Explicit finite element programme LS-DYNA was used to simulate a long-span steel reticulated shell under blast loading to investigate the structural dynamic responses in this paper. The elaborate finite element model of the Kiewitt-8 single-layer reticulated shell with span of 40 m subjected to central blast loading was established and all the process from the detonation of the explosive charge to the demolition, including the propagation of the blast wave and its interaction with structure was reproduced. The peak overpressure from the numerical analysis was compared with empirical formulas to verify the credibility and applicability of numerical simulation for blast loading. The dynamic responses of the structure under blast loading with different TNT equivalent weights of explosive and rise-span ratios were obtained. In addition, the response types of Kiewitt-8 single-layer reticulated shell subjected to central explosive blast loading were defined.

Suspended dome is a reasonable and novel type of long-span hybrid spatial structures based upon single-layer spherical lattice shell and tensegrity system. Based upon the structural force-bearing characteristics, the combined finite element model of beam elements, truss elements and cable elements is set up. A method taking the maximum displacement on nodes under earthquake acceleration of each level as dynamic response representative parameter is proposed to study the dynamic stable ultimate capacity of suspended dome by application of the incremental dynamic analysis in combination with B-R kinetic criterion. Furthermore, considering suspended dome has the clear advantage over Single-Layer Spherical Lattice Shell for a structure with a long span and a small ratio of rise to span, the influences of factors such as structural parameters, geometric parameters, and different earthquake input are investigated on dynamic stability for a kiewitt-type suspended dome with a long span and a small ratio of rise to span. Finally of suspended dome some conclusions are obtained such as the initial defects can clearly reduce dynamic stable ultimate capacity, and since the rise-span ratio, pre-stressing level and cross section area are not monotonous as variety to the structural dynamic stability, they should be optimized to enhance or improve the structural dynamic stability, which can be rules for engineering design.

This study carries out numerical simulations to identify the magnitude of prestress force in a highway bridge by making use of the dynamic responses from moving vehicular loads. The prestressed bridges are modeled using four-node isoparametric flat shell element taking into account the transverse shearing deformation in the finite element model. The vehicle is modeled as a multiple degrees-of-freedom system. An approach based on dynamic response sensitivity-based finite element model updating is proposed to identify the elemental prestress force. The identified results are obtained iteratively with the penalty function method with regularization from the measured structural dynamic responses. A single-span prestressed Tee beam and two-span prestressed box-girder bridge are studied as two numerical examples. The effects of road surface roughness, measurement noise, and speed of moving vehicle on the identification results are investigated. Studies indicate that the proposed method is efficient and robust for prestress force identification. Good identified results can be obtained from several measured acceleration responses.

Abstract Finite Element Model Updating has for objective to increase the correlation between the experimental dynamic responses of a structure and the predictions from a model. Among different initial choices, these procedures need to establish a set of representative parameters to be updated in which some are in real error and some are not. It is therefore important to select the correct properties that have to be updated to ensure that no marginal corrections are introduced. In this paper the standard localization criteria are presented and a technique to separate the global localization criteria in family-based criteria for damped structures is introduced. The methods are analyzed and applied to both numerical and experimental examples; a clear enhancement of the results is noticed using the family-based criteria. A simple way to qualify the stability of a localization method to noise is presented.

Soft-ballistic sub-laminate (SBSL) made from ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers in [0/90] stacking sequence are the building block of a multi-layer soft-ballistic armor pack (SBAP, aka Soft Armor). A systematic study of the perforation dynamics of a single layer SBSL and several multi-layer SBAPs (2, 3, 4, 8, 16, 24, 32 layers) is presented for the first time in the literature. A previously validated finite element model of transverse impact on a single layer is used to study the perforation mechanics of multi-layer SBAPs with friction between individual layers. Following the classical definition of ballistic limit velocity, a minimum perforation velocity has been determined for free-standing single layer SBSL and multi-layer SBAPs. For the multi-layer SBAPs, complete perforations have been identified as progressive perforation of individual layers through the thickness. The minimum perforation velocities of multi-layer SBAPS is linear with the areal density for the eight (8) layer target and thicker. Large deformation behavior and perforation mechanics of the SBAPs is discussed in detail.

A hybrid finite element discrete mesoscopic approach is used to model the forming of composite parts using a unidirectional glass prepreg non-crimp fabric (NCF). The tensile behavior of the fabric is represented using 1-D beam elements, and the shearing behavior is captured using 2-D shell elements into an ABAQUS/Explicit finite element model via a user-defined material subroutine. The forming of a hemisphere is simulated using a finite element model of the fabric, and the results are compared to a thermostamped part as a demonstration of the capabilities of the used methodology. Forming simulations using a double-dome geometry, which has been used in an international benchmarking program, were then performed with the validated finite element model to explore the ability of the unidirectional fabric to accommodate the presence of interlaminate cabling.

In order to study the dynamic characteristics of a super-long-span cable-stayed bridge which is semi-floating system, the spatial finite element model of this cable-stayed bridge was established in ANSYS based on the finite element theory.Modal solution was conducted using subspace iteration method, and natural frequencies and vibration modes were obtained.The dynamic characteristics of this super-long-span cable-stayed bridge were then analyzed.Results showed that the super-long-span cable-stayed bridge of semi-floating system has long basic cycle, low natural frequencies, dense modes and intercoupling vibration modes.

This paper investigates the uncertainty quantification in structural dynamic problems with spatially random variation in material and damping parameters. Uncertain and locally varying material parameters are represented as stochastic field by means of the Karhunen–Loève (KL) expansion. The stiffness and damping properties of the structure are considered uncertain. Stochastic finite element of structural modal analysis is performed in which modal responses are represented using the generalized polynomial chaos (gPC) expansion. Knowing the KL expansions of the random parameters, the nonintrusive technique is employed on a set of random collocation points where the structure deterministic finite element model is executed to estimate the unknown coefficients of the polynomial chaos expansions. A numerical case study is presented for a cantilever beam with random Young's modulus involving spatial variation. The proportional damping constants are estimated from the experimental modal analysis. The expected value, standard deviation, and probability distribution of the random eigenfrequencies and the damping ratios are evaluated. The results show high accuracy compared to the Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations with 3000 realizations. It is also demonstrated that the eigenfrequencies and the damping ratios are equally affected from material uncertainties.

Modeling a periodic structure as a homogeneous continuum allows for an effective structural analysis. This approach represents a sandwich panel as a two-dimensional plate of equivalent stiffness. Known as the equivalent single-layer, the method is used here to analyze bifurcation buckling of three types of sandwich panels with unidirectional stiffeners in the core: truss-core, web-core and corrugated-core panels made of an isotropic material. The transverse shear stiffnesses of these panels can differ by several orders of magnitude, which cause incorrect buckling analysis when using the equivalent single-layer model with the first-order shear deformation theory. Analytical solution of the problem predicts critical buckling loads that feature infinite number of half-waves in the direction perpendicular to the stiffeners. Finite element model also predicts buckling modes that have non-physical, saw-tooth shape with infinite curvature at nodes. However, such unrealistic behavior is not observed when using detailed three-dimensional finite element models. The error in the prediction of the critical buckling load is up to 85% for the cases considered here. The correction of the equivalent single-layer model is proposed by modeling the thick-faces effect to ensure finite curvature. This is performed in the finite element setting by introducing an additional plate with tied deflections to the equivalent single-layer plate. The extra plate is represented with bending and transverse shear stiffness of the face plates. As a result, global buckling is predicted accurately. Guidelines are proposed to identify the sandwich panels where ordinary model is incorrect. Truss-core and web-core sandwich panels need the correction. Corrugated-core panels without a gap between plates in the core have smaller shear orthotropy and do not need the correction. Modeling the thick-faces effect ensures correct results for all cases considered in this study, and thus one should resort to this approach in case of uncertainty whether the ordinary equivalent single-layer model is valid.

In the case of catastrophic events, such as an emergency landing, the fuselage structure is demanded to absorb most of the impact energy preserving, at the same time, a survivable space for the passengers. Moreover, the increasing trend of using composites in the aerospace field is pushing the investigation on the passive safety capabilities of such structures in order to get compliance with regulations and crashworthiness requirements. This paper deals with the development of a numerical model, based on the explicit finite element (FE) method, aimed to investigate the energy absorption capability of a full-scale 95% composite made fuselage section of a civil aircraft. A vertical drop test, performed at the Italian Aerospace Research Centre (CIRA), carried out from a height of 14 feet so to achieve a ground contact velocity of 30 feet/s in according to the FAR/CS 25, has been used to assess the prediction capabilities of the developed FE method, allowing verifying the response under dynamic load condition and the energy absorption capabilities of the designed structure. An established finite element model could be used to define the reliable crashworthiness design strategy to improve the survival chance of the passengers in events such as the investigated one.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a novel method for analyzing wheel-rail (W-R) contact using thermo-mechanical measurements and study the effects of heating on the characteristics of W-R contact under different creepages. Design/methodology/approach This study developed an implicit-explicit finite element (FE) model which could solve both partial slip and full sliding problems by setting different angular velocities on the wheels. Based on the model, four material types under six different creepages were simulated. Findings The results showed that frictional heating significantly affected the residual stress distribution under large creepage conditions. As creepage increased, the temperature of the wheel tread and rail head rose and the peak value was located at the trailing edge of the contact patch. Originality/value The proposed FE model could reduce computational time and thus cost to about one-third of the amount commonly found in previous literature. Compared to other studies, these results are in good agreement and offer a reasonable alternative method for analyzing W-R contact under various conditions.
