The covariant canonical analysis for Yang-Mills theory expressed as a BF-like action is performed. We study a BF-like action, that in spite of being the coupling of two topological terms, yield, on shell to Yang-Mills action. In addition, by using the results obtained in the covariant canonical approach we study the symmetries of the action, in particular we calculate its energy-momentum tensor obtaining the same tensor found for Yang-Mills theory; then we confirm those results by using Noether's theorem.

Abstract The often discussed question concerning the energy-momentum tensor of the electromagnetic field in matter can be answered using NOETHER'S theorem. The separation of the electromagnetic system from the mechanical system introduced here leads to the asymmetric expression for the energy momentum tensor. From covariance with respect to scale transformations one further concludes that the trace of the energy-momentum tensor vanishes.

Starting from the known representation of the Kac–Moody algebra in terms of the coordinates and momenta, we extend it to the representation of the super Kac–Moody and super Virasoro algebras. Then we use general canonical method to construct an action invariant under local gauge symmetries, where components of the super energy–momentum tensor L± and G± play the role of the diffeomorphisms and supersymmetry generators respectively. We obtain covariant extension of WZNW theory with respect to local supersymmetry as well as explicit expressions for gauge transformations.

We present a natural formulation for constructing Yang-Mills theories from the incorporation of non-linearities to the Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism. Our formulation is strongly based on Noether's Theorem and aims to show how the introduction of non-linearities can turn a global invariance into a local symmetry as the more general Yang-Mills type of symmetry.
