Plectranthus barbatusis a medicinal plant used to treat a wide range of disorders including seizure. However, the anticonvulsant activity of this plant has not been studied in depth. We therefore sought to evaluate the anticonvulsant activity of a hydroalcoholic extract ofP. barbatusleaves on seizures induced by strychnine sulphate (2.0 mg/kg) and pilocarpine (600 mg/kg) in mice. The extract was administered orally at 1, 10, 30, and 100 mg/kg. We report that theP. barbatusextract had marked anticonvulsant activity against strychnine-induced convulsions, but was quite ineffective against pilocarpine-induced convulsions. Further experiments will be required to identify the active molecules(s) and their mechanism(s) of action.

Hypericum scruglii Bacch., Brullo & Salmeri is an endangered endemic plant of Sardinia, and the phloroglucinol compounds identified in this species have been reported to inhibit the activity of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Seed banks are a genetic repository that effectively preserve taxa of conservation interest, and they hold knowledge about the biology and germination ecophysiology of the taxa they preserve. The main goals of this study were to investigate the germination requirements for H. scruglii, to evaluate the seed viability after eight years of long-term conservation and to suggest an efficient protocol for germination. Seeds stored at –25 °C in the seed bank were tested at temperatures from 5 to 30 °C and 25/10 °C. Base temperature (Tb) and thermal time (θ50) for germination were estimated. Seeds of H. scruglii germinated over a wide range of temperatures, responding positively to high temperatures and 25/10 °C. Tb was estimated at 4.92 °C, and θ50 was estimated at 198.27 degree days. The high viability detected in seeds of H. scruglii allows us to suggest the use of seeds stored in a seed bank when fresh material for plant propagation is scarce. Our results provide new and useful baseline information for implementing conservation and multiplication strategies for this endangered medicinal plant.

: Persicaria hydropiper (L.) Delarbre (family Polygonacea), commonly known as Polygonum hydropiper, is a popular medicinal plant used in traditional medicine. The plant is indigenous to the tropical northern hemisphere and temperate zone including China, Bangladesh, India, and Japan. The plant is used in folk medicine for numerous ailments such as hemorrhoids, antifertility, diarrhea, and dyspepsia. Its medicinal usage in Unani, Ayurveda, Siddha, and other traditional medicine is well-recognized. So far, a wide range of active phytochemicals of this plant has been identified, such as flavonoids, sulphated flavonoids, terpenoids, anthraquinones, steroids, coumarin, simple phenolics, and others. Pharmacological data reported in the literature suggest that various parts of P. hydropiper exhibit antimicrobial, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, antidepressant, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, anticancer, and antifertility effects. The present review aim is to compile the coherently document research on the phytochemical, pharmacological, and biological activities of P. hydropiper from different parts of the globe.

Identification of names of plant curatives and substances in folk and fiction texts shows close interactions between man and the world, attitudes of people towards nature. Research in phytonyms and medicinal plant names proper is most essential for the understanding of a nation’s cultural heritage. The paper examines the lexeme балтырған in Bashkir discourse. Materials. The analyzed materials include linguistic dictionaries, folklore and fiction texts of the Machine Fund of the Bashkir Language, and etymological dictionaries of Altaic languages. Goals. The study aims at a comparative investigation of the lexeme балтырған ‘hogweed’. Results. The term proves a widespread phytonym in Bashkir discourse, which is attested by that it denotes a wide range of plant species in Bashkir and has parallels in other Turkic and Mongolic languages. The lexeme is included in academic, explanatory, dialectal, phrasal, and mythological dictionaries of the Bashkir language. The comparative analysis shows that baltyrγan ‘hogweed’ usually denotes a plant of the order Apiales, a medicinal herb. Baltyrγan~ baltirγana contains the initial bal / baltïr / baldïr with the meaning ‘green, young, fresh’.

В статье рассматриваются биологические и экологические особенности цистанхе, а также предусматривается этноботанические исследования, рекомендации по рациональному использованию. Выявлены некоторые значения Cistanchе, которое произрастает в Казахстане. Определена область использования в народной медицине цистанхе из семейства Orobanchaceae. В исследовании показана роль цистанхе, как растения с широким спектром фармакологических свойств. Проведен анализ маршрутно-рекогносцировочных исследований популяции цистанхе, определены распределение, запасы и объемы ежегодных заготовок по основным расположенным флористическим районам. Проведен расчет среднего суммарного объема заготовок сырья, собранных в Прибалхашье Алматинской области. В настоящее время в результате глобального потепления климатические условия меняются, и многие виды растений вымирают. Поэтому защита и эффективное использование растений является одной из самых актуальных проблем. Также важно изучить цистанхе, используемый в народной медицине как лекарственное растение. The article discusses the biological and ecological features of cistanche, as well as provides for ethnobotanical research, recommendations for rational use. Some values of Cistanche, which grows in Kazakhstan, are revealed. The scope of use in folk medicine of cistanha from the family Orobanchaceae is determined. The study shows the role of cistanche as a plant with a wide range of pharmacological properties. Conducted analysis of route-reconnaissance studies of cisterna populations, determined the distribution, stock and volumes of annual preparations for the main floristic areas. Calculated the average total volume of raw materials collected in the Balkhash region of Almaty region. As a result of global warming, climatic conditions are changing and many plant species are dying. Therefore, the protection and efficient use of plants is one of the most pressing problems. It is also important to study the tanks used in folk medicine as a medicinal plant.

The article provides an overview of the structural features of the natural populations of Humulus lupulus L. in the world and in Kazakhstan. Currently, the use in medicine of natural products, medicines and biologically active substances of plant origin is increasing. Significant parts of the medicinal raw materials are wild plants. The need for medicinal plant raw materials (medicinal plants) is not decreasing; the technology of its procurement and reproduction in natural conditions wants significant perfection. It is known that they have a milder, more complex effect on the human body and are used in the treatment of many chronic diseases. The growing anthropogenic impact on populations of valuable medicinal plants is decreasing their stocks of raw materials. In this regard, the study of biological characteristics and the development of scientifically based agricultural techniques for the cultivation of many medicinal plants are becoming relevant. Humulus lupulus L. (common hop) is a valuable medicinal plant. They are used as painkillers, sedatives, hypnotics for increased nervous irritability, sleep distur-bances, neuralgia, vegetovascular dystonia, mild coronary spasms, tachycardia, and in the early stages of hyper-tension. According to the classification of medicinal plant resources, Humulus lupulus L. is a plant with a wide range, but with a limited supply of raw materials. In places of growth of Humulus lupulus L. does not form large thickets [1]. Recently, a comprehensive approach has been applied in the study of natural plant populations, including ontomorphological and population-ecological studies. This makes it possible to objectively assess the state of the species in the cenosis and predict its future behavior. In this regard, a comprehensive study of the natural populations of Humulus lupulus L. is of great relevance. Hops (Humulus lupulus L.) is an important crop worldwide, known as the main flavor ingredient in beer. A diversified brewing industry requires a variety of flavors, superior technological properties and sustainable agro-nomy, which are the center of advanced molecular breeding efforts in hops. Hop breeders have been limited in their ability to create strains with desirable traits, however, due to unusual and unpredictable inheritance patterns and the associated non-Mendelian segregation of genetic markers [2]. The use of hops has recently been undergoing a new change, driven by a growing international preference for more intensely flavored beer, supported by the craft-brewing sector. This movement led to the introduction of much more hops at various stages of beer production and to an ever-growing search for new flavors. Some hop varieties have thus received particular attention, including several older typical hops mostly used to date, although an intensive search for new varieties dubbed "Green Gold" has also taken place. A large number of new exquisite varieties have been described and are increasingly appreciated in the market. Global hop growing areas have increased over the past 5 years, although total world beer production has declined over the same period, confirming the trend of using more hops per liter of beer. In addition, a wide range of pharmacological properties have been described for hops and its derivatives, namely antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antitumor properties, which are of great importance for the pharmaceutical industry. The bioactivity of beer can depend on the use of hops, which can become an important tool for brewers aiming to develop functional products. Taken together, the compounds isolated from Humulus lupulus L. have a wide range of biological activity, such as anti-inflammatory action, antimicrobial action, antioxidant action, antiproliferative effects, cytochrome P450 effects, glucose metabolism effects, hormonal effects, lipid effects and sedative / hypnotic effects. Therefore, the purpose of this Chapter is to describe the importance of hops in this new direction of beer production, market overview of hops, varieties, forms and methods of use, composition, value in bioactivity of beer and new discoveries in research hops [3].

Imperata cylindrica is a medicinal plant native to southwestern Asia and the tropical and subtropical zones. To date, 72 chemical constituents have been isolated and identified from I. cylindrica Among these compounds, saponins, flavonoids, phenols, and glycosides are the major constituents. Investigations of pharmacological activities of I. cylindrica revealed that this edible medicinal herb exhibits a wide range of therapeutic potential including immunomodulatory, antibacterial, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and liver protection activities both in vivo and in vitro. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of I. cylindrica studies until 2019. This article also intends to review advances in the botanical, phytochemical, and pharmacological studies and industrial applications of I. cylindrica, which will provide a useful bibliography for further investigations and applications of I. cylindrica in medicines and foods.

Plants are essential for human life. They help people breathe, provide food, clothing, medicine, and fuel, and also safeguard the environment. Plants can be loaded with medicinal properties and possess active substances that can be used for medical purposes. Several beneficial plant species are disappearing as a result of such factors as global warming, increasing population, professional secrecy, insufficient government support for research efforts, and the lack of public understanding of medicinal plants. It takes time to identify medicinal plants, therefore use professionals to assist you. For better benefit to humankind, a new method to identify and classify therapeutic plants must be developed. Because of the advanced technology in our day and age, medicinal plant identification and classification is an important subject of research in the field of image processing. Feature extraction and classification are the most important components in the process of identifying medicinal plants and classifying them. This research examines methods used in identifying and classifying medicinal plants as well as the medicinal properties of plants that have become increasingly relevant in the recent past. There is a vital importance placed on identifying the suitable medicinal plants in the creation of an ayurvedic medication. In order to identify a medicinal plant, look for these three features: leaf form, colour, and texture. From the both sides of the leaf, there are both deterministic and nondeterministic factors that identify the species. In this study, a combination of traits is designed that is said to identify a single tree the most effectively while minimising errors. The database is made up of scanned photos of both the front and back side of ayurvedic medicinal plant leaves, which is an ayurvedic medicinal plant identification database. In leaf identification, rates as high as 99% have been found when tested on a wide range of classifiers. Extending the prior work by using dried leaves and feature vectors results in identification using which identification rates of 94% are possible. Identification of the correct medicinal plants that goes in to the preparation of a medicine is very important in ayurvedic medicinal industry. The main features required to identify a medicinal plant is its leaf shape, colour and texture. Colour and texture from both sides of the leaf contain deterministic parameters to identify the species. This paper explores feature vectors from both the front and back side of a green leaf along with morphological features to arrive at a unique optimum combination of features that maximizes the identification rate. A database of medicinal plant leaves is created from scanned images of front and back side of leaves of commonly used ayurvedic medicinal plants. The leaves are classified based on the unique feature combination. Identification rates up to 99% have been obtained when tested over a wide spectrum of classifiers. The above work has been extended to include identification by dry leaves and a combination of feature vectors is obtained, using which, identification rates exceeding 94% have been achieved.

Nepetae catariae herba is used in the Russian Federation as spice. The chemical compounds of herb have been studied. This plant has been introduced into the culture. There are its domestic varieties. The fruits of the plant accumulate up to 25% of fatty oil and contain specific laballenic acid, which has a wide range of antimicrobial and fungicidal actions. The yield of fruit crops is 5–6 c/ha.The aim is to study some criteria for the standardization of the quality of Nepetae catariae herb as a new medicinal plant raw material.Materials and methods. The studied fruits are from the biological collection of Federal State Budgetary Institution of All – Russia Research Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants. Binocular magnifier brand MBS-10 and Axioplan 2 imaging microscope by Carl Zeiss were used. The sample preparation was carried out according to the State Pharmacopoeia of the Russian Federation (XIV edition). Anatomical diagnostic features were studied in powder and cross section with staining reagents for the presence of some biologically active substances. Qualitative reactions were carried out with water and alcohol-water extracts from the fruits. The content of the lipid complex according to pharmacopoeia monograph 2.5.0035.15 has been determined.Results. A description of the external and diagnostic anatomical features is given. The main groups of biologically active substances and the content of the lipid complex in a possible new material – the fruits of Nepeta cataria – have been identified.Conclusion. The description of the external features of the fruit has been specified. For the first time, crushed fruits have been characterized. It has been established that the morphology of endocarp cells and seed embryo cells are best preserved in a mellow fruit. Physico-optical properties of cellular structures and the ability for basic microchemical reactions are preserved in all zones of pericarp and seeds. Qualitative reactions showed the presence of the following components in the fruits: saponins, flavonoids and a lipid complex. A dispersion composition has been studied. The yield of the lipid complex and its appearance have been determined. Fruits can be used as promising fat-oil raw materials. The results of the study can be used in drafting Pharmacovigilance Reference Document considering a promising type of medicinal plant raw material on the basis of Nepetae catariae herba fruits.
