuzzy decision.

Set-valued information systems are generalized models of single-valued information systems. Its semantic interpretation can be classified into two categories: disjunctive and conjunctive. We focus on the former in this paper. By introducing four types of dominance relations to the disjunctive set-valued information systems, we establish a dominance-based rough sets approach, which is mainly based on the substitution of the indiscernibility relation by the dominance relations. Furthermore, we develop a new approach to sorting for objects in disjunctive set-valued ordered information systems, which is based on the dominance class of an object induced by a dominance relation. Finally, we propose criterion reductions of disjunctive set-valued ordered information systems that eliminate only those information that are not essential from the ordering of objects. The approaches show how to simplify a disjunctive set-valued ordered information system. Throughout this paper, we establish in detail the interrelationships among the four types of dominance relations, which include corresponding dominance classes, rough sets approaches, sorting for objects and criterion reductions. These results give a kind of feasible approaches to intelligent decision making in disjunctive set-valued ordered information systems.

Summary: A unique model of accounting information resulted from theoretical research and several decades of personal experience in designing and developing accounting information systems. Application and design solutions of the model greatly contribute to the improvement and development of accounting information systems through the creation of accounting information for decision making, accounting analysis, planning and cost management, financial reporting, auditing, accounting information systems, and other areas that are directly related to the development of modern accounting. Model helps every user to perform tasks in a simpler way, more accurately, precisely and efficiently by providing accounting information and tools for realization of its functions. At the same time, the model represents a set of solutions based on a scientific understanding of information systems by setting realistic conditions for its further theoretical upgrade. Its main strength lies in the fact that an accountant ceases to be inferior to the information system but its superior. Based on the acquired knowledge, complete compatibility with international standards, trends and the most effective methods of business management is being achieved.

PurposeBelkin and Robertson (1976a) reflected on the ethical implications of theoretical research in information science and warned that there was potential for abuse of knowledge gained by undertaking such research and applying it to information systems. In particular, they identified the domains of advertising and political propaganda that posed particular problems. The purpose of this literature review is to revisit these ideas in the light of recent events in global information systems that demonstrate that their fears were justified.Design/methodology/approachThe authors revisit the theory in information science that Belkin and Robertson used to build their argument, together with the discussion on ethics that resulted from this work in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The authors then review recent literature in the field of information systems, specifically information retrieval, social media and recommendation systems that highlight the problems identified by Belkin and Robertson.FindingsInformation science theories have been used in conjunction with empirical evidence gathered from user interactions that have been detrimental to both individuals and society. It is argued in the paper that the information science and systems communities should find ways to return control to the user wherever possible, and the ways to achieve this are considered.Research limitations/implicationsThe ethical issues identified require a multidisciplinary approach with research in information science, computer science, information systems, business, sociology, psychology, journalism, government and politics, etc. required. This is too large a scope to deal with in a literature review, and we focus only on the design and implementation of information systems (Zimmer, 2008a) through an information science and information systems perspective.Practical implicationsThe authors argue that information systems such as search technologies, social media applications and recommendation systems should be designed with the recipient of the information in mind (Paisley and Parker, 1965), not the sender of that information.Social implicationsInformation systems designed ethically and with users in mind will go some way to addressing the ill effects typified by the problems for individuals and society evident in global information systems.Originality/valueThe authors synthesize the evidence from the literature to provide potential technological solutions to the ethical issues identified, with a set of recommendations to information systems designers and implementers.
