The hardware structure of a processing element used for optimization of an investment strategy for financial markets is presented. It is shown how this processing element can be multiply implemented on the massively parallel FPGA-machine RIVYERA. This leads to a speedup of a factor of about 17,000 in comparison to one single high-performance PC, while saving more than 99% of the consumed energy. Furthermore, it is shown for a special security and different time periods that the optimized investment strategy delivers an outperformance between 2 and 14 percent in relation to a buy and hold strategy.

This chapter develops an agent-based model to analyze microscopic and macroscopic links between investor behaviors and price fluctuations in a financial market. This analysis focuses on the effects of Passive Investment Strategy in a financial market. From the extensive analyses, we have found that (1) Passive Investment Strategy is valid in a realistic efficient market, however, it could have bad influences such as instability of market and inadequate asset pricing deviations, and (2) under certain assumptions, Passive Investment Strategy and Active Investment Strategy could coexist in a Financial Market.

This research analyzes the influence of dispersion of valuations on financial markets, taking several aspects of real financial market into consideration (such as financial constraints, investment strategies and so on). As a result of intensive experiments in the market, we made the following findings: (1) Dispersion of fundamentalists' valuations has little effect on the market when financial constraints are absent; (2) When financial constraints — such as short-sale constraints — are introduced, certain situations arise in which deviations from fundamental values become larger, according to the level of the dispersion of valuations; (3) A passive investment strategy, as is consistent with traditional financial theory, is valid even when the introduction of financial constraints causes market prices to deviate significantly from fundamental values. These results contribute to clarifying the mechanism of price fluctuations in financial markets and are notable from both academic and practical view points.

Closed form formulae for the optimal investment strategy are obtained by assuming the completeness of financial markets and the CRRA utility function. In particular, we study the behaviour of the solution when time approaches the terminal date.

The paper models evolution in pecunia—in the realm of finance. Financial markets are explored as evolving biological systems. Diverse investment strategies compete for the market capital invested in long-lived dividend-paying assets. Some strategies survive and some become extinct. The basis of our paper is that dividends are not exogenous but increase with the wealth invested in an asset, as is the case in a production economy. This might create a positive feedback loop in which more investment in some asset leads to higher dividends which in turn lead to higher investments. Nevertheless, we are able to identify a unique evolutionary stable investment strategy. The problem is studied in a framework combining stochastic dynamics and evolutionary game theory. The model proposed employs only objectively observable market data, in contrast with traditional settings relying upon unobservable investors’ characteristics (utilities and beliefs). Our method is analytical and based on mathematical reasoning. A numerical illustration of the main result is provided.

Behavioural finance has shown that investment decisions are the result of not just rational but also emotional brain processes. On the assumption that emotions affect financial markets, it would seem likely that football results might have a measurable effect on financial markets. To test this, this study describes three algorithmic trading systems based exclusively on the results of three top European football teams (Juventus, Bayern München and Paris St Germain) opening long or short positions in the next market season of the futures market of the index of each country (MIB (Milano Italia Borsa), DAX (Deutscher Aktien Index) and CAC (Cotation Assistée en Continu). Depending on the outcome of the last game played a long position was taken after a victory and a short position after a draw or defeat. The results showed that the algorithmic systems were profitable in the case of Juventus and Bayern whereas in the case of PSG, the system was profitable, but in an inverse way. This study shows that investment strategies that take account of sports sentiment could have a profitable outcome.

Mutual fund managers do not have full freedom in choosing investment strategies - they are limited both by the laws and by investment declarations of the funds. Investment strategy cannot be fully changed even in financial crisis but it only can be corrected. This fact could not be characterized as a disadvantage because different types of funds are efficient in different time even during the same economic recession. Mutual fund manager should rationally invest funds of their clients: it is better to keep the maximum possible part of the portfolio in cash and instruments with fixed income on the declining market and it is better to keep shares on the rising market. However the choice of bonds also as the choice of shares should pay respect for the features of these instruments during unfavorable economic conditions. Russian mutual fund management differs from fund management in other countries as in stable economic situation so in the circumstances of financial crisis.
