A novel compact MIMO antenna for personal digital assistant (PDA) and pad computer is proposed. The proposed antenna is composed by two multipatch monopole antennas which are placed 90° apart for orthogonal radiation. To strengthen the isolation, a T-shaped ground branch with proper dimension is used to generate an additional coupling path to lower the mutual coupling (below −15 dB), especially at GSM850/900 band. The proposed MIMO antenna is fabricated and tested, both the simulated and the measured results are presented, and some parametric studies are also demonstrated. In addition, there are some advantages about the proposed antenna such as simple structure, easy fabrication, and low cost.

AbstractA printed multiband Multi-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna is proposed in this paper. This MIMO antenna system comprises two symmetric printed monopole antennas. Each antenna element consists of multiple bend lines, producing four resonant modes and covering the GSM900, PCS, LTE2300, and 5G bands. Simulated and measured results prove that the proposed MIMO antenna can be applied to traditional 2G, 3G, 4G, and present 5G mobile communication. By etching four inverted L-shaped grooves on its ground plate, mutual coupling between the adjacent antenna elements has been suppressed. This makes the |S21| at all four resonant modes is lower than −40 dB. In addition, its low coupling mechanism has been analyzed by surface current distribution. The designed multiband MIMO antenna provides an idea of reference to realize low mutual coupling between antenna elements, which is also realizable in infrared or optical regimes with appropriate designs.

A folded dual-band monopole antenna for 2.45 GHz and 5.8 GHz RFID tag applications is proposed in the present paper. It is formed by two folded monopole antennas for reducing the geometric size of the tag. One of them operates at 2.45 GHz, and the other operates at 5.8 GHz. The input impedance of the proposed antenna is designed to be conjugate matched to the chip impedance for the maximum power transfer. This antenna is modeled, analyzed, and optimized by HFSS. The simulation results demonstrate that the performances of the proposed antenna can satisfy the requirements of RFID system. The characteristics of the proposed antenna are simple structure, low cost, and small sizes.

AbstractA Triple-band Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna for 5G mobile terminal applications is proposed in this paper. The design comprises four-port/two resonators, each having two concentric circular slot ring radiators etched on a ground plane of size 50 mm ${\times}$ 50 mm. The antenna is fed by perpendicularly arranged 50 Ω microstrip line feeds on the top layer. Decoupling techniques were used to suppress mutual coupling between the two resonators. The perpendicular arrangement of the feed lines and port reduces mutual coupling between the two ports and increases isolation. The antenna operates in multiple bands: 3.35–3.69 GHz, 24–28 GHz, and 37–40 GHz frequency range with central frequencies at 3.5 GHz, 26 GHz, and 38 GHz, respectively allocated for 5G. The antenna provides a gain of 2.7–7.8 dB and a radiation efficiency of 0.49–0.85 in the operating bands. Diversity performance is studied in terms of the Envelop Correlation Coefficient (ECC), Diversity Gain (DG), and Total Active Reflection Coefficient (TARC) were found to be less than 0.01, greater than 9.99 dB, and less than −10 dB respectively. The proposed antenna offers good S-parameters, voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR), TARC, radiation pattern, high gain, and low ECC. The antenna was fabricated and tested. The measured results and simulated results are in good agreement. It possesses sufficient potential for 5G mobile terminal and smart wearable applications.

Abstract The in-depth exploration in the future 5G technology symbolizes a revolution in technology for antenna designers to encounter the all time increasing need as well as demand for higher data rate wireless communications. The paper gives out an exhaustive review of the evolution and characteristics of the 5G spectrum allocations, the MIMO antenna design with regard to mutual coupling reduction techniques and safer user applications. It precisely covers almost all the aspects of 5G which mainly include the types of antenna designs and their performance parameters related to MIMO design. The paper also presents a brief description of massive MIMO technology for base station applications. The main aim of the paper is: (1) to emphasize the frequencies allocated for the 5G including sub-6 Ghz and mm-wave bands; (2) to underline the suitable antenna designs for MIMO applications for mobile devices and base stations; (3) to highlight the mutual coupling effects in MIMO designs and its reduction techniques; (4) to consider the gaps in the literature and the challenges for reducing SAR effects for the safety of the users. This review paper has been an attempt to explore the evolution of 5G bands and antenna designs for 5G applications, comparison based on the literature, and the techniques implemented for enhancing the MIMO antenna performances.

The conventional magnetoelastic resonant sensor suffers from a low detecting sensitivity problem. In this study, an hourglass-shaped magnetoelastic resonant sensor was proposed, analyzed, fabricated, and tested. The hourglass-shaped magnetoelastic resonant sensor was composed of an hourglass and a narrow ribbon in the middle. The hourglass and the narrow ribbon increased the detection sensitivity by reducing the connecting stress. The resonant frequency of the sensor was investigated by the finite element method. The proposed sensor was fabricated and experiments were carried out. The tested resonance frequency agreed well with the simulated one. The maximum trust sensitivity of the proposed sensor was 37,100 Hz/strain. The power supply and signal transmission of the proposed sensor were fulfilled via magnetic field in a wireless and passive way due to the magnetostrictive effect. Parametric studies were carried out to investigate the influence of the hourglass shape on the resonant frequency and the output voltage. The hourglass-shaped magnetoelastic resonant sensor shows advantages of high sensitivity, a simple structure, easy fabrication, passiveness, remoteness, and low cost.

Based on transferring energy from multiple pump beams into one Stokes beam using Brillouin amplification, a serial coherent laser beam combination scheme is presented, which has many advantages, such as, simple structure, low cost, ease of adjustment, higher load capability, scalable easily, etc. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that the combination of several beams using this method is theoretically possible. But in practice, the amplification of high power Stokes beam is a key problem to solve. In this paper, the amplification of Stokes beam whose power is higher than the pump beam is first studied and proved experimentally. Coupling the two laser beams by this method is proved experimentally, and the coupling efficiency reaches more than 80%. Then the feasibility of multiple beams combination based on Brillouin amplification is analyzed and tested theoretically.
