We have investigated spray coating as a novel processing method for organic solar cell fabrication. In this work, spraying parameters and organic solvent influences have been correlated with cell performance. Using airbrush fabrication, bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices based on a new low band gap donor material: poly[(4,8-bis(1-pentylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene-2,6-diyl-alt-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole-4,7-diyl] with the C60-derivative (6,6)-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as an acceptor, have achieved power conversion efficiencies over 3%. We show that airbrush fabrication can be carried out with simple solvents such as pristine 1,2-dichlorobenzene. Moreover, the influence of device active area has been studied and the 1 cm2device by spray coating maintained an excellent power conversion efficiency of 3.02% on average.

PEDOT:PSS films were ink-jet printed and were integrated into organic solar cell devices. The devices using printed films yield power conversion efficiencies comparable to the devices using spin coated PEDOT:PSS films.

AbstractWe investigate the behavior of a polymer blend (M3EH-PPV:CN-ether-PPV) bulk heterojunction solar cell using a numeric model that self-consistently solves Poisson's equation and the charge continuity equation while incorporating electric field dependent mobilities. We obtain good quantitative agreement with present experimental data for J-V curves and photocurrent action spectra. To reproduce experimental photocurrent action spectra, our model predicts 36% exciton dissociation efficiencies in the bulk of the polymer. We also study the limiting conditions of polymer solar cell development by simulating an ideal solar cell using an AM1.5 global spectrum and assuming all absorbed photons hitting a M3EH-PPV:CN-ether-PPV polymer blend (band gap ∼2.0 eV) based solar cell at normal incidence contribute to current. If such a solar cell has 100 nm length, open circuit voltage=0.6 V and 50% fill factor, then the maximum theoretical power conversion efficiency is ηp=5.6%. A similar analysis for a M3EH-PPV:PCBM bulk heterojunction cell yields, ηp=3.5%. These results further highlight the need to develop smaller band gap materials and help explain why the best polymer based solar cells have power conversion efficiencies that remain stuck at about 3%. Our model is used to investigate the important increase in power conversion efficiencies we can expect as lower band gap polymers become available.

In this paper, we explore the characteristics of bulk heterojunction solar cell based on poly (3-hexyl thiophene) [P3HT] and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester [PCBM] by introducing a buffer layer with device configuration of ITO/ZnO/P3HT:PCBM/Au. Nanostructured ZnO with individual diameter around 20-50 nm was used as the buffer layer and its effects on the short circuit current density, Jsc and open circuit voltage, Voc were investigated. It was found that, the electrical characteristic of the organic solar cell was obviously changed by introducing the buffer layer. Solar cell characteristic with Voc of 0.3939 V was obtained but the Jsc was very small. The surface topology of the P3HT:PCBM was investigated using an atomic force microscopy (AFM). ZnO nanoparticles were observed using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and the electrical properties of the solar cell was measured using a solar simulator with a current – voltage (I-V) measurement system.

We demonstrated an ITO-free, highly transparent organic solar cell with the potential to be integrated into window panes for energy harvesting purposes. A transparent, conductive ZnO/Ag/ZnO multilayer electrode and a Ag:Ca thin film electrode were used in this transparent device as the bottom and top electrode, respectively. To further improve the transmittance of the solar cell, the thickness of the top ZnO layer was investigated by both experiment and simulation. An average visible transmittance of > 60% was reached, with a maximum transmittance of 73% at 556 nm. Both top and bottom illumination of the solar cell generated comparable power conversion efficiencies, which indicates the wide application of this solar cell structure. In addition, we fabricated distributed Bragg reflector mirrors with sputtered SiO2 and TiO2, which efficiently increased the power conversion efficiency over 20% for the solar cells on glass and PET substrates,
