A series of new di-, tri-, and tetranuclear Co(II) and Cu(II) complexes of three new diSchiff base ligands were synthesized by two different methods. The first method involved the synthesis of the three ligands from condensation reaction of 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (L′H2) with ethylenediamine (en), o-phenylenediamine (o-PD), or 4,5-dimethyl-1,2-phenylendiamine (DMPD) in a mole ratio of 2 : 1 followed by the reaction of the resulting Schiff bases ligands with Cu(II) or Co(II) ions in the presence of 2,2′-bipyridyl (L) to form the di- and trinuclear metal complexes. The second method involved the condensation of the copper complexLCu(II)L′(L = 2,2′-bipyridyl, L′ = 4-formylbenzene-1,2-bis(olate)) with en, o-PD, or DMPD in a mole ratio of 2 : 1, respectively, followed by reaction with CuCl2or Cu(ClO4)2to form di-, tri-, and tetranuclear copper (II) complexes, respectively. The structures of the ligands and metal complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, NMR, and FTIR spectra. The geometries of metal complexes were suggested according to elemental analysis, electronic spectra, thermal analyses, atomic absorption, and magnetic moments and conductivity measurements.

Anew series of two types of acyclic binuclear Schiff base complexes, prepared by the template condensation of N-aminopyrimidine and 2,3-butandion in the presence of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) in n-BuOH solution, were analyzed and characterized by elemental analyses, IR and electronic spectroscopy, conductivity and magnetic measurements. From the conductivity measurements, it is concluded that the complex of NiII is a 1:1 type of electrolyte. All the complexes have sub-normal magnetic moments in accordance with their binuclear nature. The thermal behaviour of the complexes was studied by thermogravimetry.

VO(IV), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes of the asymmetric Schiff base [(HOC6H3(OCH3)C(C6H5):N(CH2CH2)N:C(CH3)CH:C(C6H5)OH)], and their heteroleptic analogues with triphenyl phosphine and 2,2’-bipyridine have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, conductance, magnetic, infrared and electronic spectral measurements. The ligand is tetradentate coordinatingviathe imine N and enolic O atoms. The Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes adopt a four coordinate square planar geometry, the VO(IV) complex is five coordinate square-pyramidal and the heteroleptic complexes are 6-coordinate, octahedral. The assignment of geometry is collaborated by magnetic moments and electronic spectra measurements. The compounds are non-electrolyte in nitromethane and are magnetically dilute.

A new series of 10-membered tellurium containing tetraazamacrocyclic complexes, [ML1Cl2], [ML2Cl2] and [ML3Cl2], where [M=Zn(II), Cd(II), Hg(II); L1, L2and L3=10-membered tellurium containing tetraazamacrocyclic ligands] have been prepared via the template condensation of ethylenediamine and diaryltellurium dichlorides, R2TeCl2, (R=p-hydroxyphenyl, 3-methyl-4-hydroxyphenyl,p-methoxyphenyl) in the presence of metal chlorides. These complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, conductivity measurements, infrared, electronic absorption and proton magnetic resonance spectral studies. IR and PMR spectra confirm the formation of 10-membered tetraazamacrocycle skeleton and their tetradentate nature. An octahedral geometry has been assigned to all the metal complexes on the basis of various physicochemical studies.

A Schiff base ligand was synthesized by reacting 5-tert-butl-2-hydroxy-3-(3-phenylpent-3-yl) benzaldehyde and thiodihydrazide (2:1) and a series of metal complexes with this new ligand were synthesized by reaction with Cr (III), Mn (III), and Fe (III) metal salt in methanolic medium. The Schiff base ligand and its complexes have been characterized with the help of elemental analysis, conductance measurements, magnetic measurements and their structure configuration have been determined by various spectroscopic (electronic, IR,1H NMR,13C NMR, GCMS) techniques. Electronic and magnetic moments of the complexes indicate that the geometries of the metal centers were octahedral. IR spectral data suggest that ligand behaves as a tetradentate ligand with ONNO donor sequence towards the metal ion.

A series of oxovanadium(IV) complexes of the type [VO(mac)]SO4(where mac = tetraazamacrocyclic ligands derived from condensation of 4,4,4-trifluro-1-(2-furyl)-1,3-butanedione or 4,4,4-trifluro-1-(2-thenyl)-1,3-butanedione withp-phenylenediamine and their reaction withβ-diketones) have been prepared using oxometal ion of vanadium as kinetic template. These complexes have been ascertained by electrical conductance, magnetic moment, elemental analyses, infrared, e.s.r. and electronic spectral data. All the oxovanadium(IV) complexes are five-coordinate ones.

Schiff base diethyl 4,4-(pentane-2,4-diylidenebis(azanylylidene))benzoate (1) as a new ligand (L) was prepared by the reaction of acetylacetone with benzocaine in the ratio of 1 : 1. Two transition-metal complexes, [Ni(II)(LCl(HOEt))] (2) and [Zn(II)(LCl(HOEt))] (3), have been synthesized from metal salts with didentate Schiff base ligand (L) and characterized by elemental analyses, FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR UV-Vis spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility. The biological activity of the complexes was studied. In addition, the M06-2x density function theory method and the 6-31G(d) basic set were applied to determine the optimized structures of 1–3 and to determine their IR and 1H NMR, 13C NMR spectra theoretically. The data are in good agreement with the experimental results. The geometries of complexes 2 and 3 were determined to be square-planar for 2 and tetrahedral for 3.
