This paper presents ultrasonic burnishing as a mechanical surface treatment for improving the quality of rotating shafts. Ultrasonic burnishing is a modern method for finishing workpieces to produce a good surface quality. This process improves the surface quality and increases the surface hardness of the workpiece, and the surface roughness of the workpiece improves. As a result, wear resistance and fatigue life increase. Furthermore, these improvements are achieved without expensive equipment or long processing times. In this paper the influence of the ultraburnishing technique on the change in diameter and its effects on the out-of-roundness of rotating shafts are investigated. This paper also takes a look at the magnitudes of the improvement of the surface roughness as a result of using ultrasonic burnishing. Three different materials, aluminium, 34-CrNiMo6 tempering steel, and S355J2 structural steel, are examined. The results showed that ultrasonic burnishing is a treatment that improves the quality of components. Ultrasonic burnishing also has a reducing effect on the final diameter and out-of-roundness and increases the hardness of the workpiece. It can also be stated that the material of the workpiece does not have a significant effect on the magnitude of the reduced surface roughness values.

Whirling Electrical Discharge Texturing (WEDT) was developed to create microstructures. It was thought that textured surface with low surface roughness could reduce friction coefficient on the sliding parts. In this research, surface quality was studied to evaluate the quality of WEDT textured surface. Surface quality was evaluated in terms of the surface roughness and surface integrity which were characterized by microstructure, composition and residual stress of the textured surface. The value of Rp and Rv of textured surface after finishing with improved finishing method were obtained as expected for low surface roughness to reduce friction coefficient. In addition, it was clarified that microstructure and composition of textured surface after texturing with WEDT and finishing with lapping-film depend on feed speed. Furthermore, the compressive residual stress was presented on WEDT textured surface and depended on feed speed. It was confirmed that good surface quality of textured surface could be obtained by WEDT.

To improve the surface roughness of Copper-Nickel alloy (Cu-Ni alloy) and explore the effect of magnetic abrasive finishing on the surface hardness and hydrophobicity of Cu-Ni alloy, the spherical magnetic abrasives are prepared by atomizing rapid solidification method. The effects of various process parameters on the surface quality of Cu-Ni alloy are explored, and the optimal process parameters of magnetic abrasive finishing of Cu-Ni alloy are obtained. The Neodymium-Iron-Boron permanent magnetic pole is used to grind the workpiece with XK7136C CNC milling machine. Three dimensional profilometer, metallographic microscope, and digital Vickers hardness tester are used to analyze the surface morphology of the workpiece. The hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of the workpiece are measured by a contact angle goniometer. The effects of spindle speed, feeding rate, processing distance, and abrasive filling amount on the surface quality of workpiece are investigated by the orthogonal experiment and the single factor test. When the spindle speed is 1300 r/min, the feeding rate is 13 mm/min, the processing distance is 1.2 mm, and the abrasive filling amount is 2.0 g, the surface roughness of Cu-Ni alloy decreases from 0.212 to 0.023 μm and the hardness increases from 114 to 119.8 hv. Finally, the mirror effect of Cu-Ni alloy is achieved. When the optimal test parameters are used, the surface roughness of Cu-Ni alloy can be effectively reduced in a short time. The surface quality of the workpiece is improved, the surface hardness of the workpiece is affected to a certain extent, and the service life of the workpiece is prolonged.

AbstractIn this paper, acrylonitrile and hydroxypropyl acrylate are used as the binary polymerization monomers, and isooctane is used as the foaming agent to prepare high-temperature thermally expandable microcapsules. Analysis of the effect of blowing agent and crosslinking agent on the expansion properties of high-temperature thermally expandable microcapsules, the effects of foaming agent azodicarbonamide (ADCA) and micro-expansion capsule on the surface quality and foaming quality of foamed acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) products were investigated. The foamed product prepared by the high-temperature microcapsule has a good surface quality, the gloss is 52.3, the cell is not easily deformed, and the volume fraction is 4%; the foamed ABS/ADCA material has poor cell uniformity, the cell is easily deformed, the volume fraction is 6.5%, the surface quality is poor, and the gloss is only 8.7.

Semi-fixed abrasive is a novel abrasive. It has a ‘trap’ effect on the hard large grains that can prevent defect effectively on the surface of the workpiece which is caused by large grains. In this paper, some relevant experiments towards silicon wafers are carried out under the different processing parameters on the semi-fixed abrasive plates, and 180# SiC is used as large grains. The processed workpieces’ surface roughness Rv are measured. The experimental results show that the surface quality of wafer will be worse because of higher load and faster rotating velocity. And it can make a conclusion that the higher proportion of bond of the plate, the weaker of the ‘trap’ effect it has. Furthermore the wet environment is better than dry for the wafer surface in machining. The practice shows that the ‘trap’ effect is failure when the workpiece is machined by abrasive plate which is 4.5wt% proportion of bond in dry lapping.

Purpose For the laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) technology, the side surface quality is essentially important for industrial applicated parts, such as the inner flow parts. Contour is generally adopted at the parts’ outline to enhance the side surface quality. However, the side surface roughness (Ra) is still larger than 10 microns even with contour in previous studies. The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of contour process parameters, laser power and scanning velocity on the side surface quality of the AlSi10Mg sample. Design/methodology/approach Using L-PBF technology to manufacture AlSi10Mg samples under different contour process parameters, use a laser confocal microscope to capture the surface information of the samples, and obtain the surface roughness Ra and the maximum surface height Rz of each sample after analysis and processing. Findings The results show that the side surface roughness decreases with the increase of the laser power at the fixed scanning velocity of 1,000 mm/s, the side surface roughness Ra stays within the error range as the contour velocity increases. It is found that the Ra increases with the scanning velocity increasing and the greater the laser power with the greater Ra increases when the laser power of contour process parameters is 300 W, 350 W and 400 W. The Rz maintain growth with the contour scanning velocity increasing at constant laser power. The continuous uniform contour covers the pores in the molten pool of the sample edge and thus increase the density of the sample. Two mechanisms named “Active adhesion” and “Passive adhesion” cause sticky powder. Originality/value Formation of a uniform and even contour track is key to obtain the good side surface quality. The side surface quality is determined by the uniformity and stability of the contour track when the layer thickness is fixed. These research results can provide helpful guidance to improve the surface quality of L-PBF manufactured parts.

The surface roughness constitutes one of the most critical properties of wood and wood veneers for their extended utilization, affecting the bonding ability of the veneers with one another in the manufacturing of wood composites, the finishing, coating and preservation processes, and the appearance and texture of the material surface. In this research work, logs of five significant European hardwood species (oak, chestnut, ash, poplar, cherry) of Balkan origin were sliced into decorative veneers. Their surface roughness was examined by applying a stylus tracing method, on typical wood structure areas of each wood species, as well as around the areas of wood defects (knots, decay, annual rings irregularities, etc.), to compare them and assess the impact of the defects on the surface quality of veneers. The chestnut veneers presented the smoothest surfaces, while ash veneers, despite the higher density, recorded the highest roughness. In most of the cases, the roughness was found to be significantly lower around the defects, compared to the typical structure surfaces, probably due to lower porosity, higher density and the presence of tensile wood. The results reveal that the presence of defects does not affect the roughness of the veneers and increases neither the processing requirements of the veneer sheets before finishing, nor the respective production cost of veneers and the veneer-based wood panels. The high utilization prospects of the examined wood species in veneer production, even those bearing various defects, is highlighted.

An experimental investigation of the surface quality of the Poly-Jet 3D printing (PJ-3DP) process is presented. PJ-3DP is an additive manufacturing process, which uses jetted photopolymer droplets, which are immediately cured with ultraviolet lamps, to build physical models, layer-by-layer. This method is fast and accurate due to the mechanism it uses for the deposition of layers as well as the 16 microns of layer thickness used. Τo characterize the surface quality of PJ-3DP printed parts, an experiment was designed and the results were analyzed to identify the impact of the deposition angle and blade mechanism motion onto the surface roughness. First, linear regression models were extracted for the prediction of surface quality parameters, such as the average surface roughness (Ra) and the total height of the profile (Rt) in the X and Y directions. Then, a Feed Forward Back Propagation Neural Network (FFBP-NN) was proposed for increasing the prediction performance of the surface roughness parameters Ra and Rt. These two models were compared with the reported ones in the literature; it was revealed that both performed better, leading to more accurate surface roughness predictions, whilst the NN model resulted in the best predictions, in particular for the Ra parameter.

Semi bonded abrasive lapping is an effective ultra-precision lapping method. It can obtain good surface quality of workpiece in short time. This paper focused on the differences of processing features by comparing semi bonded abrasive lapping and loose abrasive lapping in several groups processing parameters. The results showed that the surface roughness of workpiece in semi bonded abrasive lapping was far superior to that of loose abrasive lapping in same processing parameters. And the MRR (material removal rate) of semi bonded abrasive lapping was slightly lower than that of loose abrasive lapping. For these features of semi bonded abrasive, a new processing flow would also be proposed in this paper.

The machining of free form surfaces is a current and important issue in die and mould industry. Beside the complex geometry, an accurate and productive machining and good surface quality are needed. The finishing milling carried out by a ball-end or toroid milling cutter defines the surface quality, which is characterized by the surface roughness and the tool path trace. The surface quality is defined by the properties of the milling cutter, the type of surface and its position, as well as the cutting parameters. This article focuses on the z-level milling of steep surfaces by 2.5D milling strategy. The importance of the different elements of the tool path is presented, the effect of cutting parameters is investigated, and a formula to predict the surface roughness is suggested.
