Aceclofenac (AC)/sulfobutyl ether-β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD) inclusion complex intercalated layered double hydroxides (LDHs) composite were prepared by swelling/restoration method. After swelling/restoration, thed-spacing of LDHs is expanded to 2.23 nm, which clearly demonstrates the successful intercalation of AC/SBE-β-CD into LDHs layer. AC/SBE-β-CD inclusion complex in the interlayer has monolayer arrangement based on thed-spacing of LDHs and torus thickness of SBE-β-CD. The AC release performances were also studied in buffer solutions with different pH values. The results show AC/SBE-β-CD intercalated LDHs not only enhance the dissolution profile of AC but also exhibit a controlled-release process, which indicates that the AC/SBE-β-CD-LDHs have a potential application in drug delivery agent.

Anionic clay matrix acting as drug controlled release system have shown in last years a great potential for delivery of bioactive molecules and chemical therapeutics. This organic-inorganic nanohybrid system is high efficient offering an excellent protection of intercalated compounds from degradation. Compared to other nanoparticles used in medical area, anionic clays type layered double hydroxides have found to be biocompatible according to toxicological studies. Ampicillin containing MgAlLDHs and ZnAlLDH samples have been prepared following two routes: anion-exchange procedure and reconstruction from calcined layered double hydroxides. Solid samples have been characterized by FTIR and SEM-EDX highlighting the alteration of pristine LDHs structure when the antibiotic is introduced in the interlayer gallery.

A controlled release composite has been prepared by intercalation of sodium paeonolsilate (PAS) into Mg/Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) with the molar ratio (M2+/M3+) of 2:1. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirm the intercalation of PAS into the galleries of LDH. The chemical composites of PAS-LDH were revealed by elemental analysis. Release tests of the PAS-LDH composite showed that no burst release phenomenon occurred at the beginning stage and a high release ratio of PAS (89.8%) was obtained, exhibiting controlled release behavior. Furthermore, the parabolic diffusion model was used to simulate the release kinetics of PAS from the LDH carrier, indicating that the intraparticle diffusion via ion-exchange is the rate-determining step in the release process. It is significance in this work for introducing the PAS-LDH composite to develop antifouling materials with long-term activity.

Curcumin (CR) is a natural antioxidant compound extracted from Curcuma longa (turmeric). Until now, researches related to the incorporation of CR into layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were focused only on hybrid structures based on a MgxAl-LDH matrix. Our studies were extended towards the incorporation of CR in another type of LDH-matrix (Zn3Al-LDH) which could have an even more prolific effect on the antioxidant activity due to the presence of Zn. Four CR-modified Zn3Al-LDH solids were synthesized, e.g., PZn3Al-CR(Aq), PZn3Al-CR(Et), RZn3Al-CR(Aq) and RZn3Al-CR(Et) (molar ratio CR/Al = 1/10, where P and R stand for the preparation method (P = precipitation, R = reconstruction), while (Aq) and (Et) indicate the type of CR solution, aqueous or ethanolic, respectively). The samples were characterized by XRD, Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transformed IR (ATR-FTIR) and diffuse reflectance (DR)-UV–Vis techniques and the CR-release was investigated in buffer solutions at different pH values (1, 2, 5, 7 and 8). XRD results indicated a layered structure for PZn3Al-CR(Aq), PZn3Al-CR(Et), RZn3Al-CR(Aq) impurified with ZnO, while RZn3Al-CR(Et) contained ZnO nano-particles as the main crystalline phase. For all samples, CR-release revealed a decreasing tendency towards the pH increase, and higher values were obtained for RZn3Al-CR(Et) and PZn3Al-CR(Et) (e.g., 45% and 25%, respectively at pH 1).
