The polyphenolic contents and the antioxidant activity of the skins and pulps of different grape cultivars were estimated using HPLC and DPPH antioxidant assay, respectively. The phenolics and flavonoids identified were quercetin, kaempferol, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, cinnamic acid, and (−)-epicatechin. The total phenolic contents were found to be the highest in the grape skin of Flouxa (>400 mg/100 g), followed by Campbell Early and Tamnara (>300 mg/100 g), and then by Red Globe and Ruby Seedless (>250 mg/100 g), and the total phenolic content was the lowest in Italia and Delaware (<60 mg/100 g). The antioxidant activities of the grape extracts varied from 12.5% (Ruby Seedless) to 60.2% (Hongiseul) for skins, whereas the antioxidant activities of the grape extracts varied from 35.4% (Campbell Early) to 84.5% (Hongiseul) for pulps. The grape pulps have stronger antioxidant activities than those of the grape skins. Our results suggest that the phenolic and flavonoid contents in extracts of grape skins and pulps showed statistically significant correlations with the free radical scavenging activity.

Grape skins contain a plenty of different flavonoids, most of them revealing significant antioxidant properties. In this contribution, a complex study is presented of grape skin ethanol extracts, prepared from grape skins of two vine grape varieties, Svatovavřinecké (St. Laurent) and Alibernet. Extracts were prepared from two different amounts of lyophilised grape skin powders using the pressurised fluid extraction (PFE). The antioxidant activity of the extracts was tested by EPR spectroscopy in Fenton system generating reactive radicals (•OH, O<sub<sup>–</sup>•, •R) followed by spin trapping technique. In addition, radical scavenging activity of the extracts was assessed applying 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (•DPPH) free radical and 2,2’-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) cation radical (ABTS•><sup>+></sup>) assays. Total phenolic content (TPC) of the individual extracts and their tristimulus colour values (CIE Lab) were evaluated, using an UV-VIS spectrophotometer. All the data obtained were subsequently correlated and discriminated, using the multivariate statistics, involving the canonical discriminant analysis, principal component analysis, and canonical correlation analysis. Results obtained indicated that PFE is a suitable extraction technique, only slightly influencing antioxidant ability as well as composition of the so-prepared extracts. The influence of extraction conditions on the entire monitored characteristics was insignificant.

In this study, it was investigated the total amounts of phenolic and flavonoid substances and antioxidant activities in different solvent extracts of Lonicera iberica M. Bieb. wild fruit. Total phenolic contents of the extracts were determined as equivalent to gallic acid using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, and total flavonoid contents as equivalent to quercetin by aluminium nitrate method. In addition, the antioxidant properties of the extracts were determined using free radical scavenging (DPPH) and reducing power (FRAP) methods. The amount of total phenolic substance of L. iberica fruits in hexane and methanol extracts was calculated as 30.96 ± 0.67 mg of GAE / g and 23.70 ± 1.56 mg of GAE / g, respectively. In addition, the amount of total flavonoid substance was calculated as 46.50 ± 8.54 mg of QE / g and 42.09 ± 2.58 mg of QE / g, respectively. It was determined that DPPH radical scavenging activity correlated with total phenolic and flavonoid amount of substance, and L. iberica had a strong antioxidant effect. It is predicted that our study will shed light on new researches, since it is the first study done with L. Iberica fruits in this field.

A comparative study of antioxidant properties on two varieties of Phyllanthus (Phyllanthus niruiri L. & Phyllanthus urinaria L. leaves) growing in Bangladesh was done in the present study. Five complimentary test methods namely DPPH free radical scavenging activity, reducing power assay, total antioxidant capacity, total phenolic and flavonoid contents determination were used for the evaluation of antioxidant properties of two species of Phyllanthus. In the present investigation for the evaluation of antioxidant activities the concentration is expressed by the ratio of crude sample per solvent volume instead of extract weight per solvent volume. Based on these concentrations the investigated P. niruri L. and P. urinaria L. leaves extracts exhibited significant results. At 2 mg/ml concentration DPPH radical scavenging capacity of the methanol extract of both the plants was found to show significant (>90%) activity which is comparable to Ascorbic acid and BHA. In case of reducing power tests for both the extract, the activity of P. urinaria is comparable to that of BHA and AA and that of P. niruiri is comparable to BHA. P. niruiri showed better antioxidant potential than that of P. urinaria based on the observed results of their corresponding methanol extract. The essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation of the flowers of Rhanterium adpressum Coss. & Durieu was analyzed using GC and GC-MS. The essential oil was very rich in monoterpene compounds. The major components identified were the monoterpene hydrocarbons: camphene (21.8%), myrcene (19.3%) and α-pinene (17.4%). Other compounds, including limonene, β-pinene and terpinol-4-ol, were present in low content (4–6%). The composition of the fatty acids in the lipid extract obtained from the flowers was also investigated by GC and GC-MS. The main fatty acids identified were palmitic (47.4%), oleic (12.9%) and stearic acids (10.6%). The total phenolic contents and the antioxidant activities were also evaluated for both extracts. The total phenolic contents were determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and the antioxidant activities were measured using three different assays: DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging activity, FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant potential) and a molybdenum assay. As a result of these tests, the lipid extract exhibited the highest antioxidant activities in comparison with the essential oil extract.

Objective. The aim of this work is to study and compare the antioxidant properties and phenolic contents of aqueous leaf extracts ofJuniperus thurifera,Juniperus oxycedrus,Juniperus Phoenicea,andTetraclinis articulatafrom Morocco.Methods. Antioxidant activities of the extracts were evaluated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical-scavenging ability, Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. Also the total phenolic and flavonoids contents of the extracts were determined spectrophotometrically.Results. All the extracts showed interesting antioxidant activities compared to the standard antioxidants (butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), quercetin, and Trolox). The aqueous extract ofJuniperus oxycedrusshowed the highest antioxidant activity as measured by DPPH, TEAC, and FRAP assays with IC50values of17.91±0.37 μg/mL,19.80±0.55 μg/mL, and24.23±0.07 μg/mL, respectively. The strong correlation observed between antioxidant capacities and their total phenolic contents indicated that phenolic compounds were a major contributor to antioxidant properties of these plants extracts.Conclusion. These results suggest that the aqueous extracts ofJuniperus thurifera,Juniperus oxycedrus,Juniperus phoenicea,andTetraclinis articulatacan constitute a promising new source of natural compounds with antioxidants ability.

Mulberry (Morus spp. L., Moraceae) fruits, leaves, bark and branch have been used in traditional medicine as diuretic, hypoglycemic and hypotensive. The mechanism of their effects is correlated with the content of active components. Objective of this work was to evaluate and compare antioxidant properties of different extracts of two Morus species growing in Serbia: Morus alba L. (white mulberry) and Morus nigra L. (black mulberry). Potential antioxidant activity, content of antioxidant compounds (phenolics and flavonoids) and radical scavenging capacity, tested by DPPH method, were evaluated. The phenolic and flavonoid composition of different Morus extracts was determined by the HPLC method. The extracts prepared from fruits, leaves and roots of M. alba and M. nigra exhibited different characteristics. The highest extraction yield was achieved by M. alba leaves extraction (23.40%). M. nigra roots extract shown the highest total phenolics (186.30 mg CAE/g), while highest total flavonoids content (67.37 mg RE/g) was determined for M. nigra leaves extracts. In addition, black mulberry leaves extracts with the highest antioxidant activity had the highest phenolic acids contents. The dominant phenolic components in the samples were rutin and chlorogenic acid. All investigated mulberry dry extracts shown high content of phenolic compounds and significant antioxidant activity. This work contributes to knowledge of the antioxidant properties of Morus species. The obtained results may be useful in the evaluation of new dietary supplements and food products.

In this study, total phenolic, flavonoid contents, antioxidant capacity, and phenolic compositions of Castanopsis phuthoensis and Castanopsis grandicicatricata (Fagaceae family) were investigated. It was found that bark extracts were rich of phenolic contents, whereas leaf extracts were abundant of flavonoids. The total phenolics varied from 11.20 to 35.47 mg gallic acid equivalent g-1 dry weight (DW), and the total flavonoids were from 2.24 to 12.55 mg rutin equivalent g-1 DW. The results of antioxidant activity showed that the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl) radical scavenging activity of the free phenolic extracts were higher than the bound phenolic extracts. Regarding the reducing power and β-carotene bleaching assays, the free phenolic extracts showed remarkably strong antioxidant capacity that were similar to the levels of the standard BHT (dibutyl hydroxytoluene) did. It could be concluded that free phenolic extracts were more effective in antioxidant activities than bound phenolic extracts. A highly significant correlation between phenolic contents and antioxidant activity in extracts were observed. By HPLC analysis, seven phenolic acids were detected including gallic, p-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, sinapic, p-coumaric, ellagic, and vanillin. Of which, gallic, ellagic, and sinapic acids were the most abundant compounds in the two species. The results suggest C. phuthoensis and C. grandicicatricata contain rich sources of natural antioxidants and phenolic compounds which are probably considered in pharmaceutical use.

This study attempted to investigate the functionality of <i>Dactylosiphon bullosus</i>, <i>Sporochnus radiciformis</i>, and <i>Zonaria diesingiana</i> extracts among algae as cosmetic ingredients. For this, antioxidant experiments were performed. <i>D. bullosus</i>, <i>S. radiciformis</i> and <i>Z. diesingiana</i> extracts were prepared with a 70% ethanol concentration to measure antioxidant activities. In terms of DPPH radical scavenging activity, <i>Z. diesingiana</i> was the highest with 94.20±0.28%. In ABTS radical scavenging activity, <i>Z. diesingiana</i> was the highest with 96.26±0.98%. In terms of the total phenolic contents and NO radical scavenging activity, <i>Z. diesingiana</i> was the highest with 47.19±2.07 mg gallic acid/g and 92.87±1.79%, respectively. The above results show that <i>Z. diesingiana</i> extract has the greatest antioxidant activity, confirming its potential as a cosmetic ingredient.

Through different extraction techniques, the potential of Centella asiatica as a natural source of antioxidant was investigated. The C. asiatica aqueous extracts were obtained via infusion, decoction and ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) techniques. The effects of different extraction techniques were studied on the extraction yield, total phenolic contents and antioxidant activity. The total phenolic contents of the extracts and antioxidant activity were examined using the Folin-Ciocalteu’s reagent and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity assay, respectively. Results indicated that the UAE exhibited the highest extraction yield, highest total phenolic contents, as well as highest antioxidant activity. The yield of the extracts increased in the order of infusion < decoction < UAE which were 18.2 %, 23.6% and 25.4 %, respectively. All extraction techniques had a significant effect (p <0.05) on the total phenolic contents and antioxidant activity of C. asiatica extracts. The total phenolic contents was ranged from 3.42 ± 0.030 to 8.32 ± 0.105 mg GAE/g dry extract while the antioxidant activity was in the range of 75 to 86 %. This study confirms that C. asiatica has the potential to be a good resource for the future development of natural antioxidant. In addition, extraction via UAE can be an ideal technique to obtain phytochemical-rich extracts from medicinal plants.

Being delicious and containing strong disease-fighting agents, berries represent an increasing proportion of fruits consumed nowadays in our diet. However, berries are highly perishable as fresh and, therefore, they are usually processed into various products to extend their shelf-life and availability throughout the year. Among the fruit-containing products, jam is one of the most common due to its nourishing properties, its low production costs, and its accessibility for a lengthy period. Rather than home preparation, consumers nowadays increasingly prefer to purchase commercial jams from markets due to its convenience. Although fresh berries have been extensively studied for their phenolic compounds, a limited number of studies investigating commercially manufactured jams have been conducted so far. Considering this, the objective of this study was to assess the total phenolic, flavonoid, and anthocyanin content and the antioxidant activity of five commonly consumed commercial berry jams (blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) and blackcurrant (Ribes nigrun) mixture, blackcurrant (Ribes nigrun), cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) and raspberry (Rubus idaeus)) collected from the market. Even though a possible loss of phenolics, anthocyanins, and a decrease of radical scavenging activity may occur during jam processing and subsequent storage, our data indicated that the selected commercial jams remained good sources of nutritive molecules with antioxidant properties based on the high levels of total phenolics, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and elevated antioxidant activities determined in this study. Additionally, the samples were characterized by GC-MS for their volatile profiles, and terpenes were found to be the dominating class covering more than 74% of volatile compounds in the jams.
