This paper deals with the fault-tolerant control (FTC) problem for a class of linear time-invariant systems with time-varying actuator faults and uncertainties. For more general consideration, the faults and uncertainties are supposed to depend on the states of systems and unknown constant bounds. For the sake of eliminating the effects of such state-dependent faults and uncertainties automatically, a switching control strategy which is formulated by a sign function is designed to configure controller based on system’s states. And some adjustable control parameters are updated via designing adaptive laws. Based on the information from switching function and the adaptive estimation mechanism, the robust adaptive controllers are constructed to compensate for the effects of faults and uncertainties. Through Lyapunov functions and adaptive schemes, the asymptotic stability of the resulting adaptive FTC uncertain system can be achieved. The effectiveness of the proposed design is illustrated via a rocket fairing structural-acoustic model.

This study focuses on the design of the robust fault-tolerant control (FTC) system based on adaptive observer for uncertain linear time invariant (LTI) systems. In order to improve robustness, rapidity, and accuracy of traditional fault estimation algorithm, an adaptive fault estimation algorithm (AFEA) using an augmented observer is presented. By utilizing a new fault estimator model, an improved AFEA based on linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique is proposed to increase the performance. Furthermore, an observer-based state feedback fault-tolerant control strategy is designed, which guarantees the stability and performance of the faulty system. Moreover, the adaptive observer and the fault-tolerant controller are designed separately, whose performance can be considered, respectively. Finally, simulation results of an aircraft application are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design methods.

Fault-tolerant control has drawn attention in recent years owning to its reliability and safe flight during missions. In this article, an active fault-tolerant control method is proposed to control a quadcopter in the presence of actuator faults and disturbances. Firstly, the dynamics of the quadcopter are presented. Secondly, a robust adaptive sliding mode Thau observer is presented to estimate the time-varying magnitudes of actuator faults. Thirdly, a fault-tolerant control scheme based on sliding mode control and reconfiguration technique is designed to maintain the quadcopter at the desired position despite the presence of faults. Unlike previous studies, the proposed method aims to integrate the fault diagnosis and a fault-tolerant control scheme into a single unit with total loss of actuator. Simulation results illustrate the efficiency of the suggested algorithm.

In this paper, a fault-tolerant control method is proposed for quadcopter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to account for system uncertainties and actuator faults. A mathematical model of the quadcopter UAV is first introduced when faults occur in actuators. A normal adaptive sliding mode control (NASMC) approach is proposed as a baseline controller to handle the chattering problem and system uncertainties, which does not require information of the upper bound. To improve the performance of the NASMC scheme, radial basis function neural networks are combined with an adaptive scheme to make a quick compensation in presence of system uncertainties and actuator faults. The Lyapunov theory is applied to verify the stability of the proposed methods. The effectiveness of modified ASMC algorithm is compared with that of NASMC using numerical examples under different faulty conditions.
