Dispersion of degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) efficiency near the exciton resonance of aggregates of 1,1′-diethy1-2-2′-cyanine (pseudoisocyanine, PIC) chloride is reported. Correlation with the spectrum of imaginary parts of nonlinearity obtained by pump and probe techniques is discussed. Third order nonlinear susceptibility of PIC aggregates has been calculated supposing highest density packing attainable by Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The nonlinear figure-of-merit of aggregates was evaluated, which is intensity dependent due to exciton annihilation. Observed intensity and wavelength dependence of mixing efficiency is qualitatively explained in terms of absorption saturation, exciton annihilation, and subsequent generation of an excess diagonal disorder by vibrational energy accumulated in aggregates.

Vibrational relaxation dynamics of trans-stilbene in the S1 state immediately after photoexcitation is studied by picosecond time-resolved anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy with several pump and probe wavelengths. Pump-wavelength dependence of the anti- Stokes spectrum indicates that, when pump photons with high excess energy (≈5200cm-1) are used, the anti-Stokes Raman bands at 0 ps delay time arise from vibrationally excited transients with excess vibrational energy not thermally distributed in the molecule. Probe-wavelength dependence suggests that the vibrationally excited transients at 0 ps are mostly on the lowest excited vibrational levels, as far as the olefinic C═C stretching and the C–Ph stretching modes are concerned. The vibrational relaxation process of S1trans-stilbene is discussed on the basis of the observed results.

The nonlinear optical properties of pseudoisocyanine J-aggregates in Langmuir-Blodgett films have been investigated by means of degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) process. The conversion efficiency of the DFWM signal and the estimated third order susceptibility were found to be comparable with those of pseudoisocyanine J-aggregates in solution under comparable resonance conditions. The intensity dependence of the converted (DFWM) signal is interpreted as resulting from different processes including saturation, exciton-exciton annihilation and secondary processes of dynamical disorder.

Nearly spherical Au nanoparticles of about 3.83 nm diameter were embedded into the ( Ba , Sr ) TiO 3 matrix using alternating sputtering method, showing the characteristic surface plasmon resonance absorption band at 571 nm. Dispersion in the third-order optical nonlinearity was investigated at several wavelengths from 450 to 680 nm around the resonance peak by a single beam Z-scan technique with a wavelength tunable picosecond laser system. The real and imaginary parts of third-order nonlinear susceptibility were resolved and the relative contributions are quantitatively compared at each wavelength. The maximum absolute value of third-order susceptibility as large as 4.312 × 10-8 esu was obtained at the surface plasmon frequency. The temporal response was also characterized by the femtosecond time-resolved optical Kerr gate measurement and the nonlinear response time was evaluated to be 192 fs at the laser wavelength of 800 nm.

We report on a study of the absorption spectra and third-order nonlinear optical properties of crystalline PdO thin films, grown by oxidation of thin palladium films deposited on a substrate. The spectra reveal an absorption peak at [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]nm, which grows and narrows significantly as the temperature is lowered to [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]K. This behavior suggests an exciton nature of the peak. According to the position of the long wavelength absorption edge in the spectra, the bandgap of the material is [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]eV. Utilizing the techniques of degenerate four-wave mixing and Z-scan, using a pulsed laser radiation with a wavelength [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]nm and a pulse duration of [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]ns, we determined the real part of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility of Re[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]esu. Possible nature of this high refractive nonlinearity is discussed.
