Full Densification

In the field of advanced ceramics, Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) is known to be very efficient for superfast and full densification of ceramic nanopowders. This property is attributed to the simultaneous application of high density dc pulsed current and load, even though the sintering mechanisms involved remain unclear. In the first part of the paper, the mechanisms involved during SPS of two insulating oxide nanopowders (Al2O3 and Y2O3) are discussed while in the second part illustrations of the potential of SPS will be given for (i) Consolidation of mesoporous or unstable nanomaterials like SBA-15 or biomimetic apatite, respectively; (ii) Densification of core (BT or BST)/shell (SiO2 or Al2O3) nanoparticles with limited or controlled reaction at the interface. (iii) In-situ preparation of surface-tailored Fe–FeAl2O4–Al2O3 nanocomposites, and finally (iv) One-step preparation of multilayer materials like a complete thermal barrier system on single crystal Ni-based superalloy.

In this study, we designed a suitable electrode material was designed, Cu-W alloy, which achieved a good thermal match with CoSb3 thermoelectric (TE) material. By means of spark plasma sintering (SPS), Cu-W alloy was introduced into CoSb3/Ti/Cu-W TE element successfully. Finite element analysis showed that the maximum thermal residual stress appeared at the cylindrical surface zone close to the CoSb3/electrode interface. SEM and EPMA results showed that an intermetallic compound (IMC) layer formed at the CoSb3/Ti interface and EDS analysis confirmed the IMC layer was TiSb phase. Shear tests showed that the shear strength of CoSb3/Ti/Cu70W30 joint was about 50Mpa. The potential profile of the interface area was measured by the four-probe method and the result showed no abrupt change in voltage was found around the interface. The high temperature reliability evaluation showed the joint had high thermal duration stability.

Simultaneous Influence

The preparation of highly dense bulk materials with a grain size in the range of a few to a few hundreds nanometers is currently the objective of numerous studies. In our research we have achieved a measure of success in this regard by using the methods of mechanically-activated, field-activated, pressure-assisted synthesis, MAFAPAS, which has been patented, and mechanically-activated spark plasma sintering, MASPS. Both methods, which consist of the combination of a mechanical activation step followed by a consolidation step under the simultaneous influence of an electric field and mechanical pressure, have led to the formation of dense nanostructured ceramics, intermetallics, and composites, such as, MoSi2 FeAl, NbAl3, and TiN-TiB2. In this report, both one-step synthesis-consolidation and sintering of different nanostructured materials by SPS and FAPAS were investigated. .
