The work presented in this paper aims to study the performance of a two-lobe hole-entry hybrid journal bearing system compensated by orifice restrictors. The Reynolds equation governing the flow of lubricant in the clearance space between the journal and bearing together with the equation of flow through an orifice restrictor has been solved using FEM and Galerkin's method. The bearing performance characteristics results have been simulated for an orifice compensated nonrecessed two-lobe hole-entry hybrid journal bearing symmetric configuration for the various values of offset factor , restrictor design parameter , and the value of external load . Further, a comparative study of the performance of a two-lobe hole-entry hybrid journal bearing system with a circular hole-entry symmetric hybrid journal bearing system has also been carried out so that a designer has a better flexibility in choosing a suitable bearing configuration. The simulated numerical results indicate that for the two-lobe symmetric hole-entry hybrid journal bearing system with an offset factor greater than one provides 30 to 50 percent larger values of direct stiffness and direct damping coefficients as compared to a circular symmetric hole-entry hybrid journal bearing system.

The hydrostatic and hybrid journal bearings are finding increasing applications due to their excellent characteristics. The non-recessed hydrostatic/hybrid journal bearings have been developed so to provide an improved performance over the recessed/pocketed hydrostatic/hybrid journal bearings. The stability and unsteady behavior of the journal bearings is greatly influenced by bearing geometry, and accordingly various designs have been used by designers to achieve the desired objective. The non-circular journal bearings i.e. the multilobe journal bearing exhibits better stability as well as a superior capability to suppress whirl. In the present paper a theoretical study pertaining to a novel journal bearing configuration i.e. two-lobe hole-entry hybrid journal bearing is being presented. The work presented in this paper aims to study the performance of a two-lobe hole-entry hybrid journal bearing system compensated by a orifice restrictors. The Reynolds equation governing the flow of lubricant in the clearance space between the journal and bearing together with the equation of flow through an orifice restrictor has been solved using FEM and Galerkin’s method. The simulated numerical results for the non-recessed two-lobe symmetric hole-entry hybrid journal bearing system with an offset factor (δ) greater than one indicates a significant improvement of the order of 30 to 50 percent in the values of direct stiffness and direct damping coefficients as compared to a circular symmetric hole entry hybrid journal bearing system. The results presented in the paper are expected to be quite useful to the bearing designers as well as for the academic community.

The dynamic and hydrodynamic properties of the pad in the fluid pivot journal bearing are investigated in this paper. Preload coefficients, recess area, and size gap, which were selected as input parameters to investigate, are important parameters of fluid pivot journal bearing. The pad’s pendulum angle, lubricant oil flow through the gap, and recess pressure which characterizes the squeeze film damper were investigated with different preload coefficients, recess area, and gap sizes. The computational models were established and numerical methods were used to determine the equilibrium position of the shaft-bearing system. Since then, the pendulum angle of the pad, liquid flow, and recess pressure were determined by different eccentricities.

A computer program for calculating dynamic coefficients of journal bearings is necessary in designing fluid film journal bearings and an accuracy of the program is sometimes checked by the relation that the cross terms of linear damping coefficients of journal bearings are equal to each other, namely “Cxy = Cyx”. However, the condition for this relation has not been clear. This paper shows that the relation “Cxy = Cyx” holds in any type of finite width journal bearing when these are calculated under the following condition: (I) The governing Reynolds equation is linear in pressure or regarded as linear in numerical calculations; (II) Film thickness is given by h = c (1 + κcosθ); and (III) Boundary condition is homogeneous such as p=0 or dp/dn=0, where n denotes a normal to the boundary.

The present work aims to analytically study the performance of misaligned four-pocket, membrane compensated, hybrid journal bearing system operating with micropolar lubricant. In the present study, the flow characteristic of the lubricating oil containing additives and contaminants has been modeled using Erigen’s micropolar theory. The journal misalignment which may occur as a result of noncentral loading, improper assembly, shaft deflection due to elasticity and thermal distortions, etc. has been accounted for in the present study by defining a pair of misalignment parameters in vertical and horizontal directions (i.e., δ and σ).The modified Reynolds equation governing the flow of micropolar lubricant in the clearance space of a misaligned bearing has been solved using FEM and Newton Raphson method along with the appropriate boundary conditions. The numerically simulated results suggest that the effect of journal misalignment is to cause degradation in bearing performance, whereas the influence of micropolar effect of lubricant is to enhance the bearing performance. Therefore, it is imperative to account for the effect of misalignment and lubricant behavior during the design process in order to generate accurate bearing characteristics data.

The plain circular journal bearings are not found to be stable by researchers when used in high speed rotating machineries. Hence, extensive research in the study of stability characteristics of non-circular bearings or lobed bearings assumed importance, of late. Present article deals with the stability analysis of non-circular offset bearing by taking selected set of input and output parameters. Modified Reynolds equation for micropolar lubricated rigid journal bearing system is solved using finite element method. Two kinds of input parameters namely, offset factors (0.2, 0.4) and aspect ratios (1.6, 2.0) have been selected for the study. The important output characteristics such as load, critical mass, whirl frequency ratio, and threshold speed are computed and plotted for various set of values of input parameters. The results obtained indicate that micropolar lubricated circular offset bearing is highly stable for higher offset factor and higher aspect ratio.

This article examines the effect of couple stress lubricant on the characteristics of six-pocket hybrid irregular journal bearing system. Various shapes of irregular journals viz. barrel, bell-mouth, and undulated journal are considered in the analysis. To model the behavior of the flow of couple stress lubricant in bearing clearance space, the modified form of Reynolds equation is derived by using Stokes theory. The unknown pressure field in Reynolds equation is determined by using Galerkin's method. To illustrate the effect of couple stress lubricant on bearing system, the results for characteristics parameters of journal bearing system are presented. The results noticeably reveal that the presence of different geometrical irregularities in journal may ominously influence the performance of bearing system. Further, the use of couple stress lubricant instead of Newtonian lubricant offers a significant improvement in the value of bearing characteristic parameters of geometrically irregular hybrid journal bearing system viz. Purpose The aim of the present paper is to study the combined influence of textured surface and micropolar lubricant behaviour on the performance of two-lobe hole-entry hybrid journal bearing system. The bearing performance parameters of the textured circular/two-lobe hole-entry hybrid journal bearing system have been computed against the constant vertical external load supported by the bearing. Design/methodology/approach In this work, Eringen’s micropolar fluid theory has been used to derive the governing Reynolds equation. The consequent solution of the governing Reynolds equation has been obtained by using finite element method (FEM) numerical technique. Findings The present study indicates that the use of the textured surface, two-lobe profile of bearing and micropolar lubricant, significantly enhances the bearing performance as compared to non-textured circular journal bearing. Originality/value The present study concerning the influence of surface texturing on the behaviour of the two-lobe hole-entry hybrid journal bearing lubricated with micropolar lubricant is original. The theoretically simulated results of the present study will be useful to design an efficient journal bearing system.

A new numerical method is proposed for predicting the nonlinearity of tilting-pad guide bearing oilfilm force in the rotor-bearing system in a large hydro-unit. Nonlinear displacement and velocity of the journal center, as well as nonlinear tilting angles and angular velocities of the pads in non-stationary Reynolds equation are taken into account. This method is also suited for other small rotor-bearing system. As an example, the response due to a momentarily created unbalance is Calculated. The nonlinear motion patterns of the pad and journal whirling orbit are obtained. Finally, the nonlinear orbit is compared to the linear one that could be calculated from linear stiffness and damping coefficients. It is shown that there are important differences between those two orbits and that the nonlinear simulation is more accurate.

A comparative study on the performance characteristics of the flexible multirecess hydrostatic journal bearing system with constant flow valve and capillary restrictors has been presented considering the effect of micropolar parameters. The modified Reynolds equation for the flow of micropolar lubricant through the bearing has been solved using finite element method, and the resulting elastic deformation in the bearing shell has been determined iteratively. The results indicate that the micropolar parameters of the lubricant affect the performance of the flexible multirecess hydrostatic journal bearing system quite significantly.

A periodic (displacement) disturbance is imposed on an aerostatic, porous, journal bearing of finite length under steady-state conditions. The dynamic pressure distribution is obtained by a pressure perturbation analysis of Reynolds equation and a modified flow continuity equation in a porous medium. Dynamic stiffness and damping coefficients for different operating conditions are calculated numerically, using a digital computer, and presented in the form of design charts.
