4,4′-Diaminobiphenyl reacts with 2,4-pentanedione in absolute ethanol in a molar ratio 1 : 2 to form mainly the product of [1 + 2] condensation, 4,4′-(biphenyl-4,4′-diyldinitrilo)dipentan-2-one (H2L). The Schiff base was used as tetradentate chelating ligand to coordinate CoII and NiII chlorides leading to complexes where the ratio of metal ligand was found to be 2 : 1 or 2 : 2. All the synthesized products were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared, electronic, and mass spectroscopy, 1H NMR, and DSC. The electrochemical behaviour of the ligand and its complexes in DMF is also investigated.

Pyrosulfonyldifluoride reacts with waterfree hydrazine in a molar ratio of 2 : 3 to give hydrazine -1,2-bis(sulfonylfluoride) in a low yield.. The reaction of N-fluorosulfonylamide and SOCl2 yields NH4⊕⊖ N(SO2F)2. This salt is converted to (C6H5)4P⊕⊖N(SO2F)2 in water by (C6H5)4PCl. (CH3)2NNH2 reacts with PSF3, PSF2Br, PSF2CH3 or PSF2C2H5 to yield the following compounds: (CH3)2NNHPSF2, (CH3)2NN (PSF2)2, (CH3)2NNHPSFCH3 and (CH3)2NNHPSFC2H5. The properties and the chemical behaviour of these substances are described. Results of ir-spectra, as well as 31P-, 19F- and 1H-nmr- and mass-spectra and elemental analysis characterize the compounds.

Three Schiff-base hydrazones (ONN ? donors) were prepared by condensation of 2-amino-4-hydrazino-6-methylpyrimidine with 2-hydroxyacetophenone 2-methoxybenzaldehyde and diacetyl to yield 2-OHAHP, 2-OMeBHPand DHP respectively. The structures of these ligands were elucidated by elemental analysis, UV, IR, 1H-NMR and mass spectra. The metal?ligand stability constants of Mn2+, Fe3+,Co2+,Ni2+,Cu2+, Zn2+,Cd2+,UO22+ and Th4+ chelates were determined potentiometrically in two different media (75%(v/v) dioxane?water and ethanol?water) at 283, 293, 303 and 313 K at an ionic strength of 0.05 M (KNO3). The thermodynamic parameters of the 1:1 and 1:2 complexes were evaluated and are discussed. The dissociation constants of 2-OHAHP, 2-OMeBHP and DHPligands and the stability constants of Co2+, Ni2 and Cu2+ with 2-OHAHP were determined spectrophotometrically in 75 % (v/v) dioxane?water.

Two new macrocyclic Schiff-base complexes of Cu(II) have been prepared by the template reaction of 2,6-bis (2-formylphenoxymethyl)pyridine with 1,2-bis(2′-aminophenoxy)benzene [L1] or with 1,2-bis(2′-aminophenoxy)-4-tert-butylbenzene [L2] in the presence of Cu(II) perchlorate. The amines used have low flexibility and therefore the formation of complexes was very difficult. The synthesised 23-membered, heptadentate N3O4 complexes were characterised by elemental analysis, IR, and FAB-mass spectroscopy.

Some novel organic compounds of the type: cis, cis-1,3,5-tris(X)cyclohexane, where X= –CONH(CH2)2NH2, –CONH(CH2)3NH2, –CONH(CH2)2NCH –C6H4OH, CONH(CH2)3NCHC6H4OH, which are expected to function as potential polydentate chelators have been synthesised from 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid through multi-steps reactions. 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid was reduced to cis, cis-1,3,5-tris(ethylcarboxylate)cyclohexane, which on reaction with excess of 1,2-diaminoethane and 1,2-diaminopropane afforded two new compounds. Condensation of the obtained derivatives with three equivalents of salicylaldehyde resulted the formation of two new Schiff base compounds. All the compounds were characterised by a combination of elemental analysis, mass, IR, UV-Vis, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy.

The complexes fac-[Re(CO)3Br{Ph2P(S)(CH2)nP(S)Ph2}] [1a, n = 1; 2a, n = 2; 3a, n = 3] and [Re2(CO)8Br2{μ- Ph2P(S)(CH2)nP(S)Ph2}] [1b, n = 1; 2b, n = 2; 3b, n = 3] have been prepared by the photochemical reaction of Re(CO)5Br with Ph2P(S)(CH2)nP(S)Ph2. The products have been characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectroscopy, FT-IR and 31 P-[1H]-NMR spectrometry. The results suggest cis-chelate bidentate coordination of the ligand in fac-1a - 3a and cis-bridging bidentate coordination of the ligand between two metals in 1b - 3b.

A new complexes of the type ML2 and M′L [where M=Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) and M′= Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II)]. L = 3-[(2-hydroxy-quinolin-3-ylmethylene)-amino]-2-phenyl-3H-quinazolin-4-one, (HQMAPQ) Schiff base have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, molar conductance, IR,1H NMR, UV-Visible and ESR data. The studies indicate the HQMAPQ acts as doubly monodentate bridge for metal(II) ions and form mononuclear complexes. The complexes Ni(II), Co(II) and Cu(II) complexes are found to be octahedral, where as Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) complexes are four coordinated with tetrahedral geometry. The synthesized ligand and its metal(II) complexes were screened for their antimicrobial activity.

Manganese(II) complexes of Schiff bases; 2-acetylthiophene-4‑phenylthiosemi-carbazone (AT-PTSC) and 2-furylmethylketone-4-phenylthiosemi-carbazone  (AF‑PTSC) derived from condensation of 2-acetylthiophene and 2-furylmethylketone (2-acetylfuran) each with 4-phenylthiosemicarbazide in (1:1 molar ratio) ethanol, have been synthesized. The Schiff bases and the Mn(II) complexes were characterized on the basis of melting point/decomposition temperature, solubility, magnetic susceptibility, infrared spectra, molar conductance measurements,  elemental and gravimetric  analyses. The Mn(II) complexes show moderate values of decomposition temperatures. The Schiff bases and the complexes were soluble in some common organic solvents. Infrared spectral data of the Schiff bases and their complexes, indicate coordination of the Schiff bases to the metal(II) ion via azomethine nitrogen. The effective magnetic moment of the Mn(II) complexes suggested an octahedral geometry. The molar conductance values of the complexes show that the complexes are electrolytes. The results of the elemental analysis of the ligands and their complexes are in good agreement with the calculated values, suggesting a 1:2 (metal-ligand) ratio. Antimicrobial screenings of the ligands and their complexes were conducted against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus,) and two gram-negative (Salmonella typhi, and Escherichia coli) bacteria specie. Also three fungi mainly (Candida albicans, Mucus indicus and Aspergillus flavus) were tested. The results showed that both the ligands and the complexes are active against the bacteria and the fungi specie. Keywords: Ligand, Schiff base, 4-phenylthiosemicarbazide, 2-acetylthiophene, 2-acetylfuran molar conductivity, magnetic susceptibility, elemental analysis.

New Schiff base (HL) ligand is prepared via condensation of isatins and amino acids in 1:1 molar ratio. Metal complexes are prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, electronic, infrared, and multinuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR, 13C NMR, and 119Sn NMR). The analytical data showed that the ligand acts as bidentate toward metal ions via azomethine nitrogen and carboxylate oxygen by a stoichiometric reaction of metal : ligand (1 : 2) to from metal complexes (Pb(II)(L)2 and Bu2Sn(L)2, where L is the Schiff base ligands of histidine and methionine). The conductivity values between 15 and 25 Ω−1cm2 mol−1 in DMF imply the presence of nonelectrolyte species. On the basis of the above spectral studies, distorted octahedral and tetrahedral geometry have been proposed for the resulting organotin(IV) and lead(II) complexes.
