Theoretically, the characteristics matrix method is employed to investigate and compare the properties of the band gaps of the one-dimensional ternary and binary lossy photonic crystals which are composed of double-negative and double-positive materials. This study shows that by varying the angle of incidence, the band gaps for TM and TE waves behave differently in both ternary and binary lossy structures. The results demonstrate that, by increasing the angle of incidence for the TE wave, the width and the depth of zero-n¯, zero-μ, and Bragg gap increase in both ternary and binary structures. On the other hand, the enhancement of the angle of incidence for the TM wave contributes to reduction of the width and the depth of the zero-n¯ and Bragg gaps, and they finally disappear for incidence angles greater than 50° and 60° for the binary structure and 40° and 45° for the ternary structures, respectively. In addition, the details of the edges of the band gaps variations as a function of incidence angle for both structures are studied.

Abstract This study investigates the propagating of electromagnetic waves through a one-dimensional quasi-photonic crystal with the transfer matrix method. Our proposed structure consists of two types of double negative metamaterials, organized according to the Thue-Morse sequence law. The results show that changing the structure via quasi-periodic arrangements makes the outcome more varied than applying the absolute periodic arrangement. Given that, our desirable results of interest are more conveniently achieved. The structure completely stops-both s and p polarization at the lower frequencies, for all incidence angles. It also partially stops s and p polarization, at higher frequencies. Moreover, the achieved transmittance spectrum contains several omnidirectional band-gaps, which remain invariant with changes in the incidence angle. The oscillation of the transmittance values also becomes more intense at higher orders of the period number. This study could pave the way for optimizing of photonic crystal circuits, splitters, switches, etc.

Considered the model of the one-dimensional photonic crystals (1-D PCs) with double defects, the refractive indexes (n2’, n3’ and n2’’, n3’’) of the double defects were 2.0, 4.0 and 4.0, 2.0 respectively. With parameter n2=1.5, n3=2.5, by theoretical calculations with characteristic matrix method, the results shown that for a certain number (14 was taken) of layers of the 1-D PCs, when the double defects abutted, there was a defect band gap in the stop band gap, while when the double defects separated, there occurred two defect band gaps in the stop band gap; besides, with the separation of the two defects, the transmittance of the double defect band gaps decreased gradually. In addition, in this progress, the frequency range of the stop band gap has a little increase from 0.092 to 0.095.

Lipoarabinomannans, which exhibit a large spectrum of immunological activities, emerge as the major antigens of mycobacterial envelopes. The lipoarabinomannan structure is based on a phosphatidyl-myo-inositol anchor whose integrity has been shown to be crucial for lipoarabinomannan biological activity and particularly for presentation to CD4/CD8 double-negative αβT cells by CD1 molecules. In this report, an analytical approach was developed for high-resolution 31P-NMR analysis of native, i.e. multiacylated, lipoarabinomannans. The one-dimensional 31P spectrum of cellular lipoarabinomannans, from Mycobacterium bovis Bacillus Calmette–Guérin, exhibited four 31P resonances typifying four types of lipoarabinomannans. Two-dimensional 1H-31P heteronuclear multiple-quantum-correlation/homonuclear Hartmann–Hahn analysis of the native molecules showed that these four types of lipoarabinomannan differed in the number and localization of fatty acids (from 1 to 4) esterifying the anchor. Besides the three acylation sites previously described, i.e. positions 1 and 2 of glycerol and 6 of the mannosyl unit linked to the C-2 of myo-inositol, we demonstrate the existence of a fourth acylation position at the C-3 of myo-inositol. We report here the first structural study of native multiacylated lipoarabinomannans, establishing the structure of the intact phosphatidyl-myo-inositol anchor. Our findings would help gain more understanding of the molecular basis of lipoarabinomannan discrimination in the binding process to CD1 molecules.

By deducing the spherical elastic wave equation in theory, the concept of sphere-radial phononic crystal is proposed, and then the equations to determine the acoustic band structures is deduced. A numerical example is given for steel/nitrile rubber phononic crystal. The numerical simulation results suggest that the band gaps of sphere-radial phononic crystals do exist, which have better attenuation characteristics and practical application performance than the one-dimensional phononic crystals.

In this paper, a one-dimensional bi-stage phononic band gap (PBG) structure based on double local resonant effects is presented to reduce the torsional vibration for the first time. A unit cell of the bi-stage PBG structure is composed of two harmonic LR oscillators in the radial direction, distributed periodically along the shaft. A new method, combining the transfer matrix method and the lumped-mass method is proposed to study the torsional vibration band gaps of the double PBG-like shaft theoretically and proved by the finite element method. The results show that the mid-gap frequency of the bi-stage PBG structure shaft is lower than that in the one-stage PBG shaft and the relative width of the band gaps reaches 1.3 with the average attenuation of the vibration amplitude about 40dB.
