Researchers trained in pharmacology and physiology must possess not only a comprehensive knowledge of chemistry and the nature of compounds but also a deep understanding of physiology and predict how these compounds function in a system or organism. However, graduate programs in pharmacology and physiology have increasingly begun to focus on more reductionist approaches to basic science, neglecting training in integrative/systems physiology. In response to a decline in the competency of recent pharmacology and physiology graduates, a biennial meeting, National Directors of Graduate Studies (NDOGS) in pharmacology and physiology, was conceived to address these concerns and improve the quality of graduate education. NDOGS functions as a forum for directors of pharmacology and physiology programs to exchange ideas and tackle the challenges facing graduate education. The 2015 meeting was held on the campus of the University of Cincinnati, and each day of the meeting was allocated for discussion of a broad topic. On Friday, talks were aimed at “enhancing the professional pipeline.” On Saturday, the theme of “fitting training to emerging needs” tackled ways that universities can respond to the emerging needs of a changing society. Sunday morning updated graduate program directors about changes to National Institutes of Health T32 Training Grant applications and provided a forum for program directors to share their experiences and concerns. Throughout the meeting, presentations and discussions highlighted challenges and opportunities that apply broadly to PhD training in the biomedical sciences and revealed best practices to improve training and career preparation of PhD trainees.

The National Directors of Graduate Studies biennial meeting is a forum for directors from pharmacology and physiology graduate programs to discuss challenges and best practices for programs that are preparing trainees to be successful in the biomedical workforce. The 2017 meeting was held on the campus of Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, NY. Over the course of the 3-day event, several themes evolved, including graduate education training and curricula, diversity and career development, and scientific rigor and communication. Overall, presentations and discussions highlighted the challenges and opportunities for training PhD biomedical scientists and featured best practices from across the country.

What does it mean to have true cultural competence as an speech-language pathologist (SLP)? In some areas of practice it may be enough to develop a perspective that values the expectations and identity of our clients and see them as partners in the therapeutic process. But when clinicians are asked to distinguish a language difference from a language disorder, cultural sensitivity is not enough. Rather, in these cases, cultural competence requires knowledge and skills in gathering data about a student's cultural and linguistic background and analyzing the student's language samples from that perspective. This article describes one American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)-accredited graduate program in speech-language pathology and its approach to putting students on the path to becoming culturally competent SLPs, including challenges faced along the way. At Teachers College, Columbia University (TC) the program infuses knowledge of bilingualism and multiculturalism throughout the curriculum and offers bilingual students the opportunity to receive New York State certification as bilingual clinicians. Graduate students must demonstrate a deep understanding of the grammar of Standard American English and other varieties of English particularly those spoken in and around New York City. Two recent graduates of this graduate program contribute their perspectives on continuing to develop cultural competence while working with diverse students in New York City public schools.

Our understanding of the role of mitochondria in biomedical sciences has expanded considerably over the past decade. In addition to their well-known metabolic roles, mitochondrial are also central to signalling for various processes through the generation of signals such as ROS and metabolites that affect cellular homeostasis, as well as other processes such as cell death and inflammation. Thus, mitochondrial function and dysfunction are central to the health and fate of the cell. Consequently, there is considerable interest in better understanding and assessing the many roles of mitochondria. Furthermore, there is also a growing realization that mitochondrial are a promising drug target in a wide range of pathologies. The application of interdisciplinary approaches at the interface between chemistry and biology are opening up new opportunities to understand mitochondrial function and in assessing the role of the organelle in biology. This work and the experience thus gained are leading to the development of new classes of therapies. Here, we overview the progress that has been made to date on exploring the chemical biology of the organelle and then focus on future challenges and opportunities that face this rapidly developing field.

Este artigo analisa os resultados da segunda etapa da pesquisa Escrita criativa na Academia: a formação do escritor, desenvolvida desde 2015 no Programa de Pós-graduação em Letras (PPGL) PUCRS, cujo objetivo geral é verificar a estrutura curricular e as condições de ensino oferecidas pelos cursos de mestrado e doutorado voltados para a formação do escritor e do pesquisador na área de Escrita Criativa na universidade. Nesta etapa, procurou-se verificar qual a percepção dos discentes acerca das disciplinas oferecidas, bem como os procedimentos metodológicos adotados no curso, visando melhor adequação dessas propostas, bem como apontar caminhos para uma implantação ampla da Área da Escrita Criativa no Brasil. *** Alumni methodological and curricular notes for postgraduate courses in Creative Writing in Brazil ***This article analyses the results of the second stage of the research Creative Writing in Academia: the writer’s education, developed since 2015 at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) Graduate Program in Letters. The general objective is to verify the curricular structure and the teaching conditions offered by the Masters and Doctoral courses focusing on the education of writers and researchers in the area of Creative Writing at PUCRS. At this stage, we sought to ascertain the students’ perceptions about the modules and methodological procedures adopted in the course, aiming at a better development of these proposals, as well as to point out ways for a wider implantation of Creative Writing in Brazil.Keywords: Creative Writing; Higher Education; Graduate Studies; PUCRS; Brazil.

This article concludes a two-part review of graduate education in occupational therapy, with the results of a survey of 309 therapists and 68 administrators from the prairie provinces. Three areas were included in the mail questionnaire: graduate program components, potential demand, and factors likely to affect enrolment. Therapists and administrators had remarkably similar response patterns on desirable program components. Therapists expressed a need for graduate level education and administrators indicated a need for therapists with graduate degrees. Therapists indicated a variety of family and financial factors limiting their ability to enroll in graduate study. A small number of administrators indicated that assistance was available.

ABSTRACT Objective: to discuss the different impacts - technological, political, social and economic - of Graduate Program in Nursing at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, problematizing their indicators and their adequacy to the field of Nursing and Health, according to the genesis and nature of Nursing care, the Nursing science and its interfaces with other fields of knowledge. Method: a study conducted in July 2021 based on documentary sources extracted from an institutional form, for evaluating graduates and annual reports of the Program in the period between 2011 and 2020. The documentary data were submitted to descriptive analysis. Results: the technological, political, social and economic impacts and their respective indicators are presented as proposed by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Level Personnel for the evaluation of graduate programs. The evaluation of the impacts of graduate education in Nursing indicated that it represents a challenge to be faced, given the difficulties identifying quantitative and qualitative evidence allowing such verification. Conclusion: important impacts of the Program are evidenced; however, the indicators and respective criteria are questioned regarding the best adequacy and completeness to the field of Nursing and Health, according to the genesis and nature of Nursing care, the Nursing science and interfaces with the other fields of knowledge. Therefore, it is urgent to invest in studies and to propose indicators and criteria to evidence the real impact of the Graduate Programs in Nursing on society.

The aim of this paper is to illustrate innovative interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary implications for marketing for an academically rigorous graduate program that serves the needs of employers in the emerging field of environmental policy. By linking interdisciplinary curriculum design to the transdisciplinary nature of environmental policy work, program design and marketing become interwoven.

Recently, a number of noteworthy results have been achieved in various fields of artificial intelligence, and many aspects of the problem solving process have received significant attention by the scientific community. In this context, the extraction of comprehensive knowledge suitable for problem solving and reasoning, from textual and pictorial problem descriptions, has been less investigated, but recognized as essential for autonomous thinking in Artificial Intelligence. In this work we present a challenge where methods and tools for deep understanding are strongly needed for enabling problem solving: we propose to solve mathematical puzzles by means of computers, starting from text and diagrams describing them, without any human intervention. We are aware that the proposed challenge is hard and of difficult solution nowadays (and in the foreseeable future), but even studying and solving only single parts of the proposed challenge would represent an important step forward for artificial intelligence.
