We report on the results of numerical simulations for the linear optical polarizability of single-walled zigzag (9,0) carbon nanotubes with modified ends. The nanotubes of a variable length are fullerene-capped at one end and covalently bonded to a hydrophobic cluster of nine benzene rings at the other end. We investigate electronic and optical properties of such structures within a framework of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We demonstrated that the localized states in this system exhibit nonlinear characteristics of excited states. The nanotubes have a strongly oscillating dependence of their optical polarizability on the energy of incident light. Spectral features of the optical polarizability drop in intensity and shift towards higher energies with a decrease in the length of a nanotube or upon fullerene-uncapping. The length dependence is similar for the nanotubes without benzene rings, capped either at one or both ends. Potential applications are suggested for hydrophobic pollutant control in liquid-purification systems.

Functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (f-SWNTs) have attracted great interest due to their enhancement of SWNT properties leading to an increase in potential applications beyond those of pristine SWNT. In this work, we have investigated the behavior of open-end (9,0) bi-carboxyl sidewall functionalized SWNTs in water using molecular dynamics (MD) technique within GROMACS software package based on the OPLS force fields with modified charges obtained from the first principles calculations. The model tubes including perfect and defective nanotubes covalently functionalized by bi-carboxylic groups on different sidewall surface orientation were fully optimized by B3LYP/6-31G(d,p). The simulations were performed at the constant volume and temperature in a rectangular box with periodic boundary conditions in which each system contains one model tube and ~1680 water molecules. The results form MD simulations showed that functionalization on the central carbon atom in the (C1,C ́1)SW-defective sites strongly affects on the dynamic behavior of CNT in water. Results showed that the hydrophilic behavior of the functionalized SWNT has been improved over the pristine and defective nanotubes.

In this study, composite scaffolds with different multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) content were prepared by freeze-drying. These scaffolds were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), porosity, hydrophilicity, mechanical strength, and degradation. The MWCNTs scaffolds were structurally sound and had porous structures that offered ample space for adherence, proliferation, and differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells, and also supported the transport of nutrients and metabolic waste. CS/Gel/nHAp/0.3%MWCNTs scaffolds provided the best outcomes in terms of scaffold porosity, hydrophilicity, and degradation rate. However, CS/Gel/nHAp/0.6%MWCNTs scaffolds were found to support the optimal growth, homogenous distribution, and biological activity of MC3T3-E1 cells. The excellent properties of CS/Gel/nHAp/0.6%MWCNTs scaffolds for the adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenesis differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells in vitro highlights the potential applications of this scaffold in bone tissue regeneration.

Vertically oriented multiple-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) aligned on a silicon substrate were covalently bonded with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and used as biosensors or electrodes. The modified platform was investigated with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), UV-Vis spectrophotometer and Cyclic Voltammetry (CV). The enzyme catalyzed reaction and the subsequent reduction of the enzymatic products by the platform were carefully investigated. The assay was done by measuring the absorbance of the dye formed from the reaction product of the substrates (phenol) and 4-aminoantipyrine. From the linear response, phenol can be quantitized in the range from 47 ppm to 750 ppm with a detection limit of 19 ppm (based on S/N = 3). The resulting modified aligned MWCNTs still exhibited enzymatic activities after storage of 13 days. The activity of the attached HRP was also demonstrated electrochemically.

Carbon nanotube-natural biopolymer nanovectors have important potential applications in delivery system for drugs and biomolecules. In this work, the use of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) as nanoreservoirs for drug loading and controlled release is demonstrated. We synthesized different carbon nanotube-based drug delivery systems including acid and amide-functionalized MWCNT; chitosan (CS) covalently grafted to functionalized MWCNT and MWCNT-CS nanoparticles (NPs) using an ionotropic gelation method as a sustained-release systems for delivery of Tenofovir (hydrophilic anti-retroviral drug). The prepared NPs as different drug delivery systems were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As it is shown, in vitro drug release studies indicated that the cumulative release rate of Tenofovir from MWCNT–CS NPs shows the best result and it reaches the maximum value (90%) after about 120 h. Moreover, comparing to ungrafted CNTs, MWCNT–CS shows high dispersability and long-term stability in aqueous medium which approves the effective solubilization of MWCNT followed by grafting with CS.

The rapid and precise detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has great significance due to its high toxicity. In this work, the response properties of multiple-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and MWNTs-HAuCl4 to H2S at room temperature were compared. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique was used to characterize MWNTs and MWNTs-HAuCl4 films. It was found that sensors with MWNTs-HAuCl4 exhibited much higher response value. On the other hand, sensors with MWNTs were observed to have faster response time and better recovery properties.

AbstractSingle-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are emerging as an important new class of electronic materials. Both metallic and semiconducting SWNTs have electrical properties that rival or exceed the best metals or semiconductors known. In this article, we review recent transport and scanning probe experiments that investigate the electrical properties of SWNTs.We address the fundamental scattering mechanisms in SWNTs, both in linear response and at high bias.We also discuss the nature and properties of contacts to SWNTs. Finally, we discuss device performance issues and potential applications in electronics and sensing.

The possibility of modifying the surface properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has stimulated increasing interest in their application as components in biosensors. In this sense, it is possible to employ surface modified MWCNTs as support to immobilize biomaterials such as enzymes. In this study the enzyme tyrosinase was immobilized onto functionalized MWCNTs (fMWCNTs) via covalent bonding and activity of immobilized tyrosinase was measured via electrochemical detection of phenol. MWCNTs were first treated with sulphuric acid and nitric acid with ratio 1 : 3 at 70ºC to introduce carboxylated groups (-COOH). The carboxyl moieties were then activated by treatment with a cross-linker, 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) to enable tyrosinase immobilization via amide bonding. FTIR spectra of tyrosinase immobilized fMWCNTs showed the presence of peaks attributing to aliphatic C-N (1382 cm-1) and amide carbonyl (1639 cm-1) vibrations which confirmed successful covalent immobilization of tyrosinase onto fMWCNTs. Electrochemical measurements using tyrosinase-fMWCNTS-CPE revealed increasing limiting current values of reduction peak with increasing phenol concentrations at -200mV. The appearance of the reduction current indicates that the immobilization process retained the biological activity of the covalently bonded tyrosinase on fMWCNTs surface. This study has demonstrated the potential of using MWCNTs as support for enzyme immobilization and their application in biosensor technology.
