Maintenance is one of the central issues in operational activities, which involve any type of equipment. In this paper we have considered analysis, modeling, and scheduling of preventive maintenance operations for fuel dispensers in a chain of gas stations. A gas station company with more than 570 dispensers in more than 40 stations is considered and the maintenance problem is studied in detail. Operations research tools, including maintenance models and linear programming, were used to establish optimum schedules for preventive maintenance operations. Detailed cost analyses were carried out to determine feasibility of the proposed preventive maintenance schedules. Models and procedures presented in this paper could guide operation engineers and maintenance managers in solving similar problems for operational improvements.

Purpose Finding the optimal maintenance schedules is the primitive aim of preventive maintenance scheduling (PMS) problem dealing with the objectives of reliability, risk and cost. Most of the earlier works in the literature have focused on PMS with the objectives of leveling reserves/risk/cost independently. Nevertheless, very few publications in the current literature tackle the multi-objective PMS model with simultaneous optimization of reliability, and economic perspectives. Since, the PMS problem is highly nonlinear and complex in nature, an appropriate optimization technique is necessary to solve the problem in hand. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach The complexity of the PMS problem in power systems necessitates a simple and robust optimization tool. This paper employs the modern meta-heuristic algorithm, namely, Ant Lion Optimizer (ALO) to obtain the optimal maintenance schedules for the PMS problem. In order to extract best compromise solution in the multi-objective solution space (reliability, risk and cost), a fuzzy decision-making mechanism is incorporated with ALO (FDMALO) for solving PMS. Findings As a first attempt, the best feasible maintenance schedules are obtained for PMS problem using FDMALO in the multi-objective solution space. The statistical measures are computed for the test systems which are compared with various meta-heuristic algorithms. The applicability of the algorithm for PMS problem is validated through statistical t-test. The statistical comparison and the t-test results reveal the superiority of ALO in achieving improved solution quality. The numerical and statistical results are encouraging and indicate the viability of the proposed ALO technique. Originality/value As a maiden attempt, FDMALO is used to solve the multi-objective PMS problem. This paper fills the gap in the literature by solving the PMS problem in the multi-objective framework, with the improved quality of the statistical indices.

The objective of this research was to study a risk assessment of the rice combine harvester using FMEA technique implementation and suggested the procedures to maintain the parts of the rice combine harvester by analyzing the causes of risk assessment of FMEA. The FMEA was also applied to specify failure causes and effects that occurred in the rice harvester. The obtained data were calculated for a risk priority number (RPN) and then sorted to be a descending order. The high RPN part was analyzed for the causes and effects and then suggested a preventive maintenance in near future. The results revealed that the highest RPN of 576 was found when a chain surface was considered and also showed the maximum risk among the considered parts in the rice combine harvester. While, the lowest RPN of 144 was found when a rice sieve part was considered but this RPN was still higher than that of 100 RPN which was required to specify the preventive maintenance.

In the past decades we have witnessed a paradigm-shift from scarcity of data to abundance of data. Big data and data analytics have fundamentally reshaped many areas including operations research. In this paper, we discuss how to integrate data with the model-based analysis in a controlled way. Specifically, we consider techniques to quantify input uncertainty and the decision making under input uncertainty. Numerical experiments demonstrate that different ways in decision making may lead to significantly different outcomes in a maintenance problem.

In today world, decision-making has been converted into a vital issue for managers such that in some conditions, managers are encountered with some cases which correct decision- making guarantees the survival of company. Operations research is among the sciences which in direction for decision-making, helps the managers quantitatively and using of mathematical models which are called linear programming. In this paper, it is addressed to the significance and the role of operations Research in decision-making of managers and a definition about operations research is presented and two mathematical models are presented to help the decision-making of managers to provide customers orders with the least wastes and determination of human force and over-working.

The efficient decision-making process is the key criteria for evaluation of the managers and their future career in the enterprises. In the frame of operation research and operation analysis it is possible to use number of methods and techniques. However considering the up-to-date situation in the enterprises, linear programming is one of the most efficient techniques. It can be used by managers to solve problems considering any manufacturing or logistical problems. Application of the linear programming generally enables the managers to maximize the profit and minimize the costs on the other hand. This contribution presents the results of pilot research focused on the use of operations research methods in business. For this purpose we have contacted 10 companies which deal with the issue of operations research methods. The authors of the contribution primarily took into consideration the linear programming, particularly application and results achieved by this method. The analysis of software tools that can be used in the context of linear programming is also included in the contribution. In the next chapter of the contribution selected example of application of linear programming in a company is presented.

PT. Medan Tropical Canning is a company engaged in the production and export of aquaculture materials and marine catches, such as shrimp, fish, and so on. PT. Medan Tropical Canning manually monitors and maintains production machinery such as calculation of maintenance schedules and replacement of spare parts contained in production machinery. Frequent occurrences of errors in the calculation of maintenance scheduling and replacement of spare parts cause disruption of production activities. To deal with the problem, the authors propose a computerized information system using the STRADIS system development methodology. This information system is a program developed using the Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 programming language, database using Microsoft SQL Server 2000, and Business Objects Crystal Report 10 for report design. With the completion of the developed system, the data inputted will be processed with a database management system so that it can help monitor and maintain production machines and make reports faster and more accurate. The results of this computerized preventive maintenance information system are expected to benefit the company.
