We present a study of the behavior of a ball under the influence of gravity on a platform. A propagating surface wave travels on the surface of the platform while the platform remains motionless. This is a modification of the classical bouncing ball problem and describes the transport of particles by surface waves. Phase and velocity maps cannot be expressed in the explicit form due to implicit formulations, and no formal analytical analyses is possible. Numerical analysis shows that the transition to chaos is produced via a period doubling route which is a common property for classical bouncers. These numerical analysis have been carried out for the conservative and for the viscous cases and also for elastic and for inelastic collisions. The bouncing process can be sensitive to the initial conditions and can be useful for control techniques which can dramatically increase the effectiveness of particle transport in practical applications. Finally, we also consider the mechanical model of a particle sliding on a surface which is also important because it has important physical implications such as the transportation of thin films in biomedical applications, among others.

Motion of particles with air resistance (e.g. horizontal and inclined throwing) plays an important role in many technological processes in agriculture, wood industry and several other fields. Although, the basic equation of motion of this problem is well known, however, the solutions for practical applications are not sufficient. In this article working diagrams were developed for quick estimation of the throwing distance and the terminal velocity. Approximate solution procedures are presented in closed form with acceptable error. The working diagrams provide with arbitrary initial conditions in dimensionless form of general validity.

AbstractIn the present study, using instrumentation data regarding vertical and horizontal displacement of the dam have been analyzed. Also, the largest and most critical section of the Marvak earth dam is modeled with the behavioral model of the Mohr–Coulomb by GeoStudio software. Numerical modeling of the dam has been done considering the actual embankment conditions and to analyze the changes of the immediate settlement during construction and the consolidation settlement just after construction and initial impounding. The outcomes of instrumentation and numerical analysis at the end of Marvak dam construction showed a settlement between 20 and 500 mm. The results show that the settlement will occur during the construction at the upper levels and the end of construction at the middle levels of the dam. By comparing observed and predicted data, multivariate regression and the explanation coefficient criterion (R2) was found to be R2 = 0.9579, which shows a very good correlation between observed and predicted data, and represents a good match for the settlement points and their location with the initial conditions of the design, and the behavior of the dam in terms of the settlement is found to be stable.

AbstractOne of the main problems of practical applications of degressively proportional allocations of goods and burdens is lack of uniqueness of this principle. Even under given boundary conditions of allocation, i.e. determined minimal and maximal amounts of a good that can be assigned in a given allocation, there are usually many feasible solutions. The lack of formal rules of allocation is the reason why the allocation is typically a result of negotiations among its agents. A number of allocations favor some of agents or their groups, therefore other agents cannot accept them. The aim of this paper is to indicate a way of reducing the set of all feasible solutions exclusively to those that are neutral to all agents. As a result of the term of lexicographic preference of allocation agents defined on the basis of the relation theory followed by a numerical analysis of sets of all feasible solutions, it is possible to determine a core of this set in the form of a subset of all feasible solutions that are acceptable by all agents. In addition, this subset can be further divided into smaller subsets with regard to the degree of acceptance of their elements. Theoretical analysis is complemented by case studies, one of which is application of this idea to the allocation of seats in the European Parliament among the member states of the European Union.

This paper studies the dynamics of a self-sustained electromechanical transducer. The stability of fixed points in the linear response is examined. Their local bifurcations are investigated and different types of bifurcation likely to occur are found. Conditions for the occurrence of Hopf bifurcations are derived. Harmonic oscillatory solutions are obtained in both nonresonant and resonant cases. Their stability is analyzed in the resonant case. Various bifurcation diagrams associated to the largest one-dimensional (1-D) numerical Lyapunov exponent are obtained, and it is found that chaos can appear suddenly, through period doubling, period adding, or torus breakdown. The extreme sensitivity of the electromechanical system to both initial conditions and tiny variations of the coupling coefficients is also outlined. The experimental study of̱the electromechanical system is carried out. An appropriate electronic circuit (analog simulator) is proposed for the investigation of the dynamical behavior of the electromechanical system. Correspondences are established between the coefficients of the electromechanical system model and the components of the electronic circuit. Harmonic oscillatory solutions and phase portraits are obtained experimentally. One of the most important contributions of this work is to provide a set of reliable analytical expressions (formulas) describing the electromechanical system behavior. These formulas are of great importance for design engineers as they can be used to predict the states of the electromechanical systems and respectively to avoid their destruction. The reliability of the analytical formulas is demonstrated by the very good agreement with the results obtained by both the numeric and the experimental analysis.

The flammable hydrogen-blended methane–air and natural gas–air mixtures raise specific safety and environmental issues in the industry and transportation; therefore, their explosion characteristics such as the explosion limits, explosion pressures, and rates of pressure rise have significant importance from a safety point of view. At the same time, the laminar burning velocities are the most useful parameters for practical applications and in basic studies for the validation of reaction mechanisms and modeling turbulent combustion. In the present study, an experimental and numerical study of the effect of hydrogen addition on the laminar burning velocity (LBV) of methane–air and natural gas–air mixtures was conducted, using mixtures with equivalence ratios within 0.90 and 1.30 and various hydrogen fractions rH within 0.0 and 0.5. The experiments were performed in a 14 L spherical vessel with central ignition at ambient initial conditions. The LBVs were calculated from p(t) data, determined in accordance with EN 15967, by using only the early stage of flame propagation. The results show that hydrogen addition determines an increase in LBV for all examined binary flammable mixtures. The LBV variation versus the fraction of added hydrogen, rH, follows a linear trend only at moderate hydrogen fractions. The further increase in rH results in a stronger variation in LBV, as shown by both experimental and computed LBVs. Hydrogen addition significantly changes the thermal diffusivity of flammable CH4–air or NG–air mixtures, the rate of heat release, and the concentration of active radical species in the flame front and contribute, thus, to LBV variation.

We present a theoretical model of the temperature distribution in the boundary layer region close to the seabed. Using a perturbation expansion, multiple scales and similarity variables, we show how free-surface waves enhance heat transfer between seawater and a seabed with a solid, horizontal, smooth surface. Maximum heat exchange occurs at a fixed frequency depending on ocean depth, and does not increase monotonically with the length and phase speed of propagating free-surface waves. Close agreement is found between predictions by the analytical model and a finite-difference scheme. It is found that free-surface waves can substantially affect the spatial evolution of temperature in the seabed boundary layer. This suggests a need to extend existing models that neglect the effects of a wave field, especially in view of practical applications in engineering and oceanography.

Undesired vibrations in structures, buildings, and machines lead to reduction in the life of the system and greatly affects the safety of the occupying or operating personnel. In addition, economic and time losses could result from needed repairs or reconstruction. Many control techniques, active and passive, have been devised over the years to reduce/eliminate the vibrations in the aforementioned systems. Passive vibration control techniques are favorable over the active ones due to their simplicity, ease of implementation, cost, and power consumption. In dynamic structures, such as large buildings, passive control techniques are favored over their active counterparts. The most common types of passive control devices are tuned mass and impact dampers. The advocates of each of these devices boasts advantages of the others; however, there have been no systematic studies to compare and quantify the effectiveness of each of these types of devices as well as their suitability for specific applications. In this paper, a comparative study between the tuned mass dampers and impact dampers is conducted. A one-story structure is used to show the effectiveness of each of these devices in absorbing the vibrations of the structure. The coupled systems are modeled and simulated under free vibrations. The time responses are acquired using the same geometric parameters, excitation, and initial conditions. The comparisons are based on the settling time and amplitude decay rates of the primary system using each damper type. The numerical results show that both dampers can produce similar dampening effects if the parameters are optimized; however, correlating the dampers parameters is a challenging problem in the field of vibration and control.
