Recently, an innovative algorithm has been proposed by the authors for the identification of structural damage under unknown external excitations. However, identification accuracy of this proposed deterministic algorithm decreases under high level of measurement noise. A probabilistic approach is therefore proposed in this paper for damage identification considering measurement noise uncertainties. Based on the former deterministic algorithm, the statistical values of the identified structural parameters are estimated using the statistical theory and a damage index is defined. The probability of identified structural damage is further derived based on the reliability theory. The unknown external excitations to the structure are also identified by statistical evaluation. A numerical example of the identification of structural damage of a multistory shear-type building and its unknown excitation shows that the proposed probabilistic approach can accurately identify structural damage and the unknown excitations using only partial measurements of structural acceleration responses contaminated by intensive measurement noises.

In practical civil engineering, structural damage identification is difficult to implement due to the shortage of measured modal information and the influence of noise. Furthermore, typical damage identification methods generally rely on a precise Finite Element (FE) model of the monitored structure. Pointwise mass alterations of the structure can effectively improve the quantity and sensitivity of the measured data, while the data fusion methods can adequately utilize various kinds of data and identification results. This paper proposes a damage identification method that requires only approximate FE models and combines the advantages of pointwise mass additions and data fusion. First, an additional mass is placed at different positions throughout the structure to collect the dynamic response and obtain the corresponding modal information. The resulting relation between natural frequencies and the position of the added mass is sensitive to local damage, and it is thus utilized to form a new objective function based on the modal assurance criterion (MAC) and [Formula: see text]-based sparsity promotion. The proposed objective function is mostly insensitive to global structural parameters, but remains sensitive to local damage. Several approximate FE models are then established and separately used to identify the damage of the structure, and then the Dempster–Shafer method of data fusion is applied to fuse the results from all the approximate models. Finally, fractional data fusion is proposed to combine the results according to the parametric probability distribution of the approximate FE models, which allows the natural weight of each approximate model to be determined for the fusion process. Such an approach circumvents the need for a precise FE model, which is usually not easy to obtain in real application, and thus enhances the practical applicability of the proposed method, while maintaining the damage identification accuracy. The proposed approach is verified numerically and experimentally. Numerical simulations of a simply supported beam and a long-span bridge confirm that it can be used for damage identification, including a single damage and multiple damages, with a high accuracy. Finally, an experiment of a cantilever beam is successfully performed.

One of the important issues to conduct the damage detection of a structure using vibration-based damage detection (VBDD) is not only to detect the damage but also to locate and quantify the damage. In this paper a systematic way of damage assessment, including identification of damage location and damage quantification, is proposed by using output-only measurement. Four level of damage identification algorithms are proposed. First, to identify the damage occurrence, null-space and subspace damage index are used. The eigenvalue difference ratio is also discussed for detecting the damage. Second, to locate the damage, the change of mode shape slope ratio and the prediction error from response using singular spectrum analysis are used. Finally, to quantify the damage the RSSI-COV algorithm is used to identify the change of dynamic characteristics together with the model updating technique, the loss of stiffness can be identified. Experimental data collected from the bridge foundation scouring in hydraulic lab was used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed methods. The computation efficiency of each method is also discussed so as to accommodate the online damage detection.

The present research aims to develop an effective and applicable structural damage detection method. A damage identification approach using only the changes of measured natural frequencies is presented. The structural damage model is assumed to be associated with a reduction of a contribution to the element stiffness matrix equivalent to a scalar reduction of the material modulus. The computational technique used to identify the damage from the measured data is described. The performance of the proposed technique on numerically simulated real concrete girder bridge is evaluated using imposed damage scenarios. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method by employing experimental measured natural frequencies this technique is applied for the first time to a simply supported reinforced concrete beam statically loaded incrementally to failure. The results of the damage identification procedure show that the proposed method can accurately locate the damage and predict the extent of the damage using high-frequency (here beyond the 4th order) vibrational responses.

Mode shapes (MSs) have been extensively used to detect structural damage. This paper presents a new non-model-based damage identification method that uses measured MSs to identify damage in plates. A MS damage index (MSDI) is proposed to identify damage near regions with consistently high values of MSDIs associated with MSs of different modes. A MS of a pseudo-undamaged plate can be constructed for damage identification using a polynomial of a properly determined order that fits the corresponding MS of a damaged plate, if the associated undamaged plate is geometrically smooth and made of materials that have no stiffness and mass discontinuities. It is shown that comparing a MS of a damaged plate with that of a pseudo-undamaged plate is better for damage identification than with that of an undamaged plate. Effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method for identifying damage of different positions and areas are numerically investigated using different MSs; effects of crucial factors that determine effectiveness of the proposed method are also numerically investigated. Damage in the form of a machined thickness reduction area was introduced to an aluminum plate; it was successfully identified by the proposed method using measured MSs of the damaged plate.

ABSTRACTA novel procedure for damage identification of continuum structures is proposed, where both the location and the extent of structural damage in continuum structures can be correctly determined using only a limited amount of measurements of incomplete modal data. On the basis of the exact relationship between the changes of structural parameters and modal parameters, a computational technique based on direct iteration and directly using incomplete modal data is developed to determine damage in structure. Structural damage is assumed to be associated ith a proportional (scalar) reduction of the original element stiffness matrices, equivalent to a scalar reduction of the material modulus, which characterises at Gauss point level. Finally, numerical examples for plane stress problem and plate bending problem are utilised to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Damage identification and localization in railway bridges is a widely studied topic. Strain, displacement, or acceleration sensors installed on the bridge structure are normally used to detect changes in the global behavior of the structure, whereas approaches like ultra-sonic testing, acoustic emission, and magnetic inspection are used to check a small portion of structure near localized damage. The aim of this paper is to explore another perspective for monitoring the structural status of railway bridges, i.e., to detect structural damage from the dynamic response of the train transiting the bridge. This approach can successfully be implemented in the case of resonant bridges, thanks to the high level of acceleration generated, but its application becomes more challenging when the excitation frequencies due to train passage do not excite the first mode of vibration of the bridge. The paper investigates the feasibility of the method in the latter case, through numerical simulations of the complete train-track-bridge system. Accelerations on axleboxes and bogies are processed through suitable algorithms to detect differences arising when the train crosses a defective bridge or a healthy one. The results outline the main operational parameters affecting the method, the best placement for sensors, and the best frequency range to be considered in the signal processing, also addressing the issues that are related to track irregularity. Good performance can be achieved in the case of short bridges, but a few practical issues must be tackled before the method could be tested in practice.

In this paper, a new time-domain method for detecting structural local damage has been developed, which is based on the measured strain signals. The “pseudo strain energy density (PSED)” is defined and used to build two major damage indexes, the “average pseudo strain energy density” (APSED) and the “average pseudo strain energy density changing rate” (APSEDR). A probability and mathematical statistics technique is utilized to derive a standardized damage index. Afterwards, these indexes are used to establish the damage identification strategies for beam structures and plate structures respectively. Furthermore, the wavelet packet transform is used to pre-process the measured dynamic strain signals. Then, the effectivity of the new damage identification method is confirmed by numerical simulations. Finally, a laboratory beam model experiment is conducted to verify this method examine the feasibility and applicability of the new method.

The research to identify and locate the damage to the engineering structure mainly aimed at some simple structure forms before, such as beam and framework. Damage shows changes of local characteristics of the signal, while wavelet analysis can reflect local damage traits of the signal in time domain and frequency domain. For confirming the validity and applicability of structural damage identification methods, wavelet analysis is used to spatial structural damage detection. The wavelet analysis technique provides new ideas and methods of spatial steel structural damage detection. Based on the theory of wavelet singularity detection,with the injury signal of modal strain energy as structural damage index,the mixing of the modal strain energy and wavelet method to identify and locate the damage to the spatial structure is considered. The multiplicity of the bars and nodes can be taken into account, and take the destructive and nondestructive modal strain energy of Kiewitt-type reticulated shell with 40m span as an example of numerical simulation,the original damage signal and the damage signal after wavelet transformation is compared. The location of the declining stiffness identified by the maximum of wavelet coefficients,analyzed as signal by db1 wavelet,and calculate the graph relation between coefficients of the wavelets and the damage to the structure by discrete or continuous wavelet transform, and also check the accuracy degree of this method with every damage case. Finally,the conclusion is drawn that the modal strain energy and wavelet method to identify and locate the damage to the long span reticulated shell is practical, effective and accurate, that the present method as a reliable and practical way can be adopted to detect the single and several locations of damage in structures.
