270 Ross broiler chickens of twenty days old were housed in 18-floor pens in a completely randomized design with six treatment groups and three replicate groups and fifteen chicks per each pen. The treatment groups (1–6) consisted of 0, 10, 20, 30, 50, and 70 ppm of nanocide in drinking water, respectively. At 26 days of age, 3 chickens were selected randomly for echocardiography using a 7.5 MHz linear probe, and the left ventricular internal diameter at the end of diastole (LVIDd), left ventricular internal diameter at the end of systole (LVIDs), left ventricular fractional shortening (LVFS), ejection fraction (EF), stroke volume (SV), interventricular septum thickness at the end of systole (IVSTs), and interventricular septum thickness at the end of diastole (IVSTd) were evaluated. LVIDd and LVIDs in group six were of higher rate than other groups and showed statistically significant differences with groups two, three, and four (P<0.05). LVFS, percentage of EF, and IVSTd were minimum in group six and had significant difference with other groups (P<0.05). The results of this study showed that prescription of high dosage of nanocide leads to cardiovascular problems with decrease in myocardial contractility and increase in the internal diameter of left ventricle.

Abstract Background Maternal preeclampsia (PE) has been associated with an increased risk of a variety of congenital heart defects in the infant. Whether PE also confers an increased risk of subtle structural and functional cardiac deficits is unknown. Purpose We investigated whether left ventricular dimensions and systolic function differed among infants of mothers with PE, compared to infants born after uncomplicated pregnancies. Method Systematic transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) was performed in neonates included in a population-based study in the period 2016–2018 (n=25,000). TTE was preferably performed within 14 days of birth. Left ventricular (LV) posterior wall end-diastolic thickness (LVPWd), interventricular septum end-diastole thickness (IVSd), LV internal diameter in end-diastole and end-systole (LVIDd and LVIDs), LV ejection fraction (LVEF) and fractional shortening (FS) were assessed. Information on maternal PE (ICD-10 codes DO140–142 and DO159) was retrieved from an obstetric database. Using linear regression in a sample of echocardiograms, we compared the LV structure and function adjusted for maternal age; gestational age; sex; weight and length. Results In total, 447 infants were exposed to PE, and 7,178 were born to uncomplicated pregnancies (Table). In infants of PE mothers, we found significantly larger LVPWd and IVSd (0.18 mm, 95% CI [0.14; 0.22], p<0.001 and 0.06 mm, 95% CI [0.02; 0.10], p=0.001, resp.) and LVIDd as LVIDs were significantly smaller (−0.15 mm, 95% CI [−0.29; −0.01], p=0.032 and −0.16 mm 95% CI [−0.28; −0.04], p=0.009, resp.) compared to infants of non-PE mothers. We found no differences in systolic function. LV measures in PE and non-PE infants Parameter Infants of PE mothers, Infants of non-PE mothers, p-value Estimate* [95% CI] p-value mean [± SD] (n=447) mean [± SD] (n=7,178) Left Ventricular Posterior Wall in end-Diastole, LVPWd (mm) 2.20 [±0.58] 2.07 [±0.40] <0.001 0.18 [0.14; 0.22] <0.001 Interventricular Septum in end-Diastole, IVSd (mm) 2.53 [±0.52] 2.55 [±0.41] 0.562 0.06 [0.02; 0.10] 0.001 Left Ventricular Internal Diameter in end-Diastole, LVIDd (mm) 19.35 [±2.00] 20.10 [±1.41] <0.001 −0.15 [−0.29; −0.01] 0.032 Left Ventricular Internal Diameter in end-Diastole, LVIDs (mm) 13.13 [±1.43] 13.65 [±1.79] <0.001 −0.16 [−0.28; −0.04] 0.009 Fractional Shortening, FS (%) 32.10 [±4.07] 32.11 [±3.86] 0.937 0.26 [−0.11; 0.63] 0.168 Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction, LVEF (%) 63.19 [±5.61] 63.09 [±5.30] 0.690 0.34 [−0.17; 0.85] 0.192 *Adjusted for maternal age; gestational age; sex; weight and length. Conclusion In the largest population-based group of neonates to date, we showed that infants born to PE mothers compared to infants of non-PE mothers had significantly thicker left ventricular myocardium, and reduced left ventricular volumes. However, PE was not associated with altered systolic function. Our results might reflect an adaption of the fetal heart to the increased resistance in the placental arteries in PE mothers, and a secondary increased left ventricular afterload. Background: Animals eat to acquire the energy and building materials that they need to live and grow the nutrient required to achieve such, abound in phyto-materials. The synergistic, additive, or complementary immuno-modulatory effects of phytocomponents from A. senegalensis and Alium cepa were evaluated in this work. Methods: Seventy indigenously developed varieties of day-old broilers were divided in a completely randomized design(CRD) into 5 (n=14) treatment groups (T1-T5) treatments with 2 replicates per treatment. At the finisher level, 0.0, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 kg of the A. senegalensis-garlic (ASG) cocktail was added to the normal finisher diet. Results: Feed consumption tends to increase significantly (p≤0.05) with the increased level of ASG Cocktail. values recorded 1405±17.9 g, 1450±21.5 g, 1310±20.6 g, 1450±17.3 g, 1340±15.3g for T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5 respectively were recorded. There is a significant difference (p≤0.05) in the total protein (TP) at different inclusion levels with 0.5% having the highest value of 57.95±4.07 g/dl. The triglycerides and cholesterol levels decrease as the ASG inclusion level increases which shows the anticholesteremic potency of the blend. There are significant increases (p≤0.05) in the albumin and globulin concentrations as the level of ASG inclusion increased. However, while there is a significant increase (p≤0.05) in the aspartate transaminase along the concentration gradient, the reverse is the case with regards to alanine transaminase. A significant decrease (p≤0.05) in bilirubin concentration along the inclusion gradient (except in T5). There was a significant increase (p≤0.05) in body weight across the inclusion gradient except in T3. The Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) follows a regular pattern with a range of 0.51-0.53 except for the birds fed with 0.3% inclusion (T3) that recorded a higher (poor) value of 0.89. Conclusion: Supplementation with ASG cocktail improves the performance and the immune-competence of the bird at the finisher stage

BACKGROUND: Epicardial fat thickness (EFT) in adults and children has been related to the metabolic syndrome and other cardiovascular risk factors; however, scarce studies have evaluated it in infants of diabetic mothers (IDM) in whom, alterations in the thickness of the interventricular septum have been reported. This study compares the EFT in IDM versus infants of non-diabetic mothers (INDM) and its association with others echocardiographic parameters. METHODS: We performed a cross sectional study in 93 infants (64 IDM and 29 INDM). To evaluate EFT dimensions, an echocardiogram was performed within the first 24h of extrauterine life in both groups. In diabetic mothers, HbA1c was also determined. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in birth weight between the groups although gestational age was lower in IDM. The EFT (3.6 vs. 2.5 mm, p <  0.0001), the interventricular septum thickness (IVST) (6.2 vs. 5.2 mm, p <  0.0001) and the IVST / left ventricle posterior wall (1.3 vs. 1.1, p = 0.001) were higher in the IDM; while the left ventricular expulsion fraction [LVFE] (71.1 vs. 77.8; p <  0.0001) was lower than in the INDM, respectively. We found a positive correlation between EFT with IVST (r = 0.577; p = 0.0001), LVPW (r = 0.262; p = 0.011), IVST/LVPW index (r = 0.353; p = 0.001), and mitral integral early velocity (r = 0.313; p = 0.002), while a negative correlation with LVFE was observed (r = –0.376; p = 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: The EFT is higher in IDM than in INDM. It was positively related with echocardiographic parameters of left ventricular thickness and negatively with left ventricular ejection function.

FK506 Binding Proteins (FKBPs) are a family of cis-trans prolyl isomerases that bind rapamycin and FK506. FKBP12 and 12.6 interact with ryanodine receptors (RyR), homotetrameric transmembrane ion channels that regulate Ca2+ release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). FKBP12 interacts with RyR1 in skeletal muscle and FKBP12.6 interacts with RyR2 in cardiac muscle to regulate the Ca2+ leak properties of these channels. Recently it has been suggested that FKBP12 also plays a role in regulating RyR2 activity. Using mice with a cardiac specific deficiency in FKBP12, we analyzed the role of FKBP12 in cardiac function. We found that both male and female mice with a α-MyHC Cre/Lox mediated deficiency in FKBP12 in the heart (FKBP12 KD) developed a mild dilated cardiomyopathy, with enlarged left ventricular diameter both during systole and diastole, decreased ejection fraction and decreased fractional shortening. To elucidate the mechanism for these effects we assessed Ca2+ sparks in isolated cardiomyocytes. We found an increase in both Ca2+ spark frequency and spark amplitude in FKBP12 cardiac deficient mice without a change in spark duration. Despite a mild phenotype in adult mice, we found that approximately 25% of all pregnancies (26/106) in the FKBP12 deficient mice resulted in the mothers dying following the birth. Autopsies show that these cardiac specific FKBP12 deficient mice had increased heart weight and significantly dilated ventricles compared to female Cre mice. Our data suggest that a cardiac specific deficiency in FKBP12 leads to the development of pregnancy induced cardiomyopathy. Echocardiography on FKBP12 deficient mice one day after giving birth found that there was no significant difference in ejection fraction or fractional shortening compared to α-MyHC Cre control mice. FKBP12 deficient females, however, had larger hearts and 50% (2/4) displayed heart failure and died. In conclusion, we show that FKBP12 does indeed alter Ca2+ handling in the heart and that a loss of FKBP12 leads to the development of pregnancy induced cardiomyopathies in females.

The aim of this study was to estimate the impact and prevalence of left ventricular geometric alterations and systolic and diastolic dysfunction in hemodialysis patients, as well as the relationship with cardiac troponin as a marker of myocardial damage. Methods: 31 patients (pts), 19 males and 12 females, age 58.1±16.4 (26 on hemodialysis, 5 on peritoneal dialysis) and 31 healthy normal controls were enrolled. Echocardiography measurements were carried out according to the American Society of Echocardiography recommendations. Left ventricular mass was calculated, according to the Devereux formula and indexed to height and weight 2.7. Doppler echocardiography was performed to study diastolic function by measurements of isovolumetric relaxation period (IVRT), E wave deceleretion time (DTE) and E/A ratio. Cardiac troponin was measured by a third generation electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. Statistical analysis was performed using the t-test for between-group comparisons and the Pearson and Spearman’s tests to investigate correlations; p values of <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: Eccentric hypertrophy was the most frequent pattern (n=17; 55%), followed by normal cardiac geometry (n=7; 23%), and concentric hypertrophy (n=5; 16%). Only 6% of pts (n=2) showed concentric remodelling. Systolic dysfunction was present in terms of endocardial parameters in 3 pts (9%) (fractional shartening <25%, EF<50%), but in terms of midwall myocardial shortening in 51% (n=16). Diastolic dysfunction was present in 87% (n=27) with a pattern of impaired relaxation (in 5 without left ventricular hypertrophy). E/A was negatively correlated with age (r=-0.41, p=0.02); DTE was positively correlated with posterior wall thickness (r=0.36, p=0.05) and interventricular septum thickness (r=0.45, p=0.01); cardiac troponin was positively correlated with age (r=0.50, p=0.00), left ventricular mass (r=0.41, p=0.02), posterior wall thickness (r=0.41; p=0.02) and interventricular septum thickness (r=0.39, p=0.03) but not with diastolic dysfunction parameters. No significant difference was found in terms of duration of dialysis between patients with normal left ventricular geometry and those with left ventricular hypertrophy, but a significant difference in age was found (p=0.03). Pts with diastolic dysfunction had more frequent hypotensive episodes during dialysis (p <0.01). Conclusion: Impaired geometry and cardiac function is frequently observed in pts undergoing hemodialysis. Diastolic dysfuction is associated to a geometric pattern of left ventricular hypetrophy, although it can be an isolated initial manifestation of myocardial damage. Depressed midwall myocardial shortening can discriminate left ventricular dysfunction better than traditional endocardial systolic indexes.

The gain body weight and Spoilage of meat broiler which giving jaloh extract to combine with chromiumABSTRACT. A study was conducted on broiler chickens under heat stress to evaluate the effect of combined jaloh (Salix tetrasperma Roxb) extract with chromium mineral in the body weight, value of feed ratio conversion, and time to meat to become decomposed. Twenty four of 20-day old Cobb female broiler chickens were randomly assigned and divided to 4 treatment groups. Completely randomized design was used in this study. The treatments were as follows: 1) chickens given no heat stress and jaloh extract nor chromium (tCp); 2) chickens under heat stress without given jaloh extract nor chromium (Cp); 3) chickens under heat stress and given jaloh extract in 1.000 mg/lt drinking water (Cp+Ej); and 4) chickens under heat stress, given jaloh extract in 1.000 mg/lt drinking water, and chromium in 1.000 ug/lt drinking water (Cp+Ej+Cr). Heat stress given was 33 ± 1oC of cage temperature during 4 hours per day within 15 days. Jaloh extract and chromium treatments in drinking water were given at 2 hour before cage temperature reaching 33 ± 1oC and were stopped being given after 1 hour, when cage temperature back to room temperature. On the 16th day of the study chickens were measured before slaughtered. Samples obtained were chicken meat that taken from breast part (musculus pectoralis). The result suggested that either giving jaloh extract per se at the dose of 1.000 mg/lt in drinking water or combine it with chromium that given two hours before cage temperature reaching 33 ± 1oC, can prevent chickens from decreasing their body weight, decreasing value of feed ratio convertion, and extending time to meat to become decomposed.

Abstract BACKGROUND Hypothalamic obesity caused by childhood–onset craniopharyngioma results in long–term cardiovascular morbidity. Knowledge about clinical markers and risk factors is rare. PATIENTS AND METHODS A cross–sectional study on transthoracic echocardiographic parameters was performed to determine the associations with clinical and anthropometric parameters in 36 patients with childhood-onset adamantinomatous craniopharyngioma. RESULTS Body mass index (BMI) correlated with the thickness of interventricular septum in diastole (IVSd) (r=0.604, p<0.001) and left ventricular diastolic posterior wall in diastole (LVPWd) (r=0.460, p=0.011). Due to wide range of disease duration, 17 pediatric and 19 adult patients were analyzed separately. In the adult subgroup (age at study ≥18 years), BMI correlated with IVSd (r=0.707, p=0.003), LVPWd (r=0.592, p=0.020) and left ventricular internal diameter in diastole (LVIDd) (r=0.571, p=0.026). In the pediatric subgroup (age at study <18 years), no correlation between cardiac parameters and BMI was observed. Only LVIDd correlated with disease duration (r=0.645, p<0.001). All cardiac functions were within the normal range, indicating no association with severe functional impairments. CONCLUSIONS Cardiac remodeling in patients with childhood-onset craniopharyngioma correlates with the degree of hypothalamic obesity and disease duration. However, echocardiography has limited sensitivity in craniopharyngioma patients with obesity, so cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) should be considered as an alternative diagnostic approach for patients with craniopharyngioma and hypothalamic obesity.

Abstract Background Pregnancy is associated with profound physiologic alterations in the maternal cardiovascular system. This study aimed to investigate maternal cardiac performance during normal pregnancy by two-dimensional echocardiography parameters and various functional and structural alterations. Methods This was a cross-sectional study of 100 normal pregnant women who attended the antenatal clinic, and all participants had clinical history, physical examination, and 12-lead electrocardiogram. Two-dimensional, M-mode, and Doppler echocardiography was done. Echocardiographic parameters were compared with normal age-matched controls from previously published studies. Results The mean age of the study group was 23.35 ± 3.05 years, mean systolic blood pressure was 110.5 ± 8.69 mm Hg, and mean diastolic blood pressure was 71.6 ± 6.77 mm Hg. There was an increase in left atrial (LA) diameter, left ventricular end diastolic diameter, and interventricular septum (IVS) thickness as gestational age advanced. There was a gradual decrease in E-wave velocity, and E/A ratio increased during the second trimester and decreased during the third trimester. The E-wave deceleration time increased with gestational age There was no statistically significant difference between IVS thickness and E/A ratio (p = 1.000). Conclusion Cardiac chamber dimensions, LV wall thickness, and LA size, most indices of systolic function although within normal range, were significantly higher in pregnant Asian Indian women than in the controls. This study shows that the subtle reduction in myocardial compliance appears as an adaptive response to changes of preload, afterload, and LV geometry.

ABSTRACT On the basis of previous observations, endothelin 1 (ET-1) has been suggested as contributing to the pathogenesis of Chagasic cardiomyopathy. Therefore, ET-1flox/flox;α-MHC-Cre(+) mice in which the ET-1 gene was deleted from cardiac myocytes and ET-1flox/flox;Tie 2 Cre(+) mice in which the ET-1 gene was deleted from endothelial cells were infected with Trypanosoma cruzi. Genetic controls for these cell-specific ET-1 knockout mice were used. Ninety percentage of all mice survived acute infection with the Brazil strain and were evaluated 130 days postinfection. Inflammation and fibrosis were observed in all infected mice; however, fibrosis was reduced in ET-1flox/flox;α-MHC-Cre(+) mice. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging revealed that infection resulted in a significant increase in right ventricular internal diameter (RVID) in all mice except ET-1flox/flox;α-MHC-Cre(+) mice; i.e., RVID was not changed in infected ET-1flox/flox;α-MHC-Cre(+) mice. Echocardiography of the left ventricle demonstrated increased left ventricular end-diastolic diameter, reduced fractional shortening, and decreased relative wall thickness in infected mice. However, the magnitude of the changes was significantly less in ET-1flox/flox;α-MHC-Cre(+) mice compared to other groups. These data provide further evidence of a role for ET-1, particularly cardiac myocyte-derived ET-1, in the pathogenesis of chronic Chagasic cardiomyopathy.
