AbstractPartially Sulfonated Poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) samples were prepared by modification of corresponding poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) with concentrated sulfuric acid. Poly(ether sulfone)(PES) was blended into SPEEK to prepare PES/SPEEK blend membranes by solution casting. The glass transition temperature of blend membranes indicated the molecular miscibility between PES and SPEEK. Characteristics of the blend membranes, including water uptake, thermal stability, methanol permeability, swelling degree, proton conductivity, etc, were investigated. PES played an important role in the blend membranes. Though the proton conductivity of PES/SPEEK blend membranes decreased to some extent, their performance for barrier methanol and swelling had remarkably enhanced, showing the feasibility for direct methanol fuel cell.

Polymer electrolyte membranes made of sulfonated poly(ether ether)ketone (SPEEK) and polysulfone (PSf) (2–10 wt %) were prepared by a solution casting method. The characteristic properties of the SPEEK/PSf polymer blend membranes were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the AC impedance method. The SPEEK/PSf blend membranes showed good thermal and mechanical properties and appreciable ionic conductivity. It was revealed that the addition of PSf into the SPEEK matrix could markedly improve the electrochemical properties of the resulting membranes, which can be accomplished by a simple blend method. As a result, the SPEEK/PSf blends appear to be good candidates for the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) and direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) applications. These blend membranes, having various amounts of PSf (2–10 wt %), were investigated in PEMFC and DMFC. The power densities were about 400 and 50 mW/cm2 for PEMFC and DMFC, respectively. This makes PSf-based DMFC and PEMFC suitable for application in portable devices and transportation, respectively.

Sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) with four different sulfonation degrees (SDs) were prepared, and mixed with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to prepare four series of SPEEK/PVDF blend membranes. The miscibility between SPEEK and PVDF was investigated by observing the micro-morphologies. The miscible blend membranes were found in the SPEEK/PVDF blend membranes in which either SPEEK had relatively low SD or consisted of low content of one component (either SPEEK or PVDF). The PVDF crystallinity was found to decrease in the SPEEK/PVDF membranes that had better blend miscibility. With the increase of PVDF content, all the blend membranes exhibited the decreased proton conductivity and methanol permeability, and the miscible blend membranes decreased more slowly than the immiscible ones.
