Testosterone therapy in men and women results in decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) and increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL). We sought to determine whether testosterone therapy has this same effect on lipid parameters and adipocyte hormones in female-to-male (FTM) transsexuals. Twelve FTM transsexuals provided a fasting lipid profile including serum total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides prior to and after 1 year of testosterone therapy (testosterone enanthate or cypionate 50–125 mg IM every two weeks). Subjects experienced a significant decrease in mean serum HDL (52±11to40±7 mg/dL)(P<.001). The mean LDL(P=.316), triglyceride(P=.910), and total cholesterol(P=.769)levels remained unchanged. In a subset of subjects, we measured serum leptin levels which were reduced by 25% but did not reach statistical significance(P=.181)while resistin levels remained unchanged. We conclude that testosterone therapy in FTM transsexuals can promote an increased atherogenic lipid profile by lowering HDL and possibly reduce serum leptin levels. However, long-term studies are needed to determine whether decreases in HDL result in adverse cardiovascular outcomes.

Objectives: To evaluate lipid profile parameters in patients with various grades of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) diagnosed on sonography.  Material and Method: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at HBS General Hospital, Islamabad over a period of six months from January 2018 to June 2018. Seventy-nine adults of either gender diagnosed with NAFLD on ultrasonography were consecutively included. Fasting blood sample of all the subjects was analyzed for total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) Comparison of lipid abnormalities between different grades of NAFLD was done by statistical analysis with p-value <0.05 considered statistically significant. Results: Out of the total 79 patients, grade I, II, and III NAFLD was diagnosed in 56.6%, 45.5%, and 3.9% respectively. Total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were raised in 28 (35.4%), 43 (54.4%) and 43 (54.4%) patients respectively. Low serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels were seen in 74 (93.6%) of patients. Statistical analysis showed a significant increase in frequency as well as mean values in all serum lipid profile parameters with the severity of NAFLD grades except total cholesterol (TC). Conclusion: Increasing grades of NAFLD showed a significant correlation with higher levels of cholesterol, LDL, and decreasing levels of HDL, which are all associated with cardiovascular problems.

We evaluated the effect of including 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0% mango waste meal (MWM) variety UBA in corn and soybean meal-based diet son the serum lipid profile of broilers. The experimental design was completely randomized, with five treatments and six replicates with 20 birds per experimental unit. Concentrations of creatinine, albumin, total protein, total cholesterol, triacylglycerols (TAG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), were evaluated at the ages of 14, 28 and 42 days, with 30 birds evaluated per age. At 14 days, there was no difference serum creatinine, total cholesterol, HDL, triacylglycerols, total proteins or VLDL-C concentrations as compared with control. Albumin concentration was the highest at the MWM inclusion levels of 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0%. At 28 days, triacylglycerols, VLDL-C and LDL-C were the lowestat 7.5% inclusion whereas at 42 days, these same variables were the lowest with addition of 10.0% meal. At 14, 28 and 42 days of age, the VLDL-C, LDL-C and total TAG contents were found to decrease at mango waste meal inclusion levels of 5.0 and 7.5% in the diets, which maybe considered an indicator of improvements in the metabolic conditions of broilers.

Background: Acute disturbances of the lipid profile are commonplace during acute sepsis episode. However, their long-term persistence has not to be investigated despite pivotal role of dyslipidemia in several comorbidities excessively noted in sepsis survivors (stroke, cardiomyopathy).Methods: A total of 9,861 individuals hospitalized for a singular episode of sepsis between 2009 and 2019 were identified from electronic medical records. Lab measurements of total cholesterol (Tchol), high-density lipoprotein (HDL-c), low-density lipoprotein (LDL-c), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), triglycerides (TG), lipoprotein(a) [Lp (a)], apolipoprotein B (ApoB), and C-reactive protein (CRP). The data were examined as baseline values before sepsis, during hospitalization, and &lt;3 months, 3–6 months, 6–12 months, 1–2 years, and more than 2 years from initial sepsis.Results: Significant reductions in HDL-c (HDLbaseline = 44.06 vs. HDLsepsis = 28.2; U = −37.79, p &lt; 0.0001, Cohen's d = 0.22) and LDL-c serum levels were observed during and up to three months post sepsis, with females much less affected. In contrast, male subjects had derangement in HDL present for up to two years after a singular septic episode. Total cholesterol levels were slightly yet significantly elevated for up to two years after sepsis. TG were elevated up to one year [TGbaseline = 128.26 vs. TGsepsis = 170.27, t(8255) = −21.33, p &lt; 0.0001, Cohen's d = 0.49] and normalized. Lp(a) was elevated up to two years after initial episode [Lp(a)baseline = 24.6 ± 16.06; Lp(a)sepsis−2year = 8.25 ± 5.17; Lp(a)morethan2years = 61.4 ± 40.1; ANOVA F(2, 24) = 7.39; p = 0.0032]. Response to statin therapy was blunted in sepsis survivors for several years after sepsis resolution. Significant drop-out in prescription of statins and niacin after sepsis was observed. Serum high sensitivity C-reactive protein was elevated for up to five years after sepsis resolution (H [6;1685] = 502.2; p &lt; 0.0001).Discussion: Lipid abnormalities persisted long after the initial septic insult suggesting potential role in accelerating atherosclerosis and other abnormalities. In addition, sepsis seems to blunt statin effectiveness. Additionally, a significant and unexplained drop in statin use was seen in post-septic period.Conclusions: Our study suggests that persistent derangements of lipid profile components for up to two years after sepsis may be associated with altered risk of atherosclerosis-related events among sepsis survivors.

Introduction In the literature ovarian tumors are know to be one of the deadliest gynecological malignancies [1-4]. In US this type of malignancy represents 2.3 % of all cancer-related death and about 4 % of all new cancer cases among women. There are several studies that have reported the role of lipid profiles and it’s role in ovarian tumorigenesis. Fatty acids are essential for cancer cells progression[4-8]. In our study we investigated the true differance in circulating lipid profiles (total cholesterol TC, triglyceride TG, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol HDL, low density lipoprotein cholesterol LDL) among patients with and without ovarian tumors (OT) using a meta-analytical approach. Methods The meta-analysis was conducted using the MOOSE guidelines. PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library were extensively searched (with a period of publication restriction between 2007 and 2019) to indentify published studies using the following keywords: “ total cholesterol ”, “high-density lipoprotein”, “ triglycerides ”, “ low-density lipoprotein ”, “ ovarian cancer”, “ ovarian tumor ”, “ lipid profile ”. The search methodology is shown in Fig. 1 and all references of retrieved articles were searched manually. Results Seven studies, involving 1542 OT cases and 2195 non-cases of OT were included in this meta-analysis and I² statistics ranged between 97 and 99%. Mean circulating TC and HDL were significantly lower among OT cases compared to non-OT cases (P<0.04 and P<0.005). Conclusion There is a modest significant association between circulating HDL and risk of ovarian tumor but it is crucial to elucidate the implications of HDL in tumor manifestations and growth.

Background: Body fat abnormalities and metabolic derangements are well known to occur in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The objective of present study was to evaluate the anthropometric parameters, fasting lipid profile and fasting blood sugar in treatment naïve HIV patients and to assess any relation with CD4 count.Methods: Anthropometric measurements, latest CD4 count were recorded from HIV patients. Blood was collected from patients for lipid profile and sugar measurements.Results: Anthropometric parameters showed a gradual increase in waist circumference (WC), increase in waist hip ratio (WHR) and decrease in body mass index (BMI) as CD4 count declined. Fasting lipid profile showed a gradual decrease in total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and increase in triglycerides (TG) and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C) as CD4 count declined which were statistically highly significant (P<0.001). Compared to higher CD4 group (350-500/ mm3), the lower CD4 group (<50/mm3) showed a decrease in mean total cholesterol by 60 mg/dL, LDL-C by 76 mg/dL and HDL-C by 13 mg/dL. The increase in mean TG and VLDL-C were 154 mg/dL and 30 mg/dL respectively. Comparison of fating blood sugar (FBS) between CD4 groups showed a gradual rise in FBS as CD4 count declined.Conclusions: As CD4 count declines, metabolic alterations occur in treatment-naïve HIV patients with substantial decrease in serum total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C and an increase in TG and VLDL-C and increased incidence of impaired FBS. Morphological alteration in advanced HIV is evidenced by increased WC, WHR and decreased BMI.

In recent times there has been a steady increase in researches aimed at searching for plant agents that can be used in the management of diabetes mellitus and its complications with minimal side effects compared with the anti-diabetic drugs in the pharmaceutical market. This work is on the effect of aqueous extracts ofNauclea latifolia plant on serum lipid profile in streptozotocin- induced diabetic rats. Thirty mature male Wistar albino rats were divided into six treatment groups of five rats each. Group A was normal control and group B was streptozotocin-induced diabetic control. Groups C, D and E were streptozotocin- induced diabetic rats treated daily with 500mg / kg. body weight of aqueous extracts of stem-bark, leaves and root-bark of Nauclea latifolia respectively. Group F was streptozotocin- induced diabetic rats treated daily with 5mg / kg. body weight of glibenclamide and the treatment was for 28 days. The serum total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and triacylglycerol of the rats were determined using assay kits from Agape Diagnostic, Switzerland while very low density lipoprotein cholesterol was determined by calculation according to the method of Burstein and Samaile (1960). The low density lipoprotein cholesterol was estimated using the method of Friedwald, Levy and Fredrickson (1972) which entails differential subtraction of the sum of the cholesterol fractions from the total cholesterol. The parameters were analyzed using One- way Analysis of Variance with the level of significance determined by least significant difference. The streptozotocin-induced diabetic control rats had their serum levels of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein cholesterol and triacylglycerol significantly elevated compared with the normal control. Nauclea latifolia aqueous extracts brought about significant reduction of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and triacylglycerol levels in the diabetic treated rats. The outcome of this work indicates that Nauclea latifolia aqueous extracts have ameliorating effect on diabetic complications due to high serum lipid profile levels.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of nutrition intervention actions on the lipid profile of children and adolescents enrolled in public elementary schools. METHODS: This nine-month, controlled, intervention study included 202 students aged 7 to 14 years attending two schools (intervention/control) located in a poor neighborhood of the municipality of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Actions were implemented in the intervention school to promote healthy eating habits, presented as "Ten steps to healthy eating". The effect of these actions was assessed by subjecting the students at baseline and end of the follow-up to biochemical, maturation, and anthropometric measurements and a produce intake survey. The dependent variables were the changes in the study biochemical parameters: total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and triglycerides. Analysis of covariance assessed the changes that occurred over the study period. RESULTS: The mean total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and triglycerides of the intervention students decreased 13.18 mg/dL (p=0.001), 7.41 mg/dL (p=0.038), and 12.37 mg/dL (p=0.029), respectively, compared with the control students. CONCLUSION: Actions of this nature have a positive impact on lipid profile. This study adds to those that use effective and viable public health strategies implementable at the primary care level.

Abstract Background Exposure to arsenic orchestrates a myriad of noxious health effects, including cancer. Different parts of Irvingia gabonensis are used as herbal remedies in traditional medicine. In this study, the comparative effects of the ethanol leaf (ELEIG) and stem bark extracts (ESEIG) of Irvingia gabonensis on sodium arsenite (SA)-induced lipid profile disturbances in Wistar rats were investigated. Methods Fifty five Wistar rats weighing between 100 g and 179 g were distributed into eleven groups (n=5). Group 1 (control) received feed and water ad libitum. Group 2 received SA at a dose of 4.1 mg/kg body weight (kgbw) for 14 days. Groups 3–11 were treated with the extracts with or without SA. Treatment was done by oral intubation for 14 days. Serum concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triacylglycerol (TAG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-c), total lipids (TL) and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) were used to determine the lipid profile effects of the extracts. Results Exposure to SA caused significant (p ˂ 0.05) increases in all assayed parameters, relative to control. Post-treatment and simultaneous treatment with ELEIG and ESEIG mitigated the effects of SA. In addition, ELEIG alone at various doses produced results comparable with control values. However, ESEIG alone caused significant (p ˂ 0.05) increases in all assayed parameters, relative to control. Conclusion These results show that ELEIG and ESEIG ameliorate SA-induced lipid profile disturbances in Wistar rats. However, long-term administration of ESEIG alone may be discouraged.
