Objective. Anecdotal evidence suggests that impression materials and techniques used in general dental practice for fixed partial dentures vary from those taught in dental schools. The aim of this survey was to integrate impression techniques evolved all over the years for fixed partial dentures and to know the techniques and materials which are used in the present day by the practitioners. Materials and Methods. A total of 1000 questionnaires were sent to various practitioners in India, out of which 807 questionnaires were filled. Results. The results showed that 84.8% of prosthodontists (65.56%, urban areas) use elastomeric impression materials as well as irreversible hydrocolloids and 15.2% use irreversible hydrocolloid only. Amongst other practitioners, 55.46% use irreversible hydrocolloid (45%, rural and semiurban areas) and 44.54% use elastomeric impression materials. Elastomeric impression technique practiced most commonly is putty reline with/without spacer (77.2%); other techniques are multiple-mix and monophase techniques. Conclusion. The ideal materials, technique, and armamentarium are required for the long-term success of the treatment for fixed partial denture. Also, if the ideal procedure is not followed, it will lead to a compromised fit of the final prosthesis and failure of the treatment.

ABSTRACT Aim The aim of this review is to summarize and discuss the available information concerning the connection between the tooth and implant in a fixed partial denture. Background Although implant-supported prosthesis (ISP) has substantial biological and biomechanical advantages, due to the extensive use of implant in partially edentulous patients, encounter to cases of obligatory connection between the tooth and implant is not rare. However, because of their differences, especially in support mechanism, long-term prognosis of this treatment method is a special debate in dental literature. Materials and methods The literature published over the past 25 years was searched through PubMed, Medline, Google and indexed journals (search terms: tooth implant connection, tooth implant-supported fixed partial denture, tooth implant splinting, implant and tooth). The most valuable and relevant articles were selected and analyzed. Results and discussion The existing studies reveal that there are certain conditions in which this method is applicable. The main advantage of the method based on literature reviewed is reducing the need to the removable prosthesis in patients that otherwise require it. The disadvantages of this connection, mainly due to different movement range of components under loading, reportedly will be minimized if some guidelines are followed. Clinical significance According to available studies, this literature review supports tooth-implant connection technique where indicated, with complete attention to prudent guidelines. Further researches preferably concentrating on new methods and also long-term longitudinal studies are certainly needed before this approach can be widely used. Abstract Aim To demonstrate the clinical feasibility of autoclaving certain silicone impression materials in order to avoid potential cross-contamination during handling, transport, and subsequent processing. Background Semicritical devices are recommended to be treated at least with high-level disinfectants or actually steam sterilized at 134°C. To date dental impressions have been disinfected rather than sterilized, so the question remains should they be sterilized before being sent to the dental laboratory? Case Descriptions Two identical impressions per case were made of metal-ceramic crown and fixed partial denture preparations on the same patient using addition type polyvinyl siloxane (PVS) impression materials (AFFINIS, R Coltene/ Whaledent AG, 9450 Altstatten, Switzerland) in different trays. The first impression (IMPx1) was cleaned and treated with an intermediate-level disinfectant (FD 322.Fast Disinfection Spray, Durr Dental, 74321 Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany). The second impression (IMPx2) was cleaned, treated with an intermediate-level disinfectant as with IMPx1, subjected to a computer tomography (CT) scan with a dimensional resolution of ±10 μm, steam sterilized, and then subjected to a second CT scan. The dimensional changes of the second impression after steam sterilization were calculated by comparing the overlay of the two CT scans and expressed by color coding of the impression graphics. After the second scan, the impression was sent to a dental laboratory to fabricate a metal-ceramic crown or metal-ceramic fixed partial denture restoration to the one produced from the first impression (IMPx1) subjected only to disinfection. This process was repeated for four clinical cases. Conclusion Impressions made with AFFINIS® silicone impression materials in a rigid reinforced polycarbonate impression tray or in a metal dual-arch tray can be autoclaved. The overall dimensional stability of the impressions and the quality of single crowns and small fixed partial dentures made using IMPx2 was not compromised. The maximum dimensional differences at the preparations of the nonautoclaved and the autoclaved impressions were found to be within acceptable limits of about 50–100 ìm. Clinical Significance Steam sterilization of AFFINIS® impressions is possible without adversely affecting dimensional change. In addition, clinicians can clearly indicate to the dental practice and laboratory personnel that sterilization of the impressions has been performed, cross-contamination is unlikely, and the impressions present no apparent health hazard during transport and subsequent processing. ABSTRACTSubpontic osseous hyperplasia (SOH) is an ectopic growth of bone occurring on the edentulous ridge beneath a fixed partial denture. The aim of this article is to present three patients with SOH with long-term follow-up and to make a current overview of the literature. Presented maxillary SOH is the second case in the dental literature. Intraorally the lesions were bone-hard and painless swellings in the subpontic space. Radiographically, the maxillary case was a nodular bone growth having similar radiodensity and trabeculation to the adjacent bone with a thin radiopaque border. Mandibular cases were bony growths, which were more radiopaque than the adjacent alveolar ridge. Follow-up radiographs revealed regression in two of the cases. Clinicians should take care not to cause the possible etiologies of SOH such as functional stresses and chronic irritation by the prosthetic treatments and be aware of SOH does not usually require treatment or a biopsy.

The purpose of this survey was to determine removable partial denture (RPD) framework design concepts, new materials, and digital technology that are currently being taught in the predoctoral RPD curriculums in the U.S. dental schools. A questionnaire including RPD framework design concepts, materials, and digital technology was created on Qualtrics. The link to the questionnaire was distributed by email in May 2018 to U.S. dental schools. Thirty-nine of the sixty-six schools responded, yielding a response rate of 59%. Most schools are utilizing textbooks by McCracken and/or Stewart as their primary reference (90%). Only a few schools teach incisal rest (24%) and intra-coronal retainers (8%) in the clinic. The majority of schools teach three or less clasp assembly variations for distal extension RPD scenarios and utilize altered cast impression techniques only for selective patient scenarios. Half of schools currently utilize digital technology in their RPD curriculum. Although twenty-five schools (69%) indicated that implant-assisted RPD (IARPD) is being taught in the curriculum, only nineteen of them teach IARPDs in the clinic. Half of schools are utilizing non-metal clasp denture (NMCD) in their curriculum; most of these school provide this treatment as immediate/interim partials or long-term interim partials. Many U.S. dental schools are simplifying RPD design concepts and principles that are being taught. More schools are introducing new concepts and materials such as IARPD and NMCDs while incorporating digital technology in their predoctoral RPD curriculum.

ABSTRACT It has been well documented that anterior ridge defects present in a patient are very difficult to treat properly. These defects have been treated with great amount of planning and complexities while using the conventional treatment approaches like removable or fixed prosthesis and options of implant. Though totally implant-supported restorations are very successful, dentists may resort to prescribe implant overdentures because of functional, anatomical economical or esthetic considerations. However, the loading conditions of the partially implant- supported overdenture may affect the long-term predictability of this type of restoration. The concept of the Andrew's bar system can be utilized. In some cases the Andrew's bar system is superior to the implant-supported fixed partial denture and other techniques for implant overdentures. The purpose of this article is to evaluate and describe the Andrew's bar system (a fixed removable partial denture), to treat a class III anterior ridge defect using natural teeth as abutments for its fixed component followed a removable component. The use of Andrew's bar system over implants offered the dentist another option in meeting patient's needs. Purpose: This clinical case describes a successful use of a non-resorbable membrane and mixture of autogenous particulated bone with anorganic bovine bone-derived mineral (ABBM) in a severe posterior mandible alveolar defect. Case report: A combined vertical and horizontal alveolar ridge augmentation was successfully achieved. Detailed clinical steps were described and demonstrated. The patient was rehabilitated with implant supported fixed partial denture with no pink ceramic. This two-staged procedure provides the amount of horizontal ridge width and vertical height to successfully place in the correct position the implants and achieve long term results. Conclusions: Multicenter, randomised clinical trials are necessary to compare this procedure with other potential clinical solutions.

ABSTRACTRetention is the phase of orthodontic treatment which maintains teeth in their orthodontically corrected positions, following the cessation of active orthodontic tooth movement. Development of resin-impregnated, fiber-reinforced composite materials has provided the potential to develop new approaches for stabilizing teeth and replacing teeth conservatively. This case report describes the rehabilitation of a patient with orthodontic and prosthetic problems. The long-term behavior of glass fibers splint must be evaluated in clinical studies. Two critical factors that influence the accuracy of an impression include the proper manipulation of the impression materials and the technique used to make the impression. The purpose of this study was to clinically evaluate the effect of different mixing techniques on the accuracy of vinyl polysiloxane (VPS) impressions by assessing metal framework fit of fixed partial restorations. The study included 92 consecutive patients diagnosed with partial edentulism and treated with fixed partial denture restorations. The mixing technique was one of the two following mixing methods: hand mixing technique (45 patients), with the putty material mixed according to the manufacturer’s instructions; or mechanical mixing technique (47 patients), with the putty material mixed by a Pentamix device. Under both mixing methods, vinyl polysiloxane was used as the impression material. Two impression techniques were randomly used by the operators (One/Two-stage putty –wash impression techniques). The accuracy of the metal framework restorations was tested clinically and radiologically, resulting in significant statistical difference (p = 0.04) between different mixing techniques. The mechanical mixing produced more accurate restorations (metal framework misfit only in 14.9% of patients vs. hand mixing 31.1%). Regarding the impression techniques, the two-stage impression technique was found to be significantly more accurate (p = 0.04), resulting in 14.6% ill-fitted metal frameworks vs. 31.8%, in the one-stage technique. It can be concluded that mechanical mixing yields more accurate impressions leading to more accurate restorations, especially when combined with two-stage impression technique.
